    I'm used to larger, corded routers th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

    Thanks so much for posting this tutorial, I’m going to follow it step by step today building my own!
    Before I go...I don’t mean this as a criticism but it’ll bother me all day if I don’t say that the way your push block sits so low and leaves your thumb exposed so so close to your blade gave me extreme anxiety. I’d feel horrible if I didn’t mention it and came back to your vids I subscribed to and find you no longer had a thumb 😳There are SO many safe blocks out there these days and your hands are the most important aspect of a woodworker! Thanks again for the great vid! 👍🏽

    One tip I saw on making the sled was to use a wider base so the rails sit on top of the bottom. That permits screwing from the bottom into the side pieces and reduces any likelihood that your screws in your sled which are horizontally installed may cause he bottom the router is riding on to bulge. The screws installed as you did might cause the router to ride on possible bulges at each screw position. If they were installed vertically, the sled bottom remains flat with no potential to bulge.

    Nice job. I'd make one change though - in your build, you attach the sides of the sled with horizontally driven screws into the edges of the sled base... than can cause a minor, but perceptable bulge in the base at each screw's location. Better to make the base 1-1/2" wider and mount the sides by driving the screws through the bottom of the sled, into the edges of the sides.

    Purchased the plan for this Router Sled and will build it this weekend. The plan is very easy to follow and of course I can always refer back to this video if I have a problem. One thing I want to point out in the plan is the dimensions for Part 3 on the cut list should be 2 1/2 " X 48", not 3 1/2" X 48". Thanks for the video and plans.

    • @natenator76
      @natenator76 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I discovered this problem this week as well when I built the router base and found it was sticking off the rails by a good inch. Had to redo parts of it. After watching the video again I realized his build was not like the plans which is pretty annoying to waste time and materials for a plan that the creator didn't even follow in the video. Surely, he could have updated the plans instead of continuing to allow a faulty product to float around for purchase. I had been considering some of his other plans and now am questioning those purchases wondering what I will find out to be wrong with them as well. Be better MWA Woodworks

    Been tossing and turning over whether to build an elaborate aluminum extrusion type mill or follow the route you took. Not wanting to spend the money for Woodpecker's mill I find myself stuck with the most cost efficient and lasting design possible but long story short your design is simplistic and nicely done and probably will end up being the way I decide to go. Nice video with explanations! Liked and subscribed!! Stay safe and happy woodworking!!!

    I don't really know why I clicked on this video considering I already have a router sled that serves my needs.... but I'm glad I did. I had no idea collet extensions were a thing so I've been using flat spacer boards beneath my work pieces that are too thin to be tall enough for the bit to reach.

    I used polyurethane on my sled it provides a slippery surface for the router and slides easily on rails. Also attached my sled sides ontop of the base piece and attached with pocket screws. Less chance of warping with the frame secured to the base board.

    Nice video, and I learned a few new things. One tip I recommend is to level the sled rails using a 4' level before you start routing. You don't have to be level in the long direction but the two rails have to be co-planar in the perpendicular to get a slab that's truly flat. lt's like using winding sticks only much more accurate.

    Thank you for the great tutorial! One question though, what purpose do the inner rails serve? Couldn't you just take them out and have the sled bottom ride the rails? I'd think that would eliminate any problems caused by runout between the inner and outer rail surfaces.

    • @J-D248
      @J-D248 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rails provide rigidity to the sled bottom. Otherwise the whole sled would bend/deflect whenever you put pressure on the router in the middle of it and leave the workpiece looking like a dish.

    Seen it used in several video's but never listed so far is your countersinking bit, quite strange looking so the question is it a universal hole size? I'm old so needless to say quite blind, LOL & just unable to see it truly used in normal speed at least to tell, also thank you for all of these simplistic video's that I'm enjoying immensely, truly a breath of fresh air compared to others always trying to overwork it & sell you everything under God's Green Earth, so thanks again, sincerely, TOM.

  • @bobdylan941
    @bobdylan941 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi man, great project!
    Just one question: I guess you made the rails that way (on the table saw) because you were super confident about the alignment of the fence and the blade right? - actually I guess you have checked that off camera. I ask you this because I'm not that sure my fence is that well aligned and the blade too, I mean it's kinda good but to make perfect long boards I should make a long and tedious alignment job and probably buy an indicator gauge... Because even a mistake of 0.3 degrees in the rails flatness can lead to a height drop of, like, 3-4 mm for a table that is 1 m long after you have planed it down. So I was thinking about superposing multiple MDF boards, which are super flat, on the wide side to make the rails. Or directly buying some pine boards after having checked the size doesn't change over the length of the board. Do you have any better ideas? :D
    BTW of course I will align my table saw perfectly one day haha
    Congrats again!

    Great video and milk!! I’m going to build mine on your concept. It looks like your rails are 3 & 4 inches tall??

      Something like that I can't remember for sure but I made them taller and bought a collet extension that way I could do real thick stuff or thinner stuff

    Great vid and commentating throughout the video. Have you figured a way to limit the ridges the bit makes with each pass? I am using a 1.5" flattening bit, but seem to be getting a LOT of ridges with each pass. I have tried going slower, more passes with little movement when moving the sled along the rails. Thanks.

      The ridges happen because the bit is not exactly parallel to the work surface. It's tipped off axis just by a hair which causes the ridges. The only way to eliminate it is to have your setup perfect. That said, I have never been able to eliminate the ridges, even on my CNC. But they are faint and can easily be removed with sanding.

      @@MWAWoodworks Ok, that explains the issue I am having. I will need to go back and make some adjustments to my sled and try to get it a little closer to perfect to help with the ridges. Thank you for your response.
