Rural Russia looks a lot like rural U.S. There is a lot of poverty in the U.S. as well. In the U.S. you have "trailer parks" that are in worse shape than these people's homes. Before you attack me. I'm not saying it's everywhere like in rural Russia, just that is some places the poverty in rural America meets or exceeds rural Russia. A lot of Americans commenting in this section have themselves never even visited real rural America. Their idea of rural America is a nice small town outside a well to do suburb or a national park, but flyover country and everywhere in between is largely forgotten in the American psyche. There are plenty of American towns in the rust belt and Appalachia that are dilapidated and run down as bad as these homes.
