It took me about 3 hours to follow this 20 minute video. That includes downloading the OMV ISO and burning it to the disk, and formatting the drive. Everything worked. The only departure I made was setting up a user with a login to access the samba share. (I did not leave it open to "guests.")

I had an old HP desktop with room for 2x3.5 inch hard disks. (one for the system drive, and one for data) I5-4690K with 8GB memory. The drives were getting kinda warm, so I had to install an extra fan.
I installed OMV 6 over a year ago, but your videos for OMV 5 helped a lot.

People, just remember to chose timezone properly. If not and you update you will strugle with errors which will lead to error "failed to export" etc. So do it at very first thing. It's even more important than changing your password ;)

You should image your boot drive before attempting this.
Upgrading omv is so tedious I never made the move from omv 4 to 5 :(

Install OMV6 on a new drive (SSD) and then connect your storage drive in. The improvements are vast and awesome.

Awesome video. Going to have to uninstall some of those plugins. Maybe portainer. After i was done installing portainer and opened a new web page i started getting= Screen turns black. red box up top. "Software Failure. Press left mouse button to continue. Obsolete cached data found. Page will be reloaded." Anytime I click a menu item. Started just at the network section of the vid.
Pulled all the plugins. Removed Docker/Portainer. Still errors out on major menu item clicks like diagnostic or network. Might just reinstall it.
You cant use raid (just one disk). What you leave in Raid options? Linear? Stripe? I want to use SnapRaid.
I've installed OMV with 4GB OS disk on Proxmox. Just got an email notice indicating the drive is 90+ % full. I've a blank 3TB WDC passed thru to the same VM. I am sure the passed-thru HDD should not affected the OS drive. Any suggestions?
Do you still have to install Proxmox kernel to get zfs plugin to work? OMV6 seems to have you install the kernel plugin and then install proxmox, but it is a little more confusing than the last version. Trying to get it all squared away. Thanks for all the great videos.

Hi nice tuto thanks, I am stucked at the wetty which does not show up in the plugin list. Should I install something else before? I am on Odroid XU-4 with a debian distrib. Thanks for any help :) (I am a beginner thanks)
The wetty program does run on arm.
(ANYONE HELP). I just loaded OMV 6 using a standard 13th Gen intel based motherboard. I loaded wetty then clicked "Open UI". Once at the command prompt I type in "root". The screen goes blank with "reconnect" popping up. I click reconnect and the cycle starts all over. Everything else seems to be working with my install including creating RAID 5 using 3 test HDs.

Yes and it's excellent! I leave the OS drive as ext4 and all data drives as ZFS.

Jeff, I am at the step to get Docker working but Docker, Settings, Portainer and Yacht do not show up after installing OMV extras It has OMC extras on the left side list but no arrow pointing to the right indicating there are any options under it. It also says"Please install the openmediavault-compose to provide docker functionality within the OMV web interface." I installed it from plugins but the options don't show up under omv-extras like your example shows...

It's not an issue i figured out later. There are no further icons, that's correct in later versions. We have to install WebDav via docker f.e.
omv-extras no longer has Docker and Portainier in it.
Is that why I am not seeing the settings tab under omv-extras 😩🤦♀️
Hey just to let everyone know OMV-extras plugin released an update today making changes to how the DOCKER install process works and removing PORTAINER and YACHT installer options. IK this is one of the few recent videos with OMV6 so I know many people will get confused trying to follow along please see the OMV forums can't paste a link.

Really good stuff and very timely. Many others have covered older versions of Open Media Vault and the system has changed so dramatically that it makes them almost detrimental and definitely confusing. This is episode is fast paced, but very clear -Well done

omv extras doesn't have anything extra.. its just one click and only has "docker repo" with a check mark. did i mess anything up or is this now the new normal? omv ver 6.6.0-1

Your OMV series is the best - especially two videos have been lifesavers. I was running an older OMV (3.x) which crashed. Your other video (how to recover from OMV crash) is the lifesaver. I followed it and that got mine up & running - well kind of. But then I installed 6.x - the latest greatest. That video is created for an older version. The interface is somewhat changed from those earlier versions. So it was getting scary as I didn't want to loose any data due to missteps. That is where this video comes in and explains everything for a fresh installation. So thank you.
Please do some more OMV videos especially how to setup some useful cron jobs for critical backups, some power saving techniques, Plugins that can be useful etc. TIA.
You must install mini DLNA plugin or it won't be a very good media server.
There are other choices besides that. Plex maybe?
But OMV still DOES NOT have a “Save configuration” feature, which makes it not suitable for production.
If you use proxmox, well of course you can save the whole thing.

I have downloaded version 6.0.24, created the installation USB, try if I use an NVME as another USB stick, after checking IPV6, it stays in a blue screen, and does not ask for anything about network configuration..... no does nothing.... any ideas?? I'm using a Gigabyte b150m-d3h ddr3 motherboard, with intel core i5 6500, 12 Gb DDR3 ram...

I would greatly appreciate Jeff would do a detailed video for the plugin "autoshutdown" and "wake alert". Finding help configuring them, would be great! Furthermore the plugin "reset file permission" does appear to be severe buggy, so i had to delete it for retrieving proper functions (applying file permissions does not work anymore while having it installed)!
I want to upgrade from OMV4 to 6. I have to do a clean install, and while I have my data backed up to an external drive. Do I have to format the current drives that are hooked up to my OMV4 system, or will OMV6 recognize the drives and data in the current OMV4 system? My backups are at my parents, so I don't want to go to their place to dig it up and transfer it all to the new OMV6 system. It would be nice if OMV6 will just reconize the current file system of the OMV4 drives that contain my data. I don't have any fancy raid or anything, I just have individual drives. Thank you.

Followed this helpful tutorial but portainer did not launch from the UI.
Solution I found online to fix this is follows.
run the following in wetty
apt install apparmor apparmor-utils auditd
restart docker
then reinstalling portainer. I removed data and portainer.
Then i reinstalled from OMV extras and was then able to access the web UI.

When I run the install command for OMV-extras, there is no drop down settings, portainer, docker, etc... like there is in yours. I used both shift-ctrl-R and rebooted the machine and still not luck. Any ideas?
Great until the very end. Once I set Guest permissions to read/write I cannot write any files/folders to the OMV server. Had this problem but not this bad with v 4.X. A total failure for now.
Can you do a tutorial to recover the configurations of "docker" containers such as Radarr or Plex for example from an old version of OMV. Thank you

I hope you can help I want to setup OMV 6 on a Raspberry Pi there is no problem with that what I do have a problem with is I want to add a hard drive but NOT format it because it has all my files on it do not want to copy files over to another drive to long and to big to do is there a way to add the drive or should I just forget OMV and use Raspberry Pi OS and share with Samba

I've just thought that I have to upgrade my OMV again, but then found out I have OMV 6 already for a while. Upgrading OMV on SBC usually means reinstalling everything which can be tedious. Glad to see OMV guides again! BTW I found that docker compose is the simplest way to transfer docker containers to new OMV install, maybe small guide on switching to docker compose could be helpful

Total noob here and struggling. Wetty and portainer ui always goes to omv6 login page. (Wetty was installed in via putty) is it port settings somewhere?
i would like to know how to access this after install and no matter what search parameters i type in all results are how to install the damn thing ive already wasted three days on this thing reinstalling it twice because it crashed after install. for a program that is supposed to be sooo good it sucks if you ask me is it ip address plus :some number ?????

Doesn't work at all, fresh installation from the stable iso and omv-extra does not even look like this in the menu.
so i use linux and setup a nfs share but it said "mount point not found" i was sitting there for 5 minutes, and then i choose smb and it works fine now lol

I am struggling to select any devices to set up RAID 5 on Quad SATA hat on a raspberry pi. I have followed the tutorial but when it comes to Software RAID I cannot select any devices. In Software RAID tab "Select the devices that will be used to create the RAID device. Devices connected via USB will not be listed (too unreliable)." None of the 4 HDDs appears when I select it.
Can you set up RAID 5 without creating/mounting drives? Whenever I create a drive, it goes through its process, I get the following message - "You have made changes that have not yet been saved. Do you want to discard them?" Do I want to discard them - "No". There is nothing to ask me to "save" changes. If I press "save" again it runs the same process.
RAID only can be established from SATA/IDE Devices! You can't do a RAID with USB-storage!
I followed all of the steps up until checking to see if I can edit the data folder (Time: 19:00). However, I get a Destination Folder Access Denied message "You need permission to perform this action." Can anyone offer any guidance?
Verify that u have a proper user with access rights granted, otherwise try to reformat the hard disc partition, because i am into some bugs while the File Systems was not formated proberly! Often it helps to reformat the hard disk and everything is fine. Somehow UUID-Problems, i actually guess!

you need a corresponding user in the "Setting User Account" Sections, every user (that should be able to mount the shares) has to be part of user-Group or has to be the owner of the Files itself!
Just switched to a real server and omv6 are still unstable, omv5 works better but not as intended. I will probably go to some thing else. The experiense here are that when you have problems they are hard to solve because you have to rely on a comunity of users. Personally i wouldn´t recomend this software to anyone.
if you are switching from a real server, you should be familar setting up basics. First start with formating a hard drive, matching shared folders and ending up with linking the shares to SMB/NFS.
The OMV Community is somehow pragmatic (the forum is a mess) but often very kind and helpful. The Forum is far away from being lucid, here i fully agree to you!

1-2GB USB for installation is enough. You don't need 8GB. 8GB are recommended as OS disk.
OMV recommends 8gb for install media.

I have done everything like in the Video, and still cannot acces smb drive via windows or by linux. I can acces it via android smartphone thou. I dont get it

you can't login from anywhere, because it is set up for the Local Area Network (LAN). Reaching it from mobile phone can be done through Port Forwarding, but it is not trivial. Mobile Data Provider puts you into another Subnet and this public IP differs from the local IP of your NAS, dramatically!

32Bit are not supported but for the Raspberry Pi (ARM-CPU). The underlying OS is mostly a Debian 64Bit, because 32Bit are no longer supported. Please ask more at the Forum of OMV.
Been following you since OMV 4 and are now on OMV 6 and it´s been so easy to follow your videos. I have a wish for a videoserie. A setup where we can ask question about OMV 6 and then you answer these qustion in a "WEEKLY UPDATE" or similar. My first question would be. My OMV server has a card reader but how to setup that so I can put in my SD card from my cameras and import from that reader. I have managed to setup it once but then keep asking for that specific card.
OMV seems like a great product and your videos on this subject have been invaluable, but I have found Linux {Mint} to have become worse than Windows if that is possible. I have one LM laptop which I've finally got to see and read/write to the OMV server. Then I have another LM laptop which was created using the same thumbdrive ISO as the first one and no way on earth will it Mount the OMV server. It sees it, but complains that it cannot mount the Window's share.
All I needed was a 3rd location to store/share files in a HOME environment and between Linux and OMV they have created a NASA launch control complexity like system rendering it useless for the average user.
What P's me off to no end, is a simple rinky dinky FireStick could easily attach and play videos from the OMV server and took only 2 minutes to set up with a rinky dink remote while 2 laptops took over 5 days and so far only one would connect.
I'll revert to Sneaker Net and a Thumb Drive!

Hi, can you do file access audit logging on OMV 6? I need a NAS that audits user activity of SMB shares read, write, delete, rename and moved files/folders and provides timestamp, IP address, computer name and username in SMB audit log. Reason file access audit logging is needed is because sometimes sensitive data is deleted on SMB share by someone and I need to know who did it. Please share your thoughts on this, thanks.
Have been having so many problems with OMV 6 that I am considering going back to OMV5. Is there any advantage to OMV6? The docker and apps will be latest on either. Why upgrade at all? Just for some visual differences? Especially for people with a little older hardware, is there any advantage?

Suggestion: Redo this installation video on a Proxmox VM using the Proxmox Kernel in the OMV installation and passthrough a PCIe HBA to the VM.
I am doing this right now. Proxmox on bare metal. OMV in a VM. Passthrough HDD (not video, although PCIe would be cool). Snapraid and Mergerfs. I am using information from everywhere and an all-in-one guide would be sweet.
Side note I am an OMV fan because of Techno Dad and obviously a Techno Dad Life fan!!! Thanks for everything you do Dad. My OMV5 on bare metal was created %100 from resources from Techno Dad. The only issue I ran into with OMV5 was I ran out of storage on my main drive making the server unbootable. I suspect I missed something about where to run dockers.
@@caffeinesippingman switch to omv6. It's amazing! I run a 16 channel SAS controller with two 8-channel chips on it. I pass one to omv6 and keep the other one for proxmox!
@@alafrosty I am setting up my new box, to learn and taking notes because I am wiping it and starting over. Proxmox on bare metal, VM OMV6, passthrough each individual drive (probability going to passthrough the sata extender, on the reload) (My SAS card wasn't comparable with my mobo) with mergerfs and snapraid, with an extra drive for dockers. Containers/portainer inside OMV6. I am having issues with the containers seeing the files dl'ed. I image it is a permission issue, been working on it an hour or 2 every once in a while for a few weeks.
@Caffeine Man I did a video on installing proxmox on bare metal a couple of days ago. Will upload in a week or so and will let you know.
One issue I ran into: if you're installing to a USB stick it has to be LARGER than your available system RAM. I have 16GB RAM in my machine and tried to install to a 16GB flash drive, it just couldn't get past the partitioning phase. Ordered some 32GB flash drives today and the install went perfectly, that was the only difference.
Can you do an updated video on using RemoteMount in OMV, you're OMV4 video was rly helpful a few yrs back. I've skipped version5 and finally upgraded to running OMV6 on raspi, though having issues. Remotemount been a great way to backup network shares with rsync.

OMV6 should not be installed onto Ubuntu, it just relies on/requires a non-GUI (no Desktop) Operating System! Therefore Debian Net-Installer is needed!
