Just as Van's talent is, this piece and the entire album that came out in `68 is other-worldly and ungodly innovative! It's the first time those of us who were living then recognized we had a true genius on our hands. Or, at least someone capable of thinking for himself and with nerve enough to change his music drastically from the norm of the day. That alone is rare!
i tell you what this is a great upload..great sound plus van wasnt playin a lot off of astral weks those days mostly because the record company still owned it and did up until the 25th anniversary, thats why he did the forum shows that time, the only song the record company was 'brown eyed girl' smfh...rock on van the (misery) man..lol 😊😊
@@MarkCharal I'm pretty sure it was the Caladonia Soul band around then, I'm guessing it was John Platania but I can't remember. Nobody from the Astral Weeks sessions. That I am certain of.
Thank you so much for hoisting this up for us all to enjoy. Astral Weeks is my favorite album of my favorite singer songwriter. And happy birthday, George Ivan. You're the best.
I don’t like God, but I respect your comment and its intended meaning toward the vastness that is Astral Weeks and its presence. There’s few comparisons that stand up to it.
shoot me to the stupid Moon - if I only have this one with me. I mean, the whole album. (got my original vinyl - still up and running ) Wow - this performance is recorded quite soon after the release... in such a poetic and free style... amazing. And it happened in Boston - not too far from New York, where it was concepted.... after that they went on tour ... to Boston... crammed with Irish folk. Poets of the Sea.
i think his ethic was always: make the best album you can with the people you have, as artists and musicians. He wrote this album, i believe, mostly in cambridge mass, and plays with john payne and his sax choir. i can smell and taste the charles in this album. maybe it's just me. anyway, ain''t it grand??
The expression you are looking for is "what I wouldn't give to be at this concert". A bit (or a lot) like the way Americans say "I could care less" about some topic when in fact they mean the exact opposite, that they could not care less.
It has the distinctive Van Morrison guitar riffing, that's for sure. Platania has a pro range, but Van's leads are more hard-headed like this opening solo.
Is there any old recordings of Astral Weeks full album live left? Please if you have one, or any other live Morrison albums, then please upload them somewhere. He is quite probably one of the only genuine performers of this time who has withstanded the occult forces who we now see to have infiltrated our music over the past few dedades (see Mark Devlin's books for more information on this)
Much as I love Van and lord knows that I do - that is still the worst guitar tone I have ever heard on one of his recordings! The set-up on that instrument is so bad that the string buzz, coming from a neck out of true or strings too low, whatever, is more in my ear than the player's efforts - and I suspect it might have been Van himself!! -We have all seen Van's sometimes furious noodling on whichever guitar he was playing on a night, just prior to stepping up to the vocal mic - but on this occasion whoever is deaf to the effect, insisting instead to proceed and play an horrendous solo! I'm sorry fellow followers of the Van - this was a bust for me.
As much as one may well not bear it, I admit I rather felt the raw power and intention of the solo. Its all-out untightness evoked something groovy to me.
Que beleza! Que ritmo gostoso! Que voz linda! Que jeito único de cantar e encantar! É um convite para dançar! Parabéns! 👏🏻👏🏻👏👏🤗🤩❤️💋
Oh man, oh man, the blood and soul of this man of Irish soil .... this is primordial and a juggernaut of a jam.
Sometimes I stand speechless at how great Van is. And other times, it just makes me chuckle.
I's playing this at my funeral
You might not go to heaven but the congregation will.
A MARVELLOUS PERFORMANCE BY THE VERY GIFTED MUSICIAN, VAN MORRISON.

I have it on good evidence god is a Van Morrison fan.
the free-wheeling Mr.Morrison in another time ,in another place-rave on
I was there. It was the Harvard Square Theater, at the time a one screen movie theatre, later chopped up in to a multiplex and now gone.

Do you know who's playing guitar? It sounds so similar to the playing on the album.

This version auto-played and made me stop what I was doing to listen. That guitar intro! Going to need to find the whole album now.
Great version thank you for the upload, I always seem to Crave this album on a Sunday must be Godlike

THE most Sunday album.
Definitely Grateful Dead like. This album is in my top ten always. It may be my No. 1. That stuff is hard to commit to.
Definitely a Phil Lesh type bass line ...

only 22 ,he was, when he recorded this.
Nice find.
❤️👍
I can hear it.
le grand van Morrison
He was born in August 1945, making him at least 26
He was 26 when he did this concert but more or less 22 when he made the album
Anyone know who is smashing the lead out on this?
Possibly John Platania. He was playing a lot with Van back then.
I don't know for a fact but just based on the style I'm sure it's Van himself. All of his solos sound like that.
It has the distinctive Van Morrison guitar riffing, that's for sure. Platania has a pro range, but Van's leads are more hard-headed like this opening solo.

It's definitely Van

You've got a good ear. Aside from the buzz, how would you compare this recording and instrumentation to that on the official album?
As much as one may well not bear it, I admit I rather felt the raw power and intention of the solo. Its all-out untightness evoked something groovy to me.
Hell it sounds like a banjo sitar!
@@francisslam1457 I love the guitar on this. It's avante garde
The thing is, he plays guitar like he sings. It's like -- there's no difference. I love it!
