I think he “actually” meant it and like many (white) people on a journey, regrets that time. His music is GREAT! What he has done for blues & black musicians is laudable! As a person, though, he is a work in progress!🤷🏽‍♂️. He doesn’t have to be a saint.

    All of these comments show how Eric has touched each and every one of us. The common thread I think would be how Eric is able to reach our emotions. I was 13 when Slowhand came out. The radio stations were just killing Cocaine and Lay Down Sally. I was already a huge blues fan and played a little boogie on the piano. When I heard Mean Old Frisco it was all over for me and I had to have that album Slowhand. The Blues took hold of me and at 56 I've never looked back. Eric the world is so much better with you in it....there's a story about you I've read that when you heard Jimi playing in London you said "I might as well put my guitar away". True or not, I'm so glad you kept on and keep on playing - forever in my heart you are. Signed - big fan in Cleveland OH USA.

    Very interesting film, thanks for uploading it! I've been a huge fan of Eric's since his time in The Yardbirds, and have always loved his playing. Despite his legendary status as a guitarist, he's actually very modest about his extraordinary virtuosity...almost embarrassed by it in a way. I remember seeing him at the Blind Faith concert in Hyde Park where he seemed to deliberately avoid playing in the typical style of a 'guitar hero', which a lot of the audience resented...they wanted more Cream! The thing I love about Eric's playing is the emotion in it, that feeling which so many technically brilliant guitarists often don't have. God bless you Eric, and thank you for the music!

    Some people just cannot get it that not everybody started playing guitar to "Get Chicks". Some are just destined to answer a calling. Also, the amount of time it takes to get proficient, on the instrument, often lends itself to a solitary existence, at least for a period of time.
    My teenage years were like that. School and guitar. Nothing else for four years.
    I've also heard that ego is the driving force behind playing guitar. This isn't always true either. Some people are just born to do it, as if it were predetermined.
    If there is no love for what you are doing, it is noticed, and you won't go far with it. Eric is self-evasive because he loves guitar and keeps his ego in check. He doesn't play because he has to. He plays for the love of the craft.

    A craftsman sees through the lens of craft. Eric and Glyn Johns are talking about recording techniques that aren’t rock(et) science, but that 95% of musicians wouldn’t be able to deliver live - or in a studio - because they can’t play well enough without effects or correction. This film is instructive on what musicianship and humility is. There’s not a single moment of arrogance. It’s a masterclass in raw talent and quiet self-assurance.

    There’s 2 great moments: Clapton alone in his room playing a Robert Johnson song. The other is at 1:22 when Whitehouse pulls up to Clapton’s house looks around, and says “there’s more money in ripping off old blues men…”

    Clapton has been a huge influence on a whole generation of guitarists (including me). He certainly was one of the reasons I started playing guitar. Glad he mentioned his own input - mainly the early bluesmen like Robert Johnson (Crossroads live in 1968 on Cream's Wheels Of Fire album: possibly his best performance ever) - and JJ Cale 26:54 who gave without a doubt a new impulse to his career (Cocaine, After Midnight). A great man's life is often made of many smaller men contributing to it… that said without prejudice to his guitar phrasing, recognizable as from the first few notes and his unique and raunchy voice. An icon.

    I love Eric Claptons music. U have for as long as I can remember. I first became aware of him with the Slowhand album. From there I backtracked all of his music. I then realized that the music I heard at the age of 8-9 years old coming from the basement of a church as a local rock band practiced was old Cream. Fell even more in love with Eric's music. I was hearing it and loved it but didn't know who it was. Still when I hear a Cream song I go back to those days in Brooklyn as a child. This interview was great! My respect for Eric grows every time I see or hear an interview with him. I Still Do is one of his best. Imho.

      Don't listen too closely, do you? Listen to the section from 36.15 onwards. Paul Whitehouse (the interviewer) says "well, I think its time for you two gentlemen to go back to the [old folks'] Home..." To which Clapton reacts, comically, "Is the van [from the old folks' Home] here?" Then he and Paul Whitehouse start an impromptu comedy skit - Clapton (obviously pretending to be a decrepit old man, says "I've had a nice day sitting in the sun...can you wheel me (referring to his pretend wheelchair) nearer the sun...?" Whitehouse then imitates Clapton as an old folks' home inmate, "I've got a new album out..." Then Whitehouse pretends to be the driver of the van "...[disbelievingly] - "course you have, Mr Clapton..." Is it that you simply don't understand irreverent British humour? Everyone in the UK would have picked up that "comedy" section of the video.
      And if you were expecting Paul Whitehouse to be more reverential and "respectful" to Clapton, as an American interviewer undoubtedly would have been, you obviously don't know that Whitehouse is a highly successful individual in his own right (as a professional TV comedian and actor), not an interviewer by trade. As such, he is less inclined to be "overawed" by who Clapton is. In any case, he is a close personal friend of Clapton's. Of course he's going to jest with him...

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SteveGouldinSpain Gosh thanks. I would imagine Albert had a host of influences including delta blues artists like Bukka White and Robert Johnson, maybe Muddy Waters out of Chicago. Albert was heavy handed, a big man with large hands and fingers which contributed to his unique tone. Stevie Ray Vaughn, a skinny white ass of a boy, attempted to emulate this with 12 / 13 strings, overwound Texas specials and two in line TS8s. He also used two amps on stage to boost this further. This really pissed Albert off and he accused SRV of stealing his licks. How did I do Steve?

    • @SteveGouldinSpain
      @SteveGouldinSpain 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Spartanm333 not bad actually! BTW I saw Albert live in London and you're right about his hands. Matter of fact everything about him was big. Standing in front and watching him gave me the sense of having a dumper truck driving towards me!! :-)
