Tastebud Time-Travel: 1987 MRE Dehydrated Beef Patty 🍔 Vintage US Military Meal Ready to Eat Review

  • Join me on a culinary journey back to 1987 as we explore the iconic Menu #3, Dehydrated Beef Patty, in this vintage US Military Meal Ready to Eat (MRE) review. Known for being a favorite among troops, this particular field ration has stood the test of time. The patty was perfectly preserved, but the revolting trench food cheese is a different story. I'd happily devour another one of these, regardless of being more than 30 years old.

lol 1989-1994 USMC, the brownie is called the butt plug brownie! I bounced one off the interior of a A frame quonset hut in 29 palms as hard as I could and it landed in another Marines Lap he ate the brownie and it didn’t look like it took damage in it wrapper! There was also a pork Pattie, and frankfurters… first gen of bag MRE would bet they had a C- Rat version also. Oatmeal bar later was the best! Or the cakes were good. Brownie’s sucked and FD fruit was awesome! That MRE you had was stored very well! Blast from the past!

i was a soldier when these mres were in service. as gross as this is, this was one of the few good meals. the dehydrated strawberries were the best thing in any of them. they were lightweight, but c rats tasted better.

I served in the U.S. Army (Infantry from 1987 to 1995. This was one of my favorite MREs from back then. We cooked the beef patty in a canteen cup with water and the beef stock powder to make a sort of au jus. There were no FRHs back then (They came out around 1991) so everybody carried a privately purchased Esbit stove. Perfect combination, and I still use it and the canteen cup to this day when I go camping. The mess kit NEVER went to the field. It was useless.

This one made me tear up a little. Back in 86, my best friend had joined the Army via ROTC in his junior-leading into senior summer of high school. He brought me back a few MRE's from his basic and I fell in love with them. My absolute favorite part of the MRE was the cheese spread. It had just such an odd texture and flavor that it struck something within me. When I saw it come out of the package, I thought, "Yay, it's still good. This should be great!" *SIGH* I was very sad that it didn't survive the years. It looked soooo good. Ah, well. Time gets us all.

I remember this meal well. Stationed at Ft. Ord, Monterrey CA with the 7th ID (Light). We were allowed to have our own campstoves. Crumble the beef patty with some ramen and water, cook it up and squeeze the cheese on top with hot sauce. It was delicious to 20 yr old me!

doesn't sound like the flavor changed that much from the original, only a few MRE's of the era worse in my opinion. These are the reason Tabasco bottles started coming standard, you needed some stuff on it to choke it down, even hungry.

I first had the dehydrated beef brick MRE in 1984 -- which was pre-Tabasco and very pre-heater-sleeve. It was absolutely the menu you DIDN'T want to get. I used to say it was a river fording tool: you toss it into a river, where it would absorb all the water without getting any less dry or more edible, then you could cross the river bed on dry ground. Allegedly, when we para-dropped MREs to Kurds in southern Turkiye, in the early 1990's, they were using the beef brick to shine their shoes. If all you have is ice cold water, with no way to heat anything, soggy cold beef brick and cold broth is about as unappetizing as it gets. You did nail one thing -- it wasn't very "ready" to eat, especially in field conditions -- definitely the worst of the first 24 menus for readiness. Glad you liked it, but I tried to feed one to my sister's doggy, and Dusty wouldn't even let it get in her mouth ... one sniff and she would rather eat grass. And that was with a fresh beef brick, not a 35 year old one, like you ate. Still, you brought back memories. Not great memories, but all memories of young military adventures are good reminiscing fodder. 😉

Interesting.. I was '86-'89 and didn't hate the beef patty as much as you. Always sought out the dehydrated pork patties, but the beef wasn't too bad. I did have a terrible, distinct memory when you mentioned the cold brick and broth though. Chicken ala king was the absolute worst... Sadly, I missed the tabasco and ration heater era as well... I remember putting the entree pouch inside my shirt when I slept so it wouldn't be ice cold and truly foul in the morning.

That's funny because in the 90s after hiking up in the Adirondacks with my german shepherd I tried to give him a plain McDonald's cheeseburger and he wouldn't eat it. He just gave me the wtf is this look lol

Ok, you need to also cover dehydrated pork patties , early 80's. Tasted like a pork rind. They had to stop them because we ate them without dehydrating. Bad for your innards. Since it was dehydrated, it would suck all the liquids in your stomach. Bad for you.

I was in the Army National guard at the time those brown bag MRE's were issued. I couldn't count how many I ate ( A Lot ) but I have never seen a Tabasco bottle like that either, I always got the slim necked bottle. They weren't bad per say, it's what they did to you that was rather nasty. As I recall it, those accessory packets smelled like that when new. I'm surprised you didn't get the dehydrated fruit bar, they were pretty good.

I was in the British Army in the late eighties...we would trade our rations with everyone we met , including the Americans. At first we had the MCIs and then the first MREs turned up... I liked this menu , the freeze dried meat was different, but kinda tasty ... the freeze dried fruit in other rations were really good. Nice review, thanks for the memories...

Did a combined arms exercise in the late '80's in the Army, at Fort Ord, California. It was called ABC, and we trained with Australian, British, and Canadian forces. We tried really hard to drink each other under the table, and were absolutely shitfaced in Marina, Seaside and Monterey. There were some memorable vomiting episodes at PT in the mornings, including a magnificent luminous stream of Mountain Dew onto the MP's Company grass as we ran by....

Better than Turkey Tetrazzini, but that ain't sayin' much. I preferred the sausage patties, but dry, not rehydrated. They were more like snack food then. Most of the early ones were gnarly. Having tasted the modern era ones, the kids are spoiled! heh heh heh

I always enjoyed this meal. The trick here was to put the soup mix into the water you reconstituted the beef with, but go a bit light on the water so it soaks up all the flavor but still has a bit of crunch.

Never was able to reconstitute the dehydrated patties.. The dehydrated gravy was ok even dry and sprinked on the cheese and crackers. Try the dehydrated pork patty, that one had dehydrated ketchup that was pretty good dry too.

My first MRE! Took me right back to 1987! I forgot about the caramels in there! We always rehydrated the beef patty with the beef bullion. We even had a few of these along with the dehydrated pork patties early in Desert Shield. But the older MREs were exhausted pretty quickly. As tankers, we heated our MREs on the exhaust grill of our M1A1s. Thanks for the fun review! Love seeing the old rations!
