Varady and Popp were the great Elvira and Zerlina of my lifetime, and Margaret Price was one of the three great Annas, the others being Carol Vaness and Edda Moser. Stafford Dean made a career of singing Leporello virtually everywhere in the 1960s and 1970s, often looking more dashing and romantic than Giovanni! Winkler and Fissore hold up their ends honorably. That ultra-clean, somewhat anonymous orchestral sound betokens the baton of Mæstro Sawallisch, and the whole number is very vividly portrayed as the comedy of errors and bewilderment that it is. Price especially is glorious here, with her young, girlish timbre and impeccable fioritura; the gruppetti at 'Sol la morte' are as clear and clean as if they had been played on a keyboard. I agree with much of what you have written. Glorious singing. The flaws here are Sawallisch's conducting, and for me Price's heavily aspirated coloratura.
When Christopher Hogwood came to St Louis to conduct Don Giovanni, he used to wear a T-shirt that showed a drawing of a desolate lunar landscape, littered with craters and totally devoid of vegetation, water or animal life. Beneath this depressing picture were the words: LIFE WITHOUT MOZART.

DG is the perfect opera. One of the very few where the quality of the arias matches the quality of the ensembles… and it’s all perfect.
