Another nice trip Jaun, thank you for taking us all along. That ferry used to be a prop driven vessel and required a captain and crew 3 shifts a day to operate, since at that time she was a ship. In a cost cutting measure by the BC govt. they turned a number of these ferrys into cable operated vessels since now it requires only an operator to man the vessel. Three cables if I'm not mistaken, two on the outside to guide, the middle one drives. Lots of trips on that old girl, and because I was hauling fuel I was always placed on the back of the vessel. If an emergency arose like a fire, it would be easier to jettison me off the stern in order to save the passengers and cars. Fortunately never had to use that option. LOL
Hi, that was me in the silver Honda next to you on the ferry! I remember hearing you ask the man directing the traffic to let everyone else go first. This was my first time on the Needles ferry but I knew there was a big hill and tight corners coming up. Thanks for letting us go first.
Thank you Juan, I haven't been that way since the mid/late 90's. Revelstoke Dam was under construction, till just completed. Best wishes from Northern Manitoba.
Thanks for thr journey again Juan. Yes a very steep clim whn leaving and as you said way better for the snaller traffic to go and then evey one can relax. We have Similar Ferrys here in Aus in the Country crossings where one reason or the other they never built a Bridge. We just use the two Cables here and the one on the down side as they call it has a much Larger pully in the middle wjicj they have the Cable rapped around twice there as to give it its own power through and direct drive gear box. Great Country you live in and veri diversified as well loved the Journey as well and thanks for the ride. Aussie Bob.
At the very end of your video at 36 mins, you crossed the Inonoaklin Ck and then the video ended. But had it continued for another 10 mins, you would have seen the turnoff to your left down the shortcut to Westbridge and Rock Creek via the Christian Valley. Not really a shortcut for everyone but one if 1. You are not in a hurry but love BC backroads and 2. Driving a 4x4 pickup, not a big truck 😁!
@@JuanRempel Speaking of Rock Creek, we used to live across hwy 3 from Fort Greenwood and unfortunately, very few had the common courtesy to stop at the crosswalk there to let us and our dogs cross. Except for the Sutco chip trucks....they always stopped!
I live in Edgewood BC 15 klm from there .plus my friend Val works on the ferry.. your location is fauquier. Other side will take you to Edgewood BC or Vernon. On the monoshee ( lovely drive . ) p.s. 15 minutes either way ferry ride and it's free.
When I was a toddler, before they built the bridge, Nelson had a cable ferry like this to get to the north shore. I watched them build the bridge on the way over on the ferry.
Fauguier-pronounced foe key eh as far as I know from travelling there, used to be a motor vessel, now a cable ferry. Apparently crew now paid like truck drivers instead of sea going marine captains etc. I don't know how much lake level changes here about midway on Arrow Lakes but it does change almost 100 feet at the southern end, might explain the long cable way upon leaving the ferry. Its water storage, millions of acre feet for all the dams to the Pacific ocean. The Kootenay River joins the Columbia at Castlegar south of here.
I have been up that grade many times if your pulling a heavy loads sometimes it seems like you need a calender for how long it takes lol but it's just part of the job I live in fintry another lovely rd to navigate
BC governments over the past decades issued intentions to build a much needed bridge here. The last venture into it was 2005 but… the cost of steel was the deal breaker. Now in today’s times the provincial government of the day plans to spend $37,000,000.00 to implement an “electric” ferry on the Crawford Bay Kooteny Lake system. This Needles ferry is so antiquated in such modern times it’s pitiful.
Great video. Just got back from 2 week bike trip through there. I'm pretty sure we passed you at the brake check heading east to the ferry. Beautiful country.
You confused me, you first crossed Needlws to Faquier , left the ferry . You then all of a sudden were going up the hill from Needlws heading to Vernon. I still enjoyed the ride.
You are incorrect. There are no cuts in the video, I started on the Faquier side, crossed the ferry to Needles, and continued our way up to Vernon. You may want to watch that one again.
A few years ago I stopped at the top of the hill late at night to grab a few hours. Later in the night I listened to a fully loaded logging truck making its way up the hill. Took a good half hour, maybe longer. As it approached the summit it's many lights lite up the sky for what seemed a long time. Steepest hill other than Eisenhower which in it's self with tractor in winter is a lifetime experience. Going into Ft. St. John from the south with 29 tonnes of sand is always a good time. Enjoy the drive all!!!
Agreed. The name has French origin. As can be seen, and as I remember from about 20 years ago, the ferry is a "captive" ferry, running between shore-to-shore cables on both (port and starboard) beams. This system - with either cables or chains - is often used fro short-run ferries, especially across lakes of very slow-moving rivers.

Yea, I guess healing fuel that's on of those what it's you plan for. It's certainly a fun route.

Awesome, yea, no need for me to hold up traffic climbing that hill.
That Kenworth needs a real 18spd manual 👍

You're very welcome, when you say Northern Manitoba you mean in the north part of the lower half?
Howdy from BC, but II think you missed a decade or so. Revelstoke Dam was started in the late 70's and completed by 1983.
Thanks man that was fun🤗🏋️♀️👍🤺☦️
You bet
That was a great video thankyou 😊

I'd love to run Australian roads some day, just for the experience.

Loved the ferry ride.
Something special about a ferry ride

Love our free ferrys, just check Drive BC first, the staff are striking, to much forsed overtime.
Very nice scenic drive today with fall colours.
Yes it was!

Oh awesome, I guess we forget a lot of these bridges were originally ferry crossings.
See you tomorrow night 🌙 Juan 👋
Good evening Juan
Cool, I will be doing that drive next summer.
Such a beautiful loop to ride

Would be very posable, the timing would be right to have crossed paths.
@@JuanRempel Anyway, enjoy your videos. Retired after 42 years.
i took that ferry back in 2019 on my way to Nakup
If you head that way check drive bc first, they have been going on strike.

hello from winnipeg, manitoba,by the way do you know Frank and Kathy Powell Rempel?
You know there's thousands of Rempels in Manitoba, I know 1 of them.
dude the road to bella coola has like 15 to 18% grades it's paved with tears and gears I don't think it's ever seen a smile since it was built
You're right, forgot that grade, that one was crazy

Good morning!
Brrrrr, 3⁰c in Castlegar
@@JuanRempel Yep winter is a coming, 37 degrees in a couple of months will feel like a cake walk, lovey weather to sling iron.
I think the ferry landing is pronounced "Folk Yeh" ('Yeh' like rhymes with 'Hey').
