No Engine? Pay Attention | Ep. 206

  • While enjoying the idyllic anchorage of Ten Bay, Eleuthera, per usual I took a gander at the GRIB files and spotted what looked like an excellent weather window to sail to the Berry Islands in a few days time. Forty eight hours later that window collapses on me utterly. What's worse is a forecast for light and variable winds preceding fresh northwesterlies, and there are few nearby anchorages offering any shelter. Situations such as these can put the engineless sailor in quite a pickle.

For all sailors young and old Kevin has repeatedly has shown in most or not all of his vedios that a consistent 360-degree scan of the horizon is a lesson that all of us sailors should have adopted long time ago!
    Fair Winds Kevin!

Knowledge. Knowledge of the language written in the clouds, knowledge of what wind direction, swell direction and period portend. Of course, a good barometer helps greatly.
These skills have been mostly extinguished by the reliance on electrickery.

Nicely done Kevin. That said, I sure love my Volvo Wind when I absolutely, positively have to get there over night. :-) Are you using iridium to pick up the gribs, or are you close enough to get cell phone coverage?

A Cape George 36 won the single handed round the world race that features only technology that is 1968 or earlier. 233 days at sea. Female skipper enjoys single handing in the Southern Ocean so desired a heavy boat - 45% ballast to displacement. Replaced the wooden mast with new aluminum 2 steps up the strength scale, same with the standing rigging. Friends daughter is going to U. of Chicago medical school - I am scared for her - brutally competitive academics, scary urban environment, cold windy winters but ranked #10 of the top universities in the world. Enjoy the Bahamas.

Hey in regards to your thoughts on Starlink , Do It asap. I've had mine 5 months now and swear by it. Pricing will be coming down for current customers by years end BUT right now is the time to buy the V.2 Hardware while on sale. And the ROAM package is best to start with to save money.
I have some tricks/tips to use that plan while on water ,, which is a kinda no-no with Starlink. But totally doable. I'd have to privately email you that info.
Well keep on sailing on ...

It would be nice to see an overall chart of the Bahamas to help us locate your general position and perhaps a overall plan of your intended cruise plan? Do u need people contact from time to time? I would like to travel alone like you especially in those warm climes as I am quite content with my own company! I think I would need some goal, writing, blogging like this, snorkling, playing music, photography, fishing etc., etc.. perhaps a video of what your average daily activity would be interesting? Anyway, it is a real distraction from the usual daily grind of life or non life watching you on your adventure. SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland. This is a bit like having a pen-pal in the good oul days! Fair sailing.

Admittedly I am sometimes remiss on the zoom out views. I guess with people contact we have to distinguish between real and virtual these days. I get much more of the latter, although it is still not the same as real human company, for sure.

Hey I notice you don't have a vang and your main sheet is all the way aft on the boom, but have very good control over mainsail twist, is this accomplished with peak halyard tension on a rig like this?

    • @howtosailoceans1423
      @howtosailoceans1423  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Generally the weight of the boom takes care of the twist. On gaffers you want the gaff light and the boom heavy.

Thanks for having us aboard once again, Kevin. I thought it poignant, the juxtaposition between the comment of enjoying most sunsets from an idyllic anchorage and the reality of life; that you must play chess with nature. It forced me to wonder which of the two man is most hungry for.

  • @roadboat9216

OK Kevin. So nice to have all this info to use. Having to decide which wind model to use. Oh my. beats listening over and over to a scratchy SSB report that was painted with a foot wide brush. This is what I love about the E Caribbean. Very consistent winds eastern quadrant period. Anchor on the west side of anything and you are OK for months. (Barring tropical systems). Bahamas are beautiful but enough challage even with an engine. You do amazingly well.

Hi Kevin. I have loved you’re true sailing videos and with more true old sailing vocabulary as you advance. You are the real deal. Lately I have been getting a little worried. You are doing some of the same loops as before, and I feel that your motivation is decreasing together with your humor. This is totally understandable for any one that likes new challenges. I still love your videos, but maybe someone needs to be the devils advocate. Please keep on sailing.
