You can setup the sound output to send the click only to the headphones output. If you want it to be synced with and external device, you can use the MIDI interface to sync up the midi clock of the two devices.
Yes, this is correct. Only the effects can be link to the click, not the samples. The SPD-SX doesn't have a true sequencer inside, so once you hit the pad, it will play. You could add silence into the sample itself, but you're timing on the pads still has to be spot on. You could use an external sequencer of some sort (like the SPD-30) and trigger samples from an external device, but if you're not going to hit the pads, you might as well go for a SP-404SX.
Just thought I'd drop back and clarify, I checked with Roland (and more to the point went out and bought an SPD-SX). You definitely CAN adjust the tempo of a sample. This is done thru tempo matching. It means you can sample a beat, song etc then play it back at a different tempo. This is useful if.- A: you want to match samples from different songs to the same tempo. B: If you want to play back a long sample (ie a song) but at a different tempo, specifically in my case to practice against. Dave
Yes, you can configure pads, external triggers and foot switches to perform functions like 'start click' and 'tap tempo'. When you do however, these pads can no longer trigger samples. The SPD-SX also has a 'tempo match' function, which should match your samples to your tempo, but I'm not sure if it locks samples to the tempo to make them change along with the tempo as you change it...
Only a very limited amount of sounds are onboard when you buy it. The included samples are there to give you a rough idea of what the device can do. You will want to put your own sounds onto it. To get you started, I once found a SPD-20 sound pack for the SPD-SX that was available from Roland a while back. This pack includes famous sounds from the SPD-20, which may get you started.
For every song in your setlist, you create a different 'Patch', or 'Kit', and set the tempo in the kit-menu to match the tempo of the song. You can create set-lists or 'kit-chains' to match your setlist for every gig or band you might play in. Easy!
By the way, you can however create stereo samples completely planned to the left or right and get two separate mono samples that are split into 2 channels (L & R).
Make sure that the audio input is set to route the sound to the master output instead of just the phones output for example. The sampling function listens to the master output so to say. That should fix your problem!
I'm not from Germany, but from The Netherlands, so I understand why you made that assumption! :D Having this device under your control requires some training, as it is hardly comparable with anything else. Combine this with regular drumming and you've got yourself a real challenge sometimes! But as always; practice makes perfect! Thanks for the comment! btw
Hi The downloaded manual for the SPD SX says that you can "synchronize the tempo of the wave with the tempo of the performance, and play back the wave in synchronization with the performance (p. 43)." The way I read it you can tell the SPD what tempo the sample is, then set the tempo that you are playing at (for the kit). In this way you could for example have two wav files of recorded originally at different tempos but then sync them with the tempo you want to play Am I misunderstanding ?
No, some sounds are included as a demo on the SPD-SX, but you really should put your own samples into the SPD-SX. The SDp-SX is blank canvas that can be filled up with your wildest dreams, whereas the SPD-30 comes with around 700 instruments included. The SPD-SX is a sample player, the SPD-30 is a percussion instrument.
On your SPD-SX go to 'Menu' -> 'System' -> 'Click' -> Tabpage 'Output' and select 'Sub out'. This will direct your click to both your headphones and the Sub Output!
Oh, this will be a bit hard to do. You could set up a different kit in the SPD-SX with a different tempo setting and put the two kits in a kit chain. I'd suggest switching using a DP-2, FS-5U or FS-6 footswitch to control the kits, but I'm not sure this will work very well... The SPD-SX does not have any sequencing capabilities, just a simple click. You might wanna try this option, but if you're switching kits the SPD-SX takes some time to load in the new samples which could be a problem.
Hi! Very good video! Thanx! Actually you give answers whitch even the people at the Roland-Hotline couldn´t give? But I have another question: Is it really possible to route any sound to any output? Can I e.g. route one pad to sub out and another one to the master out? The best would be if i could route Wave A to Master Out left and Wave B on the same pad to Master Out right. This would mean I could route 4 tracks of playback to 4 different channels to the FOH. Is that possible?
Hey, I just found this video.. can you please tell me what the SPD SX clamp is clamped to.. before the cymbal stand. Or should i say...after the cymbal stand, it's clamped to something else before the pad
Hi! Very great video...thank you very much!!! very helpfull...I was wondering if it is possible to record a phrase and then to loop this phrase instantaneaously , as does actually the octopad 30 for example...I know that this was possible on the SPD S using the "phrase mode"....do you know about such a function on the spd sx? Thank you...
It's actually pretty simple; If you want to create patterns, sequences, songs or a small drum kit and want a lot of international percussion, both tuned and standard, go for the SPD-30. If you want to use samples, backing tracks and be creative with effects and loops, go for the SPD-SX... Does this help you out?
Hey, sorry for the late response, but I checked: You can not route a sample to the Master and not to the Sub Out and vice versa. So the answer to your question would be no. You can route the Click, the Audio Input and the FX2 control separately, but not the samples themselves, at least, not that I know of... Sorry about that... :(
Awesome! Very good video! But I have a few questions: If my songs have change of tempo, How to make spd-sx change in the right time? I would have to load the click track from my PC to the spd-sx, and then turn off the metronome of the spd-sx? Is it possible to turn off the spd-sx metronome and my loaded audio samples keep the original tempo that I recorded in pro tools for example?
Tempo match is a bit of a faff to use, but it's really powerful. Basically, all you have to do is 1) turn "tempo sync" on for the actual sound (in Kit Pad "main" settings screen) and 2) set tempo match for the kit. This is done via the Kit "quick" menu -- once you select the Tempo Match function, you'll need to select the pad with the "tempo controlling" sound -- you then tell the SPD-SX what the length + time signature of the loop is (for example, 4 measures of 4/4 time). It'll then set the kit tempo correctly, based on that loop. From that point on, when you change the tempo of the internal metronome, the pads that you turned "tempo sync" on will stay in time.
Hi thank you for your this clip. I wonder if you could help me. My problem with Roland spd sx is when I change kit using the +- function, the last pad I play in first kit will continue playing of I change the kit and hit another pad. Can you help?
you mentioned you used three triggers with the SPD-SX. I'm trying to do something similar: assign a bass drum trigger to pad 8 and a PDX12 snare (two triggers) to pad 7. I can get one or the other to work, even though the midi trigger lights work for all three signals. When I asked Roland for help, they said I could not do what I want...only one or the other triggers can be used. This sounds screwy to me....your thoughts, please? I'm assuming you can get all three of your triggers to work simultaneously....right?
Hi Great video just wondering can you adjust the playback speed of a backing track played thru the spd as a sample? If you can then this would be really usefull when learning new tracks. Or just for adjusting things lile bass loops to the desired speed. Thanks Dave
Hi. Is it possible to make a clicktrak for the SPD-SX. What I mean is that we have songs that starts in 4/4 then there might be a part that goes on for a while in 7/8 then back to 4/4. Or can the click in SPD-SX only playback 4/4...
Great video man. Just the kinda cool stuff which this is best for but isn't immediately obvious! Getting mine tomorrow and cannot wait!! One question - If I had a click track which is tempo mapped (a song which changes tempo a few times and a click to reflect this), would the spd be able to follow this in it's click function? Or would I have to put the tempo mapped click onto a pad and then trigger it? All the best!
Great video, I'm having a simple but bizarre problem. Im in basic samplling, I'm using a microphone, I can hear my voice through the system however L R recording overload indicators show no signal. What could be doing this, I can't manually sample anything (both with mic or ipod) Help Please! Is there something that isn't set correctly in the system? Thanks
Very good video & informative, however I'm not really a tech "Guru". The device is awesome & I'll be keeping it. I find it hard to remember what all is going on with the SPD SX on top of whats happening with the show. That combined with a few brew, equals aggravation. Wenn ich fragen darf, woher kommen Sie?
Can you please detail the mounting system that you used to hold the Roland? It looked like two Tama multiclamps, but what is the third piece that actually attaches to the Roland unit? Is that a specialty piece of hardware from Roland?
If you pan samples to the left or to the right you could look at the outputs as 4 separate mono-outputs, but the Main out and Sub out are still linked, so this is not ideal.
You can not play back MP3's from the SPS-SX, you will need to convert them into 16-bit .wav of .aiff files. This can be done easily and free with a program like Audacity. This is because MP3 need to be decoded first, which takes time and you want the sound to play instantly when you hit a pad. All the 9 pads can have their own sounds so you can play other pads/sounds while 1 pad is playing a backing track. This can be played once as a shot or phrase or can be set to loop.
I can't seem to get samples I pull offline to show up on my flash drive I have plugged into mine. I adjusted them to the right bit rate and everything but they still dont show.
Hello. I have some problem with a this device: When I hit the pad, it no play the sound, but switch on the next kit. How back the settings? Or it device is broken? I just bought it week ago... (
How is this done as this is my main issue I'm having with the SPD-SX. We are doing several bands (we are a cover band) that use keyboards and synths and all of the songs are not in 120 bpm.
This is a great video! Thank you, superior to anything boss has produced. One question. We have just got on as a band, and I am concerned that there is no quantize feature. This has been noted on forums. So once a pad is hit it is not possible for it to sync with the metronome, is this correct?
Hi- Very informative video.I have a question - Which mount you have used to fix the pad,I mean I am trying to fix it in a drum rack itself,Is it possible - From your video its looks like you haven't used the normal stand available in market for SPD-SX. Right? Can you send me the link of the you using?
Nice video, thanks for uploading! I have a question: I want to use the 4 additional trigger inputs and bought cables (stereo to 2x mono) to split the signal. For some reason, the signal is a lot quieter when I use the adapter cable. It's almost twice as loud when I go in directly from my KD-7 into the unit, but since I'd like to use all 4 inputs, I need to split the signal. Any experience with that problem? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Have you set the SPD-SX to actually use the trigger inputs as 2x single-zone instead of 1x dual-zone inputs? This might cause the problem. Otherwise, I would boost the sensitivity in the SPD-SX pad settings.
First, you need to set the original pad to be a "phrase" or "loop" type, which means that it will start/stop its own playback on subsequent hits. Second, you can bind two pads together so that they each control the same functionality. This is done using the "Pad Link" functionality under the Kit Settings page. That means that both pads could be used to start/stop the sound.
The SPD-SX can only do 1/1. It doesn't do measurements like 'TAK-tok-tok-tok'. It just does 'TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK'. I really think this is a great thing. So as long as the tempo in your song is the same you'll be fine! If your songs have different tempo's you might want to consider making .wav clicktrack file and only route it to your headphones for example.
Hi, I hope you can help me. I cannot use SPD SX as a USB MIDI device in Ableton. My Mac doesn't recognize it when I plug the cable (I'm already in AUDIO/MIDI mode and the USB cable is ok). Have you experience with that? Thanks in advance
Have you installed the drivers Roland supplies on their website? You should be able to use it as a audio/midi device. Also, make sure to set the SPD-SX in Audio/Midi-mode, instead of Wave Manager-mode!
Thanks, I've just solved. You need to download the USB driver (mine is here for mac: www.roland.com/global/support/by_product/spd-sx/updates_drivers/1a94d0ef-8672-41c7-b0d5-88b062be4454/) or Ableton doesn't recognize midi and audio device.
Actually, you can change the tempo and have the loops stay in tempo -- this is done with the "tempo match" function. You can combine this with tap tempo to make sure that your loops stay in tempo, even if your band's tempo fluctuates slightly. It's really handy!
Sadly, no. It is one of the key aspects that differentiates the SPD-SX from the SPD-30. So if you want a sequencer, get the SPD-30, or maybe even an Alesis PerformancePad Pro. Of course you can control the SPD-SX with an external sequencer via MIDI.
Is it possible to sync samples to launch with the metronome? Similar to sample launching in Ableton, where you can quantize the sample to launch on downbeats.
Sadly no, the SPD-SX doesn't have a built-in sequencer, unlike the SPD-30. You could create sequenced/quantized samples externally like on your computer and store them in the SPD-SX and play them like regular samples though.
No, and to my opinion this is why the SPD-30 isn't such a great live audio tool. Headphones and Main Outputs on the SPD-30 always produce the same sounds. They off course have seperate volume controls, but that's it. I really think they should implement these features into the SPD-30, but if it's a hardware thing, we will have to wait for the SPD-40...
As the new SPD SX SE version is coming with an Ableton Live Lite license I created a few tuts on how to use them in conjunction - guess thats some good expanding of the SPD SX stand alone mode infos provided in this tutorial here? Have a look th-cam.com/video/z4PzyKBeH4c/w-d-xo.html
No, the SPD-SX doesn't support hi-hat controllers like the SPD-30 does and the SPD-S did. Which is kinda sad actually, because the SPD-SX also doesn't have velocity sensitive AB switching like the SPD-S did.
there are some really dissapointing things about spd-sx, which seem almost obvious and easy to do, but the folks at Roland didn't. First, if you assign click start to a pad, you can no longer put a sample into this pad, neither the main sample and sub-sample. Also pad-link function doesn't work with the pad click start is assigned to. So what's the use? What's the difference? The only reason I wanted to assign click start to a pad was to start click and playback in sync but NO! Not this time. Second, which is not that big deal, but you cannot edit launch mode for sub sample. If you set ALT mode for main sample, no matter, the second hit will stop only main sample while the sub-sample will start again any time you hit the pad. Also it would be nice to be able to assign main and sub for different outputs, but there's no option. And the biggest one is limited disc space with no upgrade option. For click/playback syncronization I have to upload a separate song-long wav file of metronome, but that means each song requires twice as much space.
Superb tutorial!!! You really nailed all the little details on this thing. All killer no filler. you rock!
thanks for your help, really refreshing to see someone do this and I wish you well with your music.
In the system set-up check the PAD CONTROL funcions. Here you can set up pads to perform tasks like kit increments, of click on of etc...
Make sure you're the audio input is set to route to the master out. When the SPD-SX is sampling, it listens to the 'Master Out'!
By the way, you can however create stereo samples completely planned to the left or right and get two separate mono samples that are split into 2 channels (L & R).
Thanks for that really nice presentation :)

Tottally agree.

When you pressed start click, I'm sure I heard accents on beat 1! I didn't think this was possible on the SPD-SX, did I just imagine it?
+iamcharliecooper Just put it in 1/1 mode instead of 4/4 mode!
How do I do that?? In the Menu - System - Click settings?

does this have an internal sequencer for programming your own patterns?
What do you connect to through the sub out so the band members can also hear what you hear?

hanging prob solb?
is that possible to link hi-hat pad and hi-hat controller? does it work together?
Have you set the SPD-SX to actually use the trigger inputs as 2x single-zone instead of 1x dual-zone inputs? This might cause the problem. Otherwise, I would boost the sensitivity in the SPD-SX pad settings.
How do you stop one pad from playing by hitting another pad? Is there a setting for that?
If your songs have different tempo's you might want to consider making .wav clicktrack file and only route it to your headphones for example.
hey. tell please where did u take samples? (Russia is watching u 2.))
does the spd 30 have similar metronome capabilities, such as routing click only to headphones?
i have a question : is it come with internal kits that i can play without simple things?
Yes, but only has a few kits to choose from.
Thanks.
Thanks for the video. I have one question though : how do you route the click to sub out and phones out only?
Best, mikas
hey friends please help me ... why i should buy spd-sx instead of octapad
Hey, where do you live? Would you like to make some mmoney setting up my unit?
Hi There, can you change the tempo of a sampler while playing it?
+Danny Nguyen Yeah, you can, but it's not very handy...
Actually, you can change the tempo and have the loops stay in tempo -- this is done with the "tempo match" function. You can combine this with tap tempo to make sure that your loops stay in tempo, even if your band's tempo fluctuates slightly. It's really handy!
is better than octapad spd 30?
how many minutes can you sampling in a file? I can load or take a 5 minute sampling or more?
+Jorge Ribot Yes you can!
+Jorge Ribot Sure can, the only limit as far as I know is the 2gb internal memory.
Thanks!!
You're very welcome!
There's no quantization, unfortunately.
Sadly no, the SPD-SX doesn't have a built-in sequencer, unlike the SPD-30. You could create sequenced/quantized samples externally like on your computer and store them in the SPD-SX and play them like regular samples though.
good vid
Thanks!
Hello brother i want kd 7 base pedal but I don't have money plz help me bro I like drums playing plz plz
And not a single drum was hit that day
+John Knox Nope! Shame huh? ;)
Wanna hear what it sounds like? Listen to any sound ever.
No, and to my opinion this is why the SPD-30 isn't such a great live audio tool. Headphones and Main Outputs on the SPD-30 always produce the same sounds. They off course have seperate volume controls, but that's it. I really think they should implement these features into the SPD-30, but if it's a hardware thing, we will have to wait for the SPD-40...
once you sample a clip can you change the tempo of it easily?
Yup, you can use tempo match and tempo sync to keep the clip in time with the internal metronome -- I post the instructions above.
you could possibly just set one of your sample to be a custom click track
You're very welcome! :)
Paiste Alpha's though.
top comment firshir.
Laat dat ding dan ook horen.
No, the SPD-SX doesn't support hi-hat controllers like the SPD-30 does and the SPD-S did. Which is kinda sad actually, because the SPD-SX also doesn't have velocity sensitive AB switching like the SPD-S did.
Hell yeah! :D
there are some really dissapointing things about spd-sx, which seem almost obvious and easy to do, but the folks at Roland didn't.
I live in Rotterdam, The Netherlands nowadays. I might be able to help you set it up remotely, it's not hard!
# 303! good discussion
It has tap tempo, and it does accept Midi clock signals as a slave!
☺
Gotta sell my kidneys to get one of those :S
PAISTE!!!!!!!!
