Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Rebuilding The Basement (Welding I-Beams!)

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ก.ย. 2024
- My 1917 mansion's basement needs a complete rebuild. In an attempt to make the basement safer, stronger, and livable, over the past several months we have been rebuilding virtually everything and today we are working on one of the final steps, which is to weld together the I-beams that are supporting the house. After today, we will be able to remove all the center support posts in the basement which will turn the basement from 5 rooms, to 3!
If you really enjoy this video, no need to worry, there is an incredible amount of mansion to be built! There will be many more videos to come!

You needed to have a good certified welder do that job. I do not think it is strong as it needs to be and would not pass inspection. Should have had your brother weld it all. That worries me.
Roman needs his own CAM
And a Cole CAM
his own channel....we love that guy!
@TheBonnieberry yes that guy is A.i lol ..
Hey Roman you might want to make some L brackets to weld into the U brackets and the I beam to re-enforce the U brackets attaching welds on the I beam. Weld the L bracket to the I Beam and the U Bracket. this is a save bet and could be over kill BUT its better to be save then sorry later down the line.
If you don’t trust your welds, you shouldn’t be welding…
Absolutely. I know Cole wants everything open, but if the support structure in the basement fails, there’re 3 floors above it that’ll have cracked drywall & bowed floors at the very least. I’d much rather have posts in the basement than a compromised foundation. Idk, maybe he did get approval from a structural engineer & we don’t know it.
They said toward the beginning they were going to weld extra pieces up there.
I feel like trusting a weld to hold all of that weight doesnt seem strong enough?
The problem is that all the walking above over years is going to weaken that weld over time. I bet an engineer would require that to be bolted together.
Looks like a gusset plate connecting the 2 beams would help
U
@@jackt6595 I just wonder who told him to do it like that..
Such good suggestions.
Sorry Roman, that's a 'sheet' metal break! You need a 50ton press break to bend that thickness of material.
I think with Cooper’s info lets us know what is happening on the farm. It will be nice to see harvesting of the crops
I would have made the beam flanges were they could be bolted to the flange and I Beam
A Grinder and Paint makes me the Welder I ain’t. 😂
Been there buddy; no one’s welds look pretty in the beginning. It’s practice & experience that makes you good & pretty. Keep it up though, it’s a valuable life skill to have; especially on a farm.
Anyways, greetings from Manchester, NH.
No offence Roman but Copper should do the welding he has experienced and schooling your doing the best you can but the structure welding Cooper should be doing it.😮
Thanks for your comment my volume is okay, maybe some balls 🎱 need to drop.
Was an engineer involved in this support design?
Really scary stuff!
It's weird that people think they can alter anyone's format.
Cole has arguably one of the most popular farming channels on TH-cam with 623 THOUSAND subscribers 844 videos over a quarter BILLION views (and made a butt load of money) and yet people think he should take their advice and change how he is making videos.
My guess is that they are just frustrated, wanna be TH-camrs with nothing original to offer.
@@firstname6826thank you for saying that! They need to go to the beginning to see what the channel is about.
Add a couple of gussets to each side of those u-brackets in case Romans welds aren’t perfect, if nothing it will add additional strength and support to the brackets and I beams. Nice work you’re crushing it.
COLE: you need to PAY ATTENTION to folks saying this is NOT a strong enough weld!! They seem to know what they are talking about!!!
So much for having the professional welder weld the beams. The guy must have told Cole he'll charge $20 to weld everything up and Cole said we'll watch a TH-cam video and passed on the offer.
The Cooper video is a reminder to viewers that the primary job is preparing for the harvest and it breaks the video from the house build. Cole is more seasoned and experienced as a videographer and he is a natural speaker. Cooper is an exceptionally multi talented farmer, mechanic and innovator who can figure anything associated with the operation of the farm. Different skill set from Cole, but no less talented.
I absolutely love Roman but PLEASE get a professional to handle those structural welds.
But they watched a youtube video!
Cole I love your videos but Hun please take out at least one ear plug you scream so loud I have to turn the volume down every time you start talking.
Especially the intros...... they hurt EVERYTIME
Have those welds redone by a professional, nothing against Roman, but those welds hold the weight of your house,,, might be good enough for now but not good enough for a few years, better safe than sorry
Grind that weld out and get a real welder in there to weld that up. That’s unsatisfactory period. Sorry if I’m hurting your feelings but that’s structural and has to be correct.
Why are you yelling?
Did your volume button break 😂
It's Cole
@@stevewayne3676 Mine is almost worn out. I lower it when he yells but have to raise it when others talk so i can hear them. volume up, volume down, volume up, volume down. Love the channel but he does scream way too much
Coal has always yelled. I have always wondered if he needs a hearing exam.
Cole, I love your unflagging enthusiasm!
I definitely want to see the engineer's report on that basement! 😆💀
Why would you have a novice welder welding structural items on anything? I'm sure Roman is very talented but that doesn't change the fact that he is still a novice.
Kamala Harris says she's a leader but hasn't lead anything. Look how many cult members she's got convinced
Love your video openings…never stop your enthusiasm!
Huge mistake, trying to do the welds on your own. It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to fail. You can get away with a lot in construction, this is not one of them. Please pay to have a structural welder to come and do it correctly.
I like all the videos and can't wait until the corn stops growing so I can see it get harvested. That's why they are fixing up the trucks. Cooper said that the corn doesn't have to wait for us to get it done and that we, meaning the family doesn't have to wait for the corn and all will be ready when the time comes to get the corn and soy beans. Sounds smart to me. 🤔
only four welds? TO SUPPORT YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE? even by a pro are not safe. SERIOUSLY. Other's are chiming in also. Double up and reinforce those brackets PLEASE. And why not attach the two wood beams together also. You over engineered other stuff ...but this looks janky ...just saying
hey Cole that plumber checked out your plumbing job and gave some really good advice on what you should do before moving forward
I wonder if thats the reason Cole responded to the video? LOL
@@warrenmichael918 did not see that one yet =P
@@kenny4813 The plumbing video of Richard watching Cole do the plumbing, that video is the one Cole responded to it. He watched the video and responded to it.
I don’t understand the I beams running with the joists instead of across them?
didnt you watch the video? You can clearly see that the beams are being used to hold up the big LVL and that is what is holding up all the joists.
@@warrenmichael918 this was before I watched it. He had never said what those were for. I get it now.
@@believer5917 ok. He has talked about those a few times and why he ran them that direction.
It was in the last video, it's complete ignorance. That beam is doing the job of one support pole that Cole's head couldn't allow so they're supporting the laminated beam from above. With these crappy welds... "good job".
Those beams do nothing. What will slowly happen is the subfloor fasteners above the beams will get pulled out of the floor joists. Really bad design.
Yahoo! It's Cole!
Why didn't Cooper weld the items with the welder?
They were working on the beams in the basement instead??
Opening up the basement below where the stairs are made the basement so much bigger. Nice work guys. With Aloha...
Man, I hope Cole reads all the welding concerns!
Thanks for the progress report, its all coming together in the basement.Tell Cooper and DC its also appreciated on the farm info and updates. See you in the next one👍
Why r u screaming bro?
That's his schtick.
@@skeena59 Yeah.......I am about done with it!
I actually love watching this build, but the screaming is hard to take, I am guessing maybe he is hard of hearing possibly? Cole seems like a super nice guy, no disrespect intended, but I have missed a few videos because of all the screaming, and every once in a while I check in on the progress and just turn the volume waaaay down.
COLE I'm not gonna lie I only watched 20% of the farm related videos BUT this Mansion renovation ive watched 100% ive not missed a single episode!!!!! Thats a fact
SAME!
I like the mixture of family events.
10/10, have had flash burn to the eyes before. So uncomfortable. Could not open them for hours and took a few days to recover. Like having fine blasting sand dumped in your eyeholes.
Good work man! Love following along!
Why didn’t Zack or Cooper do the welding? BTW Cole, you have got to be one of the few farm boys out there that hasn’t learned how to weld!
How about Nick, the pro welder who did the first welds until his welder broke?
Hell if you watch long enough there's a lot of things Cole hasn't learned how to do. When there was nothing else to clean up on the farm he had no idea what to do... so he gutted his house.
@@ILGuy2012 bro nicks welds looked like shit. all this shit will hold, but I wish cole had a real pro come in, would have taken a real pro like 3 hours tops at 150-250 an hour, 750$ max and its a never remember event
COLE THE CORNSTAR...and friend Roman.
8th!!! Yay
HEY COLLEEEE!!!!! Much love from ohio
Love your videos. Your honestly one of my favorite TH-cam people. Keep them coming.
Nice work Cooper and Zach and Dad Good job Cole and Roman
Did you ever get the venting for the plumbing figured out??
Where is your welding hood??? It can spark in the sides of your glasses
25:28 yea, I don't know about the "no voids" comment. LOL
Cole! You have the highest energy level in TH-cam! I suck up all I can when I watch. With Aloha...
Loving everything Cole. You are amazing and you are all doing a great job.
I have been watching since the beginning and love your videos! Can't wait to see the finished project.
You guys are amazing and I enjoy the content but not Cole yelling all the time. Sorry.😊
Came here for the farming footage since Cole was 22. And that includes the farm equipment. I li!e the Coopercam checkins. Can't wait for harvest.
Roman, good job I would have your welding buddy check the welding just to be safe. If you didn't get good penetration the welds could fail
You needed to have a good certified welder do that job. I do not think it is strong as it needs to be and would not pass inspection. Should have had your brother weld it all. That worries me.
Something to think about for those of us in the audience who are not farmers; when you are replacing an old part (such as the teeth on the combine) some of us might like to see a side-by-side comparison of the old and new to understand the wear-and-tear factor. I have to say, I am flabbergasted at how much maintenance (both preventive and repair) goes on on a farm. Makes me respect the food I buy in the store. You farm guys and gals are awesome.
Cole, tone your voice down a little, way too shrill.
Nails on a chalk board
Cole, I don't know if it's part of the "brand" or not but have you ever considered just talking in a normal tone of voice and not starting everything like you are yelling?
That's his thing.
@@dennislamers986 Yes! I believe he is doing it on purpose. I am about done. It is interesting but I am just tired of it.
wouldnt that be nice. I have asked before, others have asked before. Seems he cannot stop it.
He has oppositional disorder - the more people ask him to tone it down the more and louder he has to get. Can you imagine what he was like at two!🤣
Mute the video and stop whining.
Hey Papa Cole and Roman, well, you ate a few more bites of the elephant, right ?? I like that The Cooper Cam is incorporated into the daily update. It is good to see him and Zach.
Is Cole losing his hearing ? He yells when he speaks..
No he's just won't take his Ritalin.
Does Cole ever talk like a normal person? Or does he yell all the time?
always yells.
Heavy Equipment causes you to yell,
I think all the banging on farm implements impairs the hearing lol
@@sherylbentley3724 No it doesn't. How many equipment operator or farmers walk around screaming all the time?
Yea!!!!!!!!you all are amazing! So excited for Harvest! And for the house work! DC you keep them straight!
Why does he have to yell
Watching from West Virginia.
Welding sticks? 🤦🏻♂️😆
Well done guys 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You're watching Corn the Colestar!
Can’t wait for the basement floor pouring!!!
Beautiful job! Cant wait for the basement cleanup!❤
When it comes to electric motors, the lower the voltage gets, the more current they draw. Long extension cords will cause higher current draw on motors due to this, and you’ll trip breakers more often. Get a 10awg cord or get closer to the main panel
Yes! We use chop saws at work. You need to use 10ga. extension cord, especially under load at those distances. Saw pulls a lot of amps. Love the show! Keep yelling!!!! REB
@@robertbrinson400 Gee thanks!
Nice fabricating and welding there, Roman ? 👍
Love that you brought back the original intro....Heyyyy Everybody... you're watching Cooooollleeee the Cornstar!!!
Why not lag bolting the LVL to the metal bracket?
I thought the same thing. I don't think there is clearance for bolting.
@@nancyhowell8697 I'd have just left the support pole in place. Apparently Cole thinks they're going to be living in the basement full time.
Should’ve had Cooper weld the bracket to the beam 😅
I agree with the yelling comments seems like you get worse every episode. Calm down. I enjoy your podcast but the yelling is so annoying sometimes I shut it off.
He is definitely getting worse with every episode.
COLE is nave going to put some larger picture windows in anywhere like the kitchen or living room?? Love the cooper cam too
Dump Truck + Cooper + Zach = Repaired Like New! ❤
>25K views, but only >5K likes 🤯
You have great content. It's just your loud talking. Cooper, Roman and your Dad were all talking normal.
Roman that is a sheet metal break something that thick you need a hydraulic break.
😂 grown men crying about the audio levels on here? Grow em boys, they’ll eventually drop.
im a headphone user and his screaming gets old. I turn it down lower when he yells but then have to turn it up to hear others that arent yelling
Apparently, yours haven't dropped or you were raised by hyenas.
I bet you're one of those here just for Roman, you and your bottle of Jergens.
For safety, you need a full face shield with safety glasses.
Stop yelling at us 😭
CORN POWER 👍🇺🇸
Couple things: Don't pound on the battery terminals, gentle taps ok, rapping hard can break the post inside the battery then it's junk.
Second thing, build a press brake for the 20 ton press. It will bend 1/4" flat bar, pretty easy to build & use. I built one in a morning to bend 1/4" x 4" flat bar & it works great.
Not saying youre wrong at all about the battery and not beating on the posts but i have watched many many people do that for years on all kinds of batteries and ive never seen a single broken battery post in my life.
@@warrenmichael918 It happened to me a couple times in the 70't, but maybe newer technology makes a more robust battery. I generally will use a battery terminal spreader to get the terminal lower on the post, couple raps with the wrench is enough to seat it.
@@MarkBall3 Im sure it has and does happen but ive just never seen it myself. I have seen some serious damage to some cable terminals too, them suckers looked like they have been to Nam !! LOL
Hey Roman, did you finish the weld on the beam where Nick's welder died?
These guys are so amazing. Let’s let them be them, and just enjoy and learn.
If you can't weld well, weld a lot
A grinder and paint will make you the welder you aint
You got brilliant talented workers on the Farm! So many amazing skills between you five gentlemen! Well done!!
All that welding reminds me of watching Paul, Sr. And Paul, Jr. doing welding for their custom made motorcycles on American chopper!
First things first click on his video turn the volume down get ready to get yelled at
Don't watch then...problem solved.
GREAT content and like every good TH-camr they ask for advice from the comment section so we're just out here doing our thing. Tryin not to get screamed at
@@stevewayne3676I think it's the dewy eyed fangirls' job to come running to Cole's defense but I'm sure they appreciate the assist!
@@oldasrocks9121 Go take your arthritis meds and grow up 😆
Good to see daddy corn star. He looks good and seems to be in good spirits. Love you and your family.
What is the plan for venting your plumbing drainage
same as anyones would be with a basement, once he runs his pipes upstairs to the drains, he will continue them up and out through the roof as vents.
C channel bottom, angle iron top, band iron strap, use dimensional steel to your advantage in situations like this. It's already been figured out. Weld flat whenever possible.
sorry but those U bracket welds are terrible to be structural and it needs gussets with perpendicular welds
Cole you need to pull you ear plugs out or learn how to turn you voice volume down.
I love that you've included Cooper in your recent videos. The naysayers are just a$$holes. You are trying to show the entire farm experience/lifestyle and I appreciate that.
You young gentleman are amazing, not only with your obvious talent, but also for the honorable way you live your lives. Blessings to you.
For Roman; the brake he was using is only for metal up to 12 gauge sheet metal; 10 gauge on up to plate steel will not bend
