Thanks for having Joe as a guest. I have followed Joe's work for years. I had the privilege to meet him at WPPI. He was gacious to take a photo with me before going on stage to do a presentation.

Frank Frazetta, Green Lantern, Marvel...That explains a lot about why Joe McNally's pictures are so great.
Drawing inspiration from sourcesxoutside photography is crucial to doing truly creative work.

Two of my favorite guys "Coffee with Creators" instead of "Comedians in Cars". So great take home nuggets of gold. The "You have to be happy, and in love with, the Click of the shutter, because that moment is yours". It's your "singular act of declarative intent". WOW. Love it. At the end of the day, what is left. "The Photograph". These are the kind of statements that had me captivated the entire interview (but you had me from pancakes vs french toast). "Get out of bed, and go". As for shooting without thinking about settings: Unconscious competence. ;-)

I attended Joe's workshop in Bangalore, India in 2018. What a great artist and yet so humble, friendly and fun at the same time.

This is why you have to listening to Joe.... "In that Rolodex is a substantial list of failure"... so honest and so correct. Any photographer that claims otherwise... "Oh Im the best photographer in X location, or X location's premier photographer"..... BLAH!!! next!!!
Photographers are ALWAYS learning and problems solving.... some have more experience than others... but we should always be looking to learning something and looking at ways to improve, and accept that things don't always go to plan 100%

Love listening to Joe... there is no bullsh#t from him... its just honest, relevant insight to an actual working photographer in the industry (rare among TH-cam photographers and brand ambassadors). And you can take his insight and apply to many genres of photography, not just one. The cockroach analogy is sooo true. The nuclear bomb will kill some photographers (those entering industry to make fast money on a one time image formula, those looking for just the "glamour" of it... whatever that means)... but some will always find a way to survive (eating rice and soy sauce, not running heating etc etc) cause they simply job, and all the trappings that come with it. For me, it was the ability to freeze life and be able to display it later on.

"Come on, we don't think about it, we're photographers... light enters the lens, hits the chip, makes a picture... heeyyyyyy!!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
"And inside, when we hit that shutter button, its figgin Star Wars"...... amazing quotes

😆😆😆 just as Joe is remarking about accessibility of gear, and people thinks its a superhighway to success..... guy in background walks past with a truckload of gear 🤣🤣

technology advancements over the last few decades have been great... film to digital was necessary one on so many levels. But I do wish now, before camera manufactures leap into something, they do think about downsides... example is mirrorless not being able to recognize IR beam from speedlights for focus assist. This is a massive downgrade that affects large majority of event photographers.

I wish people would mix the audio from separate mics to the same level.
