    That's actually how I learned to draw, like he said at the beginning. From copying from comics, and pausing cartoons, (on video tape) and then copying the images as a kid. I never realized I was unintentionally teaching myself how to draw.

    You influenced my childhood, making me want to be creative, want to draw and make those drawings live. Mister Bluth, I do not know if you read these, but thank you.

    Don Bluth encapsulated our childhoods for those that grew up in the 80s and 90s. he brought us laughter, fear, anger, and sadness. He wasn't afraid to show the dark side of life and definitely didn't baby us like a lot of people did and still do. Thank you Don Bluth.

    You can't run until you can walk, and you can't express your own pov in art unless you have the basic skills of drawing down, such as hand-eye coordination and observational skills, which many artists learn by copying others work when they're starting off.

    This is upresidented. No other master of Don's level has been so gracious with his experience, approach and technique. This should be the starting point for any young artist or hopefull animator. I hope Don is ok with this stuff being on TH-cam; It's a genuine gift to the public. If Don himself is activly working with this channel then I can only say, it's like talking to one of my all-time biggest heros! Thanks!

    I'd always thought that drawing a quick sketch was just unneeded time... But as I've gotten much better over the years, It actually saves me time by not having to guess and estimae what goes where.

    Thank you for such a helpful video! Its interesting to know that copying can actually be a good thing in learning to draw. I had always felt almost guilty in the past when trying to imitate another picture, feeling I should just figure out how to draw and what completely on my own. This video really made me realize how helpful it could actually be.

    Dragon's Lair by far has the biggest impact on me for my love of animation and me wanting to be an animator. God Bless you sir and every thing you've done for us!

    So true what Don says about school. My creativity suffered during my years in animation school cuz I was struggling with the technical stuff. After school, I slowly got my creativity going again, however the technical stuff is suffering now. :/

    I don't longer use traditional pencils, I use mechanical pencils instead, I use two separate mech pencils, one with 2H thickness and the other with 3B thickness.
    With 2H I sketch and with 3B I detail, much like Mr. Bluth does in his videos ^_^
    I recommend you to use mech pencils if you don't wanna break them all the time, :3

  • @Dalen77
    @Dalen77 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thats a dark pencil hes using dark soft lead looks like a tombo im not sure, Ive found those pencils break a lot. I like using the stadelter 2b, i remember going to a toonup seminar years ago and Don had all these story boards out for dragons lair the movie, they like covered the whole wall, it would be great to see them again, or maybe they could be published or shown on his website, the drawings were really cool.

    Any where I can find Don drawing these characters all the way through? Most of the time, it's footage of him drawing, then suddenly cuts to where he's half way done.

    I had these DVD's way back when... well when DVD Players were still a thing. You could make a fortune if you would sell them as digital downloads on an accessible platform like Gumroad or something like it. Would love to watch them again!

    I've always liked his movies better than Disney. Especially Land Before Time & All Dogs Go 2 Heaven. I liked Disney when I was little, but now I don't really care 4 it. They R a big corporation who pretty much rule the world of animation.

      +ROSEMOON i prefer the underdogs aswell, and don bluth animation has this strange kind of feeling to it, that it's like Disney animation but it's completely different. His animation just seems... i guess the best way to explain it is unique. In which it's an animation style like no other. Also i grew up with those 2 movies aswell! but i grew up with the 1st all dogs go to heaven aswell

    I don't think this is the best advice :( Study from life. I video tape and photo everything for reference. Especially now that smart phones are so pre levant and have such good quality cameras ;) It's OK to study other peoples art, and when I was young I was lucky to be mentored by some great artists. But never copy anyone and every artist has a different solution to different art problems. See what they do, play to see what works for you. Go to a life drawing class, draw your pet or people in a Coffee shop. I think if you are a 10 year old kid it's good advice to get you started, but if you are in High school please don't.

    • @Fraggle24
      @Fraggle24 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure that's not what he's trying to teach.. What I got out of the lesson was.. If you want to learn how to start drawing, or want to learn a certain style from a favorite artist. Watch how that person works, take notes from what he/she does and apply it to your own work, incorporate other methods that you like that maybe others do that you like and eventually create a style of your own so it doesn't seem like you're just copying what other people out there are already doing. .. if that makes any sense.. (3am brain farts)

    • @GalekC
      @GalekC 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Manestream I think the main key to drawing is learning, which is not entirely self-practice. Almost every artist I see says that they got to where they were by practicing. But, it doesn't make sense to practice without knowledge of the principals. In the grand scheme, it's mainly about learning. So, I'm with Mr. Bluth on this one.

    • @lazedreamor2318
      @lazedreamor2318 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's nothing really wrong with copying from a learning standpoint no matter what age (horrible advice btw. Others have made it far through copying at an adult age). Especially if you're a beginner since it helps establish a baseline you can develop through studying other artists and life. It's an incredibly relevant way of practicing that even masters has done.
