I just bought asparagus today. I had no idea what I was going to do. I thougth about container gardening and looked around on youtube on how to do this...this video was the best, most informational, and loved that you showed as time went by, what to do. Great videoing. I look forward to this spring when you share another update of these asparagus.
Love watching your videos on gardening...Nancy does a great job with the camera..you keep them coming and I'll keep enjoying them..We just bought a 6 acre homestead and we're slowly getting a plan in place (around the horses, goats chickens etc) Cheers from Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada Paul

Ty so much for showing the progression of the growth of asparagus….I haven’t seen anyone else show this and I now know what to look for after planting my in the ground for the first time….and I purchased that EZ Straw from True Value Ace Hardware to use in my garden bed too……I had purchased a bail of straw from a feed store and it was so long and had seed tips in it….I like this straw much better….ty you both for taking the time to post all your videos……you are my favorite!!!!🥰👵🏻
Hollis and Nancy. Thank you for the lessons on asparagus. Mine have been in the ground for 3 years and have totally fizzed. We got 2 spears and ferns were only eighteen inches high. Thanks again for your time and your effort.John in Australia.
I just found your channel. Subscribed! Thank you. I love your explanations, the follow ups on things you've planted. Awesome! You have inspired, this city gal.
Looking good! Nice size. I like to start some of my asparagus from seed and I leave them in patio containers for at least 1 full year. I've started well over 1000 plants this way. I really like what you've done with yours.
+MrChipGardener Thanks for watching. We are moving To a rural homestead in Florida next summer. Planning to build a 4' x 20' raised bed for asparagus when we get there. 👍
+MrChipGardener I was born and raised in Jacksonville. We are looking at a small town just north of Jacksonville called Hilliard. That area has lots of urban properties and will be close to my daughter. We are so excited 😇

I wish I had watched you before I spent 7.00 on small window planters. I love the idea of using lowes buckets for the asparagus I bought. I just moved to az and still learning about growing here. keep up the videos there awesome.
Excellent video. I just planted 9 in a square raised bed. It's summer here in Sydney, Australia so I will top up the soil and mulch. Can't wait to see your harvest
Hollis & Nancy's Homestead mine have died back. I was wondering if you could tell me where to cut them back - at ground level? Or do you leave a little poking up?

Hello Hollis and Nancy. Can not tell you how happy I found your videos and now that you are in FL, its even better! I live in zone 10a in FL. I planted asparagus in containers last fall and they are just as happy as can be, thanks to your instructions! My question is: after I cut back the dry shoots (after they die back for fall) how to I replenish the nutrients for next season??
I really learned a lot with growing asparagus. I have mine in raised beds and I see I planted them wrong. Some didn't even make it. I will be planting some more this spring but I'll do it right. Thank you so much for your wisdom.
Very interesting thank you, I didn't know much about growing this, no wonder it costs 3$ a pound at the store, it takes time and patience. Merry Christmas !
Great video ! I planted a total of 65 Millenium and Purple Passion Asparagus plants in the ground 6 weeks ago and they are about 1/8" in diameter at best and some are 2 feet tall at best but most are much smaller. Hoping they grow alot more so they can survive the winter here in Massachusetts.
I have 7 - 1/2 barrels with asparagus. I can finally eat some, spring of 2018. I'm excited...in mean time, Kroger had it for .99 cents a lb...so I have stocked up, oh some. God is good

My sweet potato plants are doing well & flowering in containers & im hoping for a 1st winter harvest next month or so!!
Oh my goodness.. I'm glad I saw this video as I was about to get rid of my asparagus because they look like yours... I thought they were dead,lol... Thanks for the tip... will clip them back tomorrow..
Hollis and Nancy, I love your videos. Thank you both for making them. Where do you get the large plastic tubs with the rope handles as shown in the container asparagus videos?
Great instructional video! Thank you! Wondering though, I presume I could chop up the dried up ferns and add them to the mulch, correct? Of course, picking off the seed berries so they won't compete with the "mother" plant in the event they self sprout.
How many containers do I need to satisfie a good harvest for 1- 2 people Im very new to this I have no yard but have plenty sun light to work with, but I may have to move on a short notice that is why I m a containwr grower so I can take my food source with me... I love asparagus but never have grown them for myself
Great video But how do you grow Hollandaise sauce?. Love all your video and your sweet wife cooking video. May God Bless y'all and Merry Christmas. Remember safety is number one on your Homestead.

Decided not to grow given the sunlight requirements and work and space involved since i can get them reduced at the supermarket for a pittance. But they are quite pretty as plants.

I loved this. I want to do it on raised bed, but I prefer containers so I can take it with me whenever Or if I move just because it take such a long time to grow. One question, will it survive throw snow? I live in Kansas City and we get snow sometimes.
+Karen Hightower Congratulations on your retirement!!! So happy for you. You will love spending time in your garden every morning. It is such a place of peace 😇😇. They have professional grade containers for the same price as the containers I was buying at LOWES. I am very pleased with their containers. @@HollisNancysHomestead I went to the website at the link you posted but I can't find any growing containers - except growing bags which they are apparently out of. I say apparently because even though they don't tell you it's out of stock on their product page (which they should) they then take you to a page that says "you have 0 items in your cart." Then you have to try to navigate back to their product page - which can only be done by returning to the home page and starting all over at the beginning...which I did several times - and got the same message and had to repeat the entire process. VERY FRUSTRATING. This website is NOT user friendly. I finally gave up on them. I can't waste any more time on a website that can't be bothered to make itself user accessible. I would call them for assistance but they don't even list a business phone number on their contact page. Never mind. I'll look elsewhere.
thank you so much for this video iv been waiting for this video update I cut mine back months ago and they haven't grown back since and we were in a severe drought here in Georgia even after Hurricane Matthew I'm in Zone 7b, will they grow back in the spring since I cut them back in the summer there 2 year old roots I think
+Shakena Mincey They should not be cut back if they are still green. If they don't emerge in the spring they are most likely dead. You can replant and give it another try. Remember, it is not failure if we learn from it. Don't give up, you are now more experienced. We learn more from our mistakes than we do from our successes
I figured that lol ,I have one root that is still green from the whole patch that I planted that I didn't cut and survived the drought , so I'll wait to see what happens in the spring ,thanks for the help Happy Holidays and God Bless you guys
Did you move them down to Florida because, I have not seen them on the new homestead. I planted the same variety and mine are now 4 years old. I really enjoyed them this spring and had to be careful to leave my tithe for the Lord. They sure are wonderful.
+Amie Adams The shredded leaves are fine too. I prefer the mulch because I only add it once per year and it last. It has better moisture retention that leaves as well. Yes the leaves will break down adding nutrients. I like how you think👍
+Kevin Lee I bought these at LOWES. They usually sell out quickly. I started buying all my containers online from Zen Hydro. Here is a link to their site: www.zenhydro.com/gro-pro-premium-nursery-pot-20-gallon.html?cmp=cel&trigger=ac

Would it be a good idea to plant strawberries in large pots together with asparaguses?
I would not plant anything in the pots with them. They have a massive root system and will starve the berries

thank you so much for this video iv been waiting for this video update I cut mine back months ago and they haven't grown back since and we were in a severe drought here in Georgia even after Hurricane Matthew I'm in Zone 7b, will they grow back in the spring since I cut them back in the summer there 2 year old roots I think
+Shakena Mincey
They should not be cut back if they are still green.

Peace to you 😍
Florida has a lot of pine trees. Is it wise to collect the fallen pine needles to use as mulch?
Pine needles are Very acidic, not many plant choices for growing near or under evergreen tree.
Did you move them down to Florida because, I have not seen them on the new homestead. I planted the same variety and mine are now 4 years old. I really enjoyed them this spring and had to be careful to leave my tithe for the Lord. They sure are wonderful.
Yes we did
Blessings
Can you do an update on them this spring/summer please?
+Amber Simmons
Oh yes, we are planning a harvest video very soon👍
do yal water them in the winter if so how often
+Joey Chancey
I don't water in the winter to avoid root rot
I'm planning to plant crowns in the ground. I live in zone 8 b, Natchitoches LA...today is feb 22...is it too early to plant now?
Are there holes in container. Where did you get them
Yes to promote drainage. I drilled several 3/4” diameter holes. I got the tubs from Lowes👍
wouldn't shredded leaves work really well also? instead of the ezstraw? because of the nutrients also ?
+Amie Adams
The shredded leaves are fine too. I prefer the mulch because I only add it once per year and it last. It has better moisture retention that leaves as well. Yes the leaves will break down adding nutrients. I like how you think👍
Since I live in a 10b area and never gets any snow in the winters, should I still use the straw mulch?
Not required for snow or ice but helps with water moisture retention
Did you guys move the asparagus pots with you when you moved to the country.if so how are they doing.love yalls videos.and God Bless.
I love all your videos. just wanted to ask where you get your Containers? thanks karen in ga.
Same here! Want to know where to get the containers? I am in George Atlanta 😊 thank you

I bought these at LOWES. They usually sell out quickly. I started buying all my containers online from Zen Hydro. Here is a link to their site:
