    Dear Marc!! Thank you so much for your video!! After 10 (!) years of using my (good!) bow ( mainly on a mongol Morin Khuur - later on my selfbuilt Cello) - that I bought in Shenzen it defenetly needed a proper cleaing!! - So I did like you showed!! Works wonderful!! - I used 50ml 96% alcohol & 10ml nailpolish remover ( with aceton) 2 times & 3nd time just alcohol!! Works super duper!! Thanx a lot!!

    What about using denatured alcohol? That will take longer to dry but might be less risky. You still have to keep that away from anything varnished like the stick.

      Yes, acetone is strong, and one have to be really careful not to spill any on the varnish!

    Thanks for the good information Marc .
    Why not just let the residual acetone evaporate later
    outside , rather than putting it down the drain ?

      You're absolutely right, Robert! As someone else pointed out also, the acetone has a very damaging environmental impact. I just didn't get to update the info (and even better, make a new video). Thanks for pointing it out. I'll update the info now...

    Warm soapy water followed by a clear water rinse does a good job as well.

    This damages the hair??

    • @marcgrue
      @marcgrue  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not that I know off. But be careful to keep any acetone away from the stick - it can damage the varnish!

      It doesn't feel that way. But it would be interesting to compare new hairs vs old hairs vs cleaned hairs in a microscope to see if one can spot some differences...

    Okay, I don't mean to criticize but you really should not be pouring acetone down your drain. Pour it onto paper towels, let them dry and throw them away. Acetone has a fairly strong negative effect on how sewage treatment plants work. Also, you wouldn't want to put it into a septic system either. It kills the bacteria that break down sewage into substances that can safely be returned to the earth. And btw, the same goes for denatured alcohol.
    Sorry, I just had to say that.

      Hi Ken. Thanks for your thoughtful comment that I really appreciate. I have had a nagging bad consciousness from pouring out the acetone and obviously I haven't thought out this aspect. Your idea is excellent and I think I will probably make a new video using your idea and take this one down. Maybe it would be even better to pour the used acetone on some old cloth and let that dry? Then we wouldn't even waste paper.

      @@marcgrue I think maybe the most environmental friendly (and definitely most fun) solution would be Burning it.

    Hello sir, can I use nail acetone for cleaning my bow?

    • @marcgrue
      @marcgrue  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know. But I wouldn't count on it since there could be other chemicals mixed into it that could have unwanted effects (if there isn't, then it should be fine).

    Is acetone the only chemical you should use?

    • @marcgrue
      @marcgrue  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nikko - I have only used acetone successfully... Good luck!

      Some use alcohol (pure, not whiskey ;-).

      Great that denatured alcohol works for you, Ishmeet. Acetone works fine for me.

    What type of acetone to use??

    • @marcgrue
      @marcgrue  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Maniac Saiyan. I use a simple acetone that you should be able to buy in your local supply shop. It’s important that it is withOUT oil in it.

      No, it has to be normal simple clean acetone _without oil_ that you should be able to buy in your local supply shop.

      Hi Rus - I also tried alcohol before. But I found that it did't resolve the rosin completely so that it would remain sticky. Acetone did the job for me. But great if alcohol works for you! :-)
