- In this synthwave bass tutorial we design a preset using some modern and classic techniques. I'm using PhasePlant in this video, but other synths like Serum and Vital can get similar results.

The moment you paused the mix and that reverb tail appeared, that is the secrete sauce to glue everything :)
Well, reverb is only on some elements, well only really that lead synth while everything else is much less laced with reverb. Tons of verb is a common mistake

Great informative videos as usual. long winded and ranty but great! none the less (i get the comedy side of it). About the LUFS and mixing loud thing, i know to get decent sounding not squashed loud commercial level mixes you have to do alot of things ahead of time, sound design, clippers etc but ive always thought why go through all that trouble when i can just turn my volume knob up on my stereo slightly. You said why adhere to a loudness level anyway when it could just change in time, which i agree with, so it works both ways, why would i wanna hit -4-6 lufs when i can just do -8 or -9 and save time with just turning my volume knob up and keep more dynamics. Interested in your opinion on that. BTW the Track is some of the sickest Synthwave ive heard in a long time.

I might mix closer to 0 LUFS, but with my sound and mastering chain I might only get to -7 LUFS so it still sounds good. And yes, I have inflators and all that stuff, even though I don't normally use them. So I'm mastering around -10 LUFS these days. How do you manage that?
It's a multilayer approach using busses, clippers, limiters, soothe, sidechain. Layer by layer. Things get clipped and limited at each step of the process.
I think inflator is just a soft clipper. Might as well get vclip or kclip or Saturate.

Before I go running and asking in some facebook groups, can you tell me if you mix/master to -5 LUFS and 0.0dB true peak, or -1.0dB like nice people from Spotify tell us to do? Thank you! P.S.: Thanks for introducing me to Phase Plant. I can ditch my Diva now and get some real ladies at the club!
I master to -0.1 at -0.4/5lufs. Seems to work well for me. I want it to compete with other tracks. They generally are similar.
@@ElianaDAngelo Thanks, that helps! It is strange like sometimes I am able to get -5/6LUFS at -1.0dB and sometimes don't seem to be able to get the mix to less than -7/8LUFS at -0.1dB... But then I am a noob who is still learning, so most likely mistakes in writing or sound design will be to blame. Well, back to the drawing board... Wish you best of luck with the song, it sounds great!
