Camera angles...and heels. Don't forget heels will add 3-5+ inches (3 inches is the average heel height but celebrities usually wear higher heels).
The biggest surprise to me was Judy Garland. I would've thought she was around 5'4" or something like that, not 4'11".

Well, this is less 'shocking' after watching how tall their male counterparts are / were. However, that Kate Hepburn was smaller than Audrey really surprises me and shows how much is done by body shape, clothes, high heels, camera angels etc. etc.

I was invited me to attend a sales party for TV stations from outside the US on Warner Brother Burbank lot twenty years ago. I am 6’2” and was about 200# at the time and I felt like a giant among the talent. I don’t know why, but it seems entertainers for the most part are very small people.

Yup. Surprising that most well known figures are petite. I guess when there were younger, they worked damned hard to counter this fact and turned out to be brilliant actresses. Tall leggy ones has the tendency to fall into dumb blondes sterotype since it is a mens world out there. Not anymore now.

It’s easier to film shorter People I believe… For some reason.. And it’s more than the camera adds ten pounds supposedly.. Probably cheaper to make sets for them and to fit more than one Person into the shot.. I worked, very limited short time, in photography..

If I was ever to come across these shorter, yet well known, actresses (actors too), I think I'd be surprised expecting them to be much taller being accustomed with seeing them at near horizontal eye level.

I met James Tolkan, the bald officer who yells at Tom Cruise in Top Gun. I would thought of him as huge. I could see the top of his head. Im 5'6". He also follows me in the phone book and I'd occasionally get his calls.
I was surprised at the height of some of these actresses who have also been models. I'm 5'10" and during my first year at uni in the 70s a friend of mine who did catwalk modelling to get some extra cash suggested I apply to the agency she worked for. She gave me a form with all the requirements: minimum height 5'10!

This is the states but Uk and states are pretty much the same. Even at peak heights less than 2% of females reach 5’10. You will know taller people either because of your family (I’m guessing you come from a tallish family), and or your profession. Models will meet others. It’s rare for a lady to grow that tall. I’ve learned that much making these videos

Im 5’6 this honestly makes me feel oddly better about it? I always would have preferred being taller . Even the start of the video got me thinking maybe proportions would be better if I was shorter and more petite , but the versatility of 5’6 is nice

Claudia Wells and Elizabeth Shue both got cast in "Back to the Future" for that reason. Michael J. Fox was cast, so they fired the previous actress chosen for making him look too short. Many scenes had to be reshot.

Thing is most people who make height stuff don’t do any research. It’s actually quite easy because you get to look at a lot of pictures while gathering height info. It’s not as tough as you might think
I'm 6'1 but everytime I go to a swedish supermarket there are at least a couple of women taller than me without heels and not being trannies as far as I know.

Average female height in the US is 5'4'' so that is why it is very common to see short actresses. Not because height equate to talents, but they are just bigger in population. I find it is ridiculuous how some these people corelate their height to their talents.

5’6 is fairly tall for a female in most countries
I’m taller than the majority-5’8”. But until recently tall people had a harder time because the majority of cameras caught people of 5’4” to 5’7”. Most of the Golden Age performers were short. BYW, why not include Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Jessica Lange, and Sissy Spacek?

I am 5 foot and I always wished to be taller, but after all these years I realize short can be a good thing. Nothing to worry about. 5 feet women's legs wrap around just as nicely.
Is this data accurate? I mean seriously 5'1 . My entire life, i thought in US it is very common to have height above 5'5. When I was a kid, I got to know about US through WWF and WWE card games. where me and my friends use to battle with cards. We battle with rank, height, weight, chest, biceps. The common thing in all the cards were the wrestlers gt height above 6 and 5'7 was like the max lowest.

I didn't know so many actresses were below 5' 4'', because most of them tend to wear high heels that make them look over 5' 8''. Most of the women I've dated seem to be well over 5' 10'' just because of those high heel shoes, but they were probably just over 5' 8''.

Heels don’t actually give you as much as you think! My wife’s 4 inch heels give her 2.5 inch for example. Must be because your toes are still on the deck

It's sad to think it doesn't matter how tall an actress is. She's attractive, that's all that matters. But when it comes to the guys, they're height shamed if they're below 5ft 8in.
Yea I get what you mean. Even Tom cruise who’s over 5’7 has had the short syndrome stuff thrown at him. It’s just the way the world works I guess

Totally unconvincing. I have read many Reacher books, so inevitably we have our own idea what he looks like ( I had got Chuck Norris in my head) so when little Tommy played him. Oh dear, what a disappointment.

Actresses would HAVE to be short. Most actors aren't gonna be 6 plus, they are theater geeks. Probably around 5'8". And the "guy" needs to be taller than the "girl" in the movie. Tom Cruise is 5'7" (I think). He is always paired with short women, or never shown at the same level. You cast tall women if you need an "imposing, strong, tough woman."

@@amoore2165 umm, not really. The MAJORITY are shorter. They showed the VERY few that are over 6' for completion. If they showed percentages most are probably under 5'6"

Checked in to see if my perceptions were correct - Nope. It seems that being 5'5" or taller is somewhat of a prerequisite to be an actress, which is taller than the 5'4" average height for women.

Actually, I sorta felt she was tall, I just didn't know that she was a giant compared to most of the female actresses.
Tripped me out. Ladies I pictured as statuesque are actually vertically challenged, and those I thought short were above average height.
I just thought generally they were slightly shorter than my initial perception

Ironically in the most recent version of Wonder Woman in the DC comics, she is now 6-2. In the first pilot of Wonder Woman back in 1974, Cathy Lee Crosby is 5-8.

It had lackluster ratings so it didn't get picked up, and a year later they launched the show again, this time with Lynda Carter. Cathy Lee Crosby was a professional tennis player in the 60s and went into tv acting when she quit. Crosby was actually pretty well known back in the 1970s and early 80s.

Though I'm sure most of these stats are accurate. I saw a mini bio on TCM about Doris Day & that stated she was 5' 10" . Also as a fan of Nicole Kidman , all the stats I ever read on her had her at 5"11" . That was a big deal around the time of her divorce from Tom Cruise because she stated that she could never wear heels around him as she was already 2 inches taller than him. Best thng to ever happen was for her to get that divorce & start wearing 5 inch heels.

5’10??? 🤣. Sorry for laughing but I’ve never heard that one. Her driving licence says 5’7 and that’s the maximum I’d say. Regarding Tom cruise, he’s taller than most people give him credit for. He looks almost as tall as Nicole Kidman in many of their photos, I think my listing is perfect
