I could bring my purple carrots. They got bigger, straighter, and tastier than anything I've grown before. My bearded vampire carrots, Pusa Asita Black. :D And my Calendula that has followed me for over 17 years.
Two best pieces of advice I ever got were, never miss a chance to keep your mouth shut and your ears open you never know what you’ll learn. Second, smile no matter what it will make people wonder what you’re up to!
Firstly, congrats on your placing! I can absolutely relate to your feelings, because thanks to you (yes, I am blaming you again, Eli!) I entered the Horticultural section of our Annual District Horticultural and Industrial Society Show last weekend. I always enter the Industrial section (aka Handcrafts - knitting, embroidery etc, Baking and Jams, Wine etc) and frequently come away with placements. However, I was persuaded by Eli (yes, you!) to buy a GreenStalk and take up gardening this year. I stuck 4 viola seedlings in the GS mixed in with veg and herbs. In the “Border bed” (a fancy name for a patch of dirt previously home to nettles and other weeds) I threw some calendula seeds. I was awarded Best Exhibit for my 6 viola heads on their display board which I finished constructing at midnight and 1st Place for my calendula. I was over the moon, especially after speaking to the Judge later who said he had not seen such perfect violas in 15 years of judging. I literally had no clue what I was doing, neither growing nor showing!! 😂 All thanks to you, Eli! I will definitely be doing it again next year, along with my handcrafts.
Thank you for being brave enough to enter! I’ve often wondered what happens at these shows. Think I may visit one now. And congratulations on placing second! 👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much for covering the show. Great to hear from the judge, especially his comments about my winning onions. First time showing and 2 firsts and a second for the red onion. Great fun. Thanks again and heres to next year's show, hope to see you there.
@@eliandkate I did see you there but didn't want to interrupt you. Totally agree with supporting your local shows. I was shocked I got anything, like you we just put in veg to support the show.
Yeah I'm going to show my onions, but before I do that I have to whip them! Joking apart those are some fabulous onions and you should be proud of yourself.
I entered the agricultural show with my jam, but you can enter everything from rhubarb to relish! It's another way to show what you're growing or the produce of what you have grown. I came away with second and was absolutely delighted. It is great fun and really addictive.
Congratulations on your 2nd place! What a great experience. Here in the states, we have county fairs where people enter vegetables, canned goods, pies, flowers, crafts, animals and many other things. I enjoy going and seeing what my community has been working on. I've had some lovely sunflowers this year, that's what I would enter.
Yeah I think it’s quite similar, just that the emphasis is on the flowers and veg and it’s a bit more serious about the growing. We have county fairs too and they sound just like yours 😁
I entered my first show on 31st August. A few flowers from garden and the odd thing from the allotment. Ended up winning the 1 veg 1 flower novice class for my carrot and orange dahlia. 😂 It was good fun to take part.
So interesting to know what they look for in judging. Well done on second place for your onions. I love Kate’s comment on what to grow. Lots of things 😂
Hi Eli & Kate, 😂😂😂 whipping onions, thats a very funny term. Well done! In getting second place ❤ really interesting & enjoyable video. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Great video, so interesting to hear what the judges are looking for. And well done again on your prize! We went to our local horticultural show last weekend, some of the entries were unreal, especially the dahlias 😍, I was sooooo impressed! But I was a bit disappointed they don't just make the entrants stand behind their stuff the entire time, so I could tell them how amazing they were and ask them all the hundreds of questions I had! 🤣 Seriously, how DO they grow such massive leeks, do they put them in some kind of weird restraint to keep them so straight as they get bigger??? The mind boggles! 🤔🤣
Congrats on your 2nd 🎉. I have entered at 2 local Horticulture shows for quite a few years. I decided to try a 3rd one this year. I totally agree with you that they need support. 🇨🇦 I mainly enter flowers, but tried my hand at rhubarb and peppers this year.
Hi from Idaho! Your wee niece is so impressed that you're a TH-camr, it's now the coolest thing she can think of, and she's quite a fan of your channel ❤
Enjoyed that Eli. Nice to have an insight into the judging. I have a very old guide book. No horticultural show here this year tho, due to organiser illness, but I LOVED it last year. Lots of fun.
Outstanding achievement! Now you're ready for the grand prize next year. It was a wonderful to follow you along on your show journey. The suspense was building waiting for the results. I'm so glad you not only had recognition, but enjoyed the experience.
Ha ha ha we wondered if anyone would notice that. She won it in the tombola, it’s a monitor riser for a desk…. So I have it under my computer monitor now

I was feeling a wee bit under pressure trying to film and keep us in shot and making sure the mic was pointing away from all the people chatting and things... I didn't get to take much in at the time 🤣🤣🤣
Congrats on your lovely onions. Looking forward to seeing the spring bulb show. Love learning about what they are actually looking for. The apples on display could also help you figure out earlier varieties to space out your harvest in years to come.
that was one of the things I was thinking about the apples. Because it's a local show for us, it lets us see what apples are ready earlier and are reliable for us - so useful
Well Done!! Amazing what you've grown in a small back garden 👏 you've inspired me so much to grow vegetables in my own small garden. Second prize first time showing is awesome 👍👍
Congratulations on 2nd place!! That was so much fun watching you get ready for the show and learning so much about the judging process. I always smile when I see you have a new video out. Thank you for sharing your experience. I may try growing onions again 🥰

Congratulations! 2nd place in a big lineup is very impressive (not like my second place in a bodybuilding contest.... in which there were only two of us ;).
@@eliandkate Lol. I was thinking that too after. It's hard to get veggies that look the same size and shape. I only managed to get 3 zucchinis this year and none of them looked even close to the other. Great job with your entry 🙂
Well done! I would never have thought of going in for something like this but after watching this, who knows? 😬. Funnily enough, one of my hair clients brother just went in for something like this for the first time and apparently got a lot of firsts, wouldn’t it be such a coincidence if it was this one you were at? Again, well done, I think you may have inspired quite a lot of people to try something similar. 😬

I could bring my purple carrots. They got bigger, straighter, and tastier than anything I've grown before. My bearded vampire carrots, Pusa Asita Black. :D And my Calendula that has followed me for over 17 years.
I think it would be peppers (depending on timing of when they hold the show). Your peppers are always amazing. Is there a show for earlier harvests?
I was a few weeks too early for my peppers grrrr
No not an earlier show I’m afraid but maybe next year
