    Ahh how that takes me back! I started out with a Cox 049 Stuka and went on for many years with a diverse range of machines. Getting the tune right was such a black art and each engine was different. My favourite was a Peacemaker running a Fox35 engine and it needed to be very lean on take off because the centrifugal effect when airborne caused the fuel to pressurise and run correctly. So much fun. And to all the R/C people out there, you can only really feel your plane when it's on the end of a pair of wires.

    Awesome!! Brings back my youth! I built and flew and crashed a bunch of Lil Wizards and Stuntman 23's and Lil Toot's, and...... The Lil Wizard was my first and favorite. Good times!

    My last c/l was a cox P-51d Mustang. The hands holding all the airplane together gave up after just so many crashes. Then I discovered girls. Damn, I should have stayed with the airplanes! Oh well, I still like to see the people keeping c/l alive. Thank you for a great vlog, I’ll sub and give a high five too!

    As a child in the late 80s, I loved these gas powered planes...their engines are like high revving diesels. I took the planes apart just to run the motor..

    I still have the Sterling Cub and the Lil Wizard hanging up in my garage. Haven't flown them in 41 years. I had a Stuntman 23 still in the kit, but sold it to a guy that "Really wanted it."

    My first kit plane was the Wizard you have here. Flew it a few hundred times I guess, the first loop I tried with it destroyed it. Good Video.

      My first UC plane was a Messerschmitt. Destroyed in the first looping attempt.
      After that I destroyed every UC plane I had in looping accidents. NEVER made it around in a full circle.
      Turned to RC flying after that, and so far no looping crash....

    Those little .049 motors must be scared to death of the guy in the ball cap, they say yes Sir and start right up.

    Reminds me of my control line airplanes. I had a Pt-19 and Super chipmunk. Both ran with the 049 engines. Great little airplanes but I tell you what you were dizzy by the time they ran out of fuel. Lol Great times.

    Lines are braided fishing line - very fine, strong and no stretch. Most popular brand name here is "Spiderwire". For a handle, anything will do. Simplest is a piece of broom handle maybe 150mm (6") long - with holes through at either end for the line. Adjust and tape in the middle. Next step up is a piece of thin plywood - cut to a pistol grip shape. Google search "control line handle" and you will find many variations. Fuel is "glow fuel", high nitro per earlier messages.

      Hahaaa!!! 4:22 looked pretty hairy for a second or so. The dive bomb brought back some unfortunate crash memories too lol. I’ve always wondered about using spectra fishing line. Looks like it works pretty good. Hope your still out there flying and what a bummer about the fuel. Go Cox!!!!

    For anybody interested in the history of U control, the fellow who invented and patented it was Jim Walker. There is some history about all this online. Here is a link that has some history and shows some photos of Jim Walker flying THREE U control planes at once. One by each hand, and the third using his head via a helmet (just scroll down the page to the bottom two photos). www.americanjuniorclassics.com/Jim%20Walker/jimwalker_audio.html

    Spiderwire (or equivalent) braided fishing line. Very strong, no perceptible stretch, and much less drag than Dacron. I believe we were using 36 ft lines in this video, and this length seems to work fine with .049 models.

    • @micregil
      @micregil 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, those Cox engines need the high nitro fuel and open the needle valve until the engine is really screaming, and I also used to fly my Cox half A's on thirty five foot lines (Dacron),it sure was fun.

    Have you tried it? I have enjoyed R/C models of all types since 1970s, and I still do (flew yesterday) but can assure you, the “hands-on” feel of a C/L model offers a very exciting alternative to those spring loaded Tx sticks. Not so much with these smaller models perhaps, but the pull on the lines of a larger model with the background racing by in a blur.... well... what can I say?

  • @jamesberwick2210
    @jamesberwick2210 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, sounds like a Cox engine. I quit using them and went with AME 061's. That, use 35% nitro, and small props and let them wind up. I had a Zaroli profile Nobler that flew pretty good using that combo, learned to fly full pattern with that, then out of boredom, converted that to a full fuselage and built up wing, looked like a full stunt ship. Flew pretty good, one of the guys liked it, bought it off me and crashed it. The Cox engines need that High Nitro fuel.

    great job, what kind of lines are you using?

  • @BansheeFifteen
    @BansheeFifteen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had a Stuntman 23, my friends had the Lil Wizard. My Stuntman flew ok, but the Golden Bee I had was fair power for it, but could have used more. My friends Lil Wizards were fine training cl planes, but we all never did anything more than climbs and dives and wingovers. Never a loop.But we sure did have fun with those.

  • @FarValley
    @FarValley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yep... No doubt these motors like high nitro. This season we are using 25% “racing” fuel, with much better results. We also have a litre of 30% in reserve.

    Hi guys. I just got a Cox plane for free. The piston was seized. Went through the motor and now it's looking good. The lines are gone, so my question is, what kind of line is it, and how does the handle looks like? And what fuel does it use? Thanks. Kristian

    The CUB had the same problem I had. Starts and runs well sitting still, then starved from fuel when flying.
    PROBLEM SOLVED: For U-Control the intake of fuel tube needs to be moved to the outside wall of the fuel tank at about a 45 degree angle.

    With RC so affordable these days, the big question for CL is why? Spinning around in a circle going up and down a bazillion times doesn't seem like much entertainment.

    Well hopefully you are using 1/2 A fuel and not just regular 10% nitro or something like that it's not the same 1/2 A has more nitro in it

    FUN! How I miss doing this.
    I went through 4 Stuntman 23's in the mid to late 1970s, all with Baby Bee or Golden Bee engines. I built mine with drop off landing gear for less drag and more performance.
    My last one I made in 1992 was scratch-built from memory using balsa stock. It had a Tee Dee .049 fed by a 3/4oz Sullivan tank which made a whole new plane out of it. it SCREAMED.
    Here's a Carl Goldberg Lil' Satan fitted with a front carburetor Cox Tee Dee .049. Really, it's the only way to go. The greater line tension let's you do anything and everything. If you can find a good deal on a TEE DEE motor, BUY it; th-cam.com/video/vFlZ7TvKKAA/w-d-xo.html
    The engines in the video sound a bit off and underpowered. Either worn cylinders or maybe not enough nitro in the fuel? 6x3 props, right? Get them running right and they'll be much more fun to fly. I ran 25% nitro if not using Cox-branded glow fuel.
    Today I fly and upgrade/modify micro RC birds. Many vids on my channel of them.
    Happy flying!

    Fun video. I had the same Cub back in the 70's Bad seals / leaky needle valve is more likely if it started well but "lost it" after running for a while. Follow the instructions outlined here: coxengines.ca/files/MRP.pdf they will run like clock work! (30% nitro helps :-) )
