    I've been a mechanic for 40 years, and anybody who thinks German cars are poorly engineered knows absolutely nothing about cars. German cars are the finest engineered cars on the planet, I've worked on everything under the the sun, and German cars are the best hands down. Do your research before you make statements you know nothing about. The reason BMW does not use a drain plug, is that it could cause a failure point for a leak.

      "The reason BMW does not use a drain plug, is that it could cause a failure point for a leak." More likely they want to discourage DIY types so they have to bring it into the dealership where they can generate more $$$ for BMW. As a mechanic, you probably won't agree.

      @@whothecapfits totally agree with u... and they even make it hard on them selves so they can charge xtra xtra money.... I work on cars as well.. and I never see a car leaking from drain plug... that is just an excuse so they can make a lot of money..

      True!!!! I own a BMW 428i Coupe and it’s awesome. People use and abuse these cars and when people buy them used, they tend to carry over all the negligence from the past owners. Take care of these cars and they’ll take care of you!!!!!!

    Thanks for posting the full procedure. Sorry you had to get a coolant shower.
    One tip for mixing coolant - keep your empty BMW coolant jug, and then in the future, pour half of new coolant into the old coolant jug, and then add the water to both jugs. You’ll have your two gallons of mixed coolant, already in the jugs. No need to mix them in a bucket.

    Great vid. I think if you left the cap open for the fill talk while bleeding you wouldn't need to open the bleeder screws. The air comes out of the port that shoots the coolant back into the tank as it recirculates.

    4 questions:
    1- Will it be okay to use Castrol blue color coolant instead of Bmw Coolant? (I have always used it on my all E36 E46 E90 without having any issue).
    2- Is it possible to remove the lower radiator hose from underneath the car without having to remove the air filter box?
    3-Is there any drain plug on F30 radiator?
    4-On F30 N13 engines without an electrical water pump, is it enough to remove the lower radiator hose for the draining process?
    Many thanks in advance!

      In order of your questions:
      1. Im not sure this is the first coolant flush I've done on a BMW.
      2. Not easily, the clip to unlock the pipe goes up towards the bottom of the air filter box
      3. There is no drain plug on the F30 Radiator
      4. I am not sure about the N13 engine

I have mechanical waterpump so skipped the electrical mechanial pump fill process. Used 50% 50% Blue color Castrol Radicool coolant and drinking water. Released air from both expansion tank and heat exchanger several times. So far so good. No need to pay extra for Bmw coolant.

      According to the documentation here: www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f30-328i-lim/repair-manuals/17-cooling/17-00-cooling-check/HrgIPzMT
      You are supposed to leave the bleeder screws open only when refilling in the expansion tank. All bleeder screws should be open. Once they start overfilling thats when you tighten them down, then make sure that the overfill is at the min/ max. After that you can start the bleeding process.

    When you do the electric pump bleeding process should you keep the tank cap open or closed??

    • @MatthewWong
      @MatthewWong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tank cap should be able to stay open. The tank is only for building pressure when the coolant is hot. You should only be leaving the bleeder screws open that way when it overfills at those areas it shows there are no air bubbles. So according to the instructions you posted
    TECHNICAL INFORMATION
    Filling without the vacuum filler device (watering can filling) is not permitted.
    Non-compliance will result in danger of component damage and/or engine damage.
    Filling specification absolutely must be adhered to.
    The operation of the vehicle is not permitted unless the filling procedure has been completed. Otherwise, functional limitations (degradation) and/or overheating may occur.
    A bleeding procedure is required after a part has been exchanged in the cooling system and/or after refilling the cooling system.

    • @MatthewWong
      @MatthewWong  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep BMW recommends you use a vacuum to make sure you get all the air out. I'm pretty sure they have been recommending this for a while now. But again as I mentioned I am not doing that. Most people who DIY this just flush the coolant out then run the standard bleeding process to get the remainder of the air out.
      For example even for the transmission flush BMW recommends a pump but it is not necessarily required in my opinion.

    • @MatthewWong

      When you pour the the coolant in it should force most of the air out. The left over air will be in the bends of the pipes and certain air pockets. Then you should begin the bleeding process which should pressurize the entire system. You can do this a couple times to be sure, or you can get one of those pressurized bleeders for the car also which should suck out all the air.

      I know previous generations of BMW's had a drain plug at the bottom of the rad. For some reason the N20 variations did not receive that at least to my knowledge on the F30 platforms. You can see the official NEWTIS repair steps provided by BMW here: www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f30-328i-lim/repair-manuals/17-cooling/17-00-cooling-check/1VnZAyo8nd they ask to remove the entire coolant hose at the bottom of the rad.

    Doing this on my F30 335i. Cannot believe BMW hasn’t just designed a fucking valve go drain it properly. It feels so primitive unplugging the EWater pump hose and lower radiator hose to drain coolant.

    Why was the fluid color so clear at 8:30, was that the distilled water flush?

    • @MatthewWong
      @MatthewWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think my car was previously in Arizona and the previous owner used significantly more water than coolant mixture.

      Thanks for the quick reply. I just replaced the thermostat and water pump on my F10 n63, there are videos on here flushing with straight distilled water before refilling with the 50/50. mix. You video Helped me out👍🏾

      @@twistedsd I think depending on where you are its fine to run distilled water. If you see your temp's start to rise you can mix in a % of coolant and it should help!

      I show the screws at 18:44 didn't really record the process of doing it. It is well documented in the newtis documentation: www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f30-328i-lim/repair-manuals/17-cooling/17-00-cooling-check/I4nHM7Ef

    Quick question, since I’m going to add some cooling into mine why is the old one that you took out clear but the new one is blue. I know that all the BMW coolant is blue but I was just wondering why yours was clear as well as mine that’s currently in the car

    • @MatthewWong
      @MatthewWong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My car was originally in Arizona so they probably diluted with more water than anti-freeze. That is why its probably so clear. But depending on where you live you should adjust the ratio if its colder, or hotter.

    • @DrTentaCulo

      @@MatthewWong thanks for the quick reply before I add some, I live in Cali so just picked some coolant to top it off since it’s at the minimum mark. I’ll just add some without diluting it then since it’s only a minimal amount, I was just wondering why it was so clear in mine LOL

    Please tell me how you have a f30 with power steering. You don’t have power steering. There is no fluid. It’s electric guy.
