  • Alright, you’ve heard me sing my praises for the Berkey Water Filter, but after receiving some opinionated comments about the Berkey on my videos, I decided I needed to know if it actually was making our water better for us.
I sent 3 samples out to an independent laboratory to test my water. First, directly from the wellhead, second after it had been through our whole house filtration system and into the kitchen faucet and lastly - after filtering through the Berkey Water Filter. I’m going to be completely transparent and share the process, my results and finally what I think about the Berkey after seeing it all.

I was just ordering my big Berkey with 2 extra filters and a stainless steel spigot when I suddenly remembered watching these videos and seeing a discount code offered at the end. I'm new to ordering things online but it was as simple as typing in TIDBITS and suddenly around 30 bucks was simply taken off the total charge to my card! 30 bucks is 30 bucks, and I'll take it!

I have a Berkey and was becoming frustrated with the negative reviews. I have several Berkeys, boat, house and farm, and have always found comfort from water safety they provide. I filter bottled spring water at home to remove micro plastic and have the heavy chemical filters on my boat Berkey. Thanks for your content and look forward to following along.

Lucky you to have high Lithium. Bet everybody in your house is super relaxed. Plus it greatly helps your body process B12 to get it into your brain.
I use my Berkey on city water with the Florida filter. I finally decided on it because I wanted something that is transportable. Which worked out perfectly when I moved 4 years ago.
I find if I drink water out of the Berkey, it's tasteless and flat. So sometimes I'll add some Redmond salt to give it a sweet flavor.
My grandmother had a spring fed pond that was 45F year round. That water had incredible taste as it filtered up though limestone.
It was so cool and delicious that as kids we would just run to the edge of the pond and put our faces in the water to get a drink. Millions of gallons flow through that pond daily so we never were concerned about contimants.
My family offered the water to a bottling company, but the calcium was so high it would ruin their equipment. I'd have thought calcium water would be a huge marketing advantage. Lol.

I agree that the filters seem to last about half of the life they advertise before they get so junked up that it takes forever (6 hours) just to filter a gallon. Also it seems that recently berkey decided to charge like twice as much for their filters compared to pre-pandemic costs. You used to be able to get 2 replacement black filters for like $90, now they're $170 which is a crazy price increase.

Would be interesting to know how many gallons of water were previously run through your Berkey filter? None of these gravity filters are ever tested to determine how effective they are at their stated capacity. In other words if the manufacturer says they're good for 3,000 gallons, well they still remove as many contaminants at say 2000 gallons, as they did when they were new?
Also would've been interesting to see how effective the Berkey would be filtering the water directly from the well.

Thank you for this corroboration! I love my Berkey travel size filter system. However, I filter the tap water through Brita water pitchers first and then through the Berkey. My dentist advised me to add a couple shakes of HImalayan salt into the water before I drink it as the Berkey apparently filters out too many minerals and I try to remember to do this. Also give my 2 cats the Berkey water. We're all healthy!

We normally buy 36 gallons of purified water and 4 32 count cases of bottled water every month. I hate the plastic! We are on a well that has high iron and manganese in it. And sediment. First important thing she said is know what is in your water. The second is to know your brand and see if they are a certified product and live up to their claims. Berkey is not certified and fails to live up to its claims according to this TH-cam provider th-cam.com/video/jct_bVz5eZc/w-d-xo.html . Next is to look at a side by side comparison of multiple water filters as is done on this TH-cam channel th-cam.com/video/ja0ioX6GSz0/w-d-xo.html . After my research I would not include Berkey in my top 20 water filters.

I think it's also important to note that the filtered water also saves your appliances, such as our coffee maker. The coffee maker was always getting gunked up with white water residuals. Since using the Berkey, our coffee makers last a long time. Most importantly, the water tastes great. The ice cubes don't have unknown particles floating in the water when they melt. He kept having swelling in his legs and didn't understand why. Once he changed brands it stopped. We have a Berkey just as a safe guard, we have water right off the mountain and noticed hard water deposits when we moved into the house. That is really the only reason we got it. Great video. The only thing that I haven't seen is how long the thing actually works. They claim thousands of gallons, but the only testing Berkey has done has been about 200 gallons and then they extrapolate the results to say 3k gallons. You didn't mention how old your filter is or how much has gone through it. Also, the fact that you have another system that comes between your well and your Berkey means it doesn't have to do as much work as someone who used it as their frontline system. Berkey claims that testing is too expensive, but given the prices they're charging I would think they should have the money to pay for it. That's what makes me skeptical. There can be a big difference between how it works at 200 vs 2k gallons depending on the source of your water. I think you're on the right track with the testing. I think I would test every 500 gallons through the lifecycle of the filter to know how long it actually functions based on my water source.

A note about collecting water test samples. For best results use a metal faucet that has no threads. Flame the outer end of the faucet a bit with a small torch to kill incidental coliforms from touching the faucet or splash from washing hands or dishes. Open the container as close to the faucet as possible collect the sample close the container as quickly as possible. Keep your fingers away from the neck of the container and the inside of the lid. Don't lean over or get your head above the container because the least little bit can contaminate and change the results.
Some water filters can become a source of contamination if bacteria collect in the filter and reproduce that can increase the number of coliform bacteria in your water sample. As for the Berkey water filters I have no idea of the effective lifespan. Elements in the filters particularly activated carbon can become overloaded with whatever things they collect a

You can buy a TDS meter for about twenty bucks, that is all you need to test your water. As a reference Distilled Water is 0. You have to check your Pre-water /post=water with a TDS meter, if you get closer to Zero, then you know how purified it really is. You are paying for extra tests for nothing. WHAT is your PPM after filtering any water through your Berkey. Just because a water tastes better, it does not mean that it is. Think of all the toxic Geoengineering Chemicals that are polluting everyones well water. Double RO filters with booster pumps and a couple of heavy metal filters work best. With regards to greensand vs reverse osmosis at 10:30, I think there might have been some confusion. Tapscore was likely recommending a RO drinking water system only, which is all around the best option for ensuring you have purified drinking water.
Since you say the local water guy said RO was overkill and led you to greensand, he was probably thinking whole house RO, which is usually reserved for wells with excessive TDS levels (>1500 ppm). In your case with TDS at 300, whole house RO is definitely overkill, but for drinking water it's a great option

Healthy water is the first step . The next step is taste. Super filtered water can be soft and very bland ? • @kicktree
      @kicktree 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@shilombaba Well actually the container was from ProOne back when the still called themselves ProPur I think. I got it in 2010. It is a 1.5 gallon. Its just me so I didn't need a big unit. It takes max 2 filters. I ended up with proones' prepper filters. They last about 1k gallons for the pair. 5" model.
I would think that you would want to get the 9" for large tanks, but with this in mind: how much water do you anticipate filtering in a year. If it is much less than the life of the filter or filters combined, the I would opt for the 7". Cheaper and it's performance range may fit your 1 year usage better. I use one year lifespan, because I have used filters like these before. They occasional decapitate or fall apart after 18 months or so. It is cheaper to get filters close to the one year mark to avoid all that. Having said that, the cost difference isn't that much, but the idea of spending for new filters can bother some people and when the break before maximum filtering capacity... it may miff some folks. Another thought on size. You want as much of the filter as possible to remain in the reservoir of water for as long as possible. Nothing pissed me off more when my berkey filters were not utilizing the whole filter for almost half of the process. I hope I didn't confuse you with all of my thoughts.

@@kicktree Interesting point with having filters submerged at maximum. I have a Travel size and a Big size (berkey ref). I thought on getting two 9s for the big, but I might go with 7s in that regard, altho, they are given for 10 months, not a full year. And if I apply that for the travel, I shall go below 7s, but that is a very short life span... decisions decisions.

I'm not a person to really salt my food during cooking or at the table so I know the water softener had to be the culprit. We switched to potassium crystals in the brine tank and when I had another blood draw several months later everything was balanced and normal. I would try a couple of bags and see if you can tell a difference. At my house now, we are on city water and we have a homemade Berkey filter. I noticed our old ones not filtering well even after I cleaned them and they had more build up faster. It was about 3 year in, so that is when I replaced them. Tap Score also told me it was very important to follow the guidelines for the filters because it can quickly change if the filters are too old. They just won't keep everything out and in fact might introduce more bacteria. So I am sticking with about 3 years!
