THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT MAN, WHEN I LISTEN TO IT, I ALWAYS SING THE HIGH NOTE AT THE END MY-FREAKING-SELF, but at least in this version the women's voices compensated for it.
Love how despite being a satire of jingoism (obviously you dont choose your nationality) it still sounds so seriously British that its inspiring anyway.
The last time I saw Pinafore was the DOyly Carte's production 1978 in Boston. When this was sung the first time at the end of the song the audience gave a prolong burst of appluse, which took the company and conductor by surprise, as this never happens. When the company sang this at the end of Act II finale, all hell broke loose in the theater. It was amazing... Thank D'Oyly Carte,
This was the best song of the play.. I sang that many years ago at my high School play, wish it sounded as good at this but I was only 18 and that was over 50 years ago. lol but you know I still remember that song and that day. What fun it was doing this play and the parties after. What a good memory this is.

Go Andrew Jones - a rising star at Opera Australia - and justly so!!! He was simply fabulous as Papageno in the most recent (2012) production of The Magic Flute.
@@javimiami92 well remembered; a wonderful scene! As you probably know (but maybe the West Wing scriptwriters didn't), the shorthand name for 'The Pirates of Penzance' is 'Pirates', not 'Penzance'. But of course it was from 'Pinafore'.

For another clip of Andrew Jones, search on TH-cam, The Magic Flute: Papageno Papagena duet - Opera Australia 2012.
Kateandphoebe: the staging was fabulous! Dressed as real birds, they strutted and flirted the way birds do. The version on TH-cam changed to one without numerous adorable fledgelings.
The lyrics at the final part are not quite correct, must of the cast are not singin "for in spite of all temptetions,,," but "for he himself has said it...". Any ways, i'm really glad for yu to upload this, it really is a great song!

Fun fact! In the film version of Pinafore, after the singer says "Italian," he says "mama Mia" in a hilariously high-pitched voice. One of the funniest parts of the opera as a whole
Yes, it was Opera Australia - who are based at the SOH - but this particular performance was recorded at the State Theatre, Arts Centre, Melbourne, in 2005. (And I was sitting in the front row.)
@DonarVanHolland I'm proud of the fact that we fought against the Germans. We did the right thing, even if we lost the Empire. Besides, the Empire has become the Commonwealth - a democratic family of nations, comprising over 2 billion people around the globe!
Wildly popular at the time. In the US, it had many unauthorized productions, so many that Pirates was first produced in the US in order to preserve the copyright (with a one-off rump production in Britain to preserve the copyright there).
By Englishman I think they mean all people that could enjoy 'the rights of Englishmen,' which included fair trials, security etc. These rights were extended to all citizens in the UK, and perhaps some commonwealth countries too I'm not sure.
I think the use of the English flag would be a thing of the past; like us we could use the Union Jack but always use the Australian flag. Anyway I've only seen the UK flag in all the plays of this tune, all made in the UK (or England?)
Ever since I saw this on the Simpsons, I always expect them to sing the high note at the end on Eng-LISH-man...

Kind of disappointing actually
