So tips from an autobody tech. That didn’t fix anything lmao it just covered it up. Next summer it’s gonna be back and worse. On the inside of the mettle it’s still rusted it’s still gonna spread and where u put the filler on the quarter panel on the whole. That will fall out in the next week To do it right u would’ve had to cut out all the rust and about 3inches further than u can see on the outside and weld a sheet back where u cut out But to make it look better than it does now. U are gonna wanna sand it waaay down more and go to the closest Honda dealer near u and ask for the paint code of your car in an aerosol can so u will be spraying the same color to match your car and ask for the matching clear coat. Just some tips
Came here to comment the exact same thing, no hate on you man I know you’re just trying to save some money and do it yourself but that cheese is going to blister in a couple days to a couple weeks at MOST. Filler will not stick to rust and the moisture still trapped in there will come back through quickly. In the future save the money toward getting a shop to repair it properly.
Its way easier and cheaper to just buy a new panel(depending where the rust is and the car) and have it painted, or paint it yourself.. I was quoted like $1200 to fix up some similar rust spots that needed to be cut out and welded.. And he told me that was a low-end estimate lol
Yes, the right way to do it would’ve been cut the whole weakened piece out and weld a new sheet in that area. I do want to get the proper paint code though, so I can clear up the imperfections. For no power tools or experience, I’m happy
@@TheGerbsteve quite honestly the best move would be to buy a new or Used quarter panel and paint it yourself. I think new is $700 and used without rust is $200.. u could easily paint it yourself, it's all about the prep and sanding process. If the paint n clear is just laid down decent, u can fix runs and orange peel quite easily.
Props to you for trying to solve a problem yourself without much knowledge nor tools, but for anyone watching this video, bare in mind that he didn't cure the problem, he just covered it. You could see all the rust inside that whole and even on the back. That rust will come up soon and will get deeper causing a way bigger problem.
Take the filler out, and primer it and leave the holes open, so moisture doesn’t get stuck in there with the filler, then have a shop weld in new sheet metal.. please do this before you need a 10” patch panel or a new rocker. Civic is looking nice over all!!
A lot of FA/FG’s that are daily’d up here in VT don’t stand a chance. The clearcoat fade doesn’t get to em quite as bad unless they’ve come from down south or the midwest, but the rockers take it the worst here so far that I’ve seen. They just bubble and splinter like yours did and it’s game ova! I highly recommend a couple different products to look in to for rustproofing/prevention or correction; Noxudol which is a European product that Toyota uses for their frame campaigns, and POR-15. Have had excellent results with both over the years. On my winter beater corolla I did the same thing you did, only I used wax paper to hold the shortstrand against the body to really fill in the small holes in both side doglegs. So that’s a trick you can use that will allow for a smoother more flush final product. Ultimately cutting out and welding in new panels is the way to go. But not bad for your first time DIY rust repair Gerb. We all gotta start somewhere!! I’m gonna have to say I def recommend you get metal work done before paint. A lot of shops, even the Maaco in my area (well kinda far I’m pretty rural) will usually refuse to paint a vehicle if it has extensive rust damage or previous repairs that have gone rusty again. Just don’t wanna see you waste $ on paint job if it’s not gonna hold up ya know?
I can only imagine! Vermont winters and roads are pretty shot, at least the ones I’ve seen. I need a beater Corolla or another civic because I refuse to drive mine in the winter time. I plan on fixing the upper, uneven quarter panel this weekend with proper paint match. Appreciate that, I think I did alright…. I may get it properly welded sometime early next year before I paint the whole car, ya know. I appreciate the response and Info man, thank you 🙏🏼
Yeah rust will reappear in 2 year or less on your rocker pannel. Mine on my 09 tsx is all rusted and needs to be cut and welded to a metal sheet but to that point, that's a rocker pannel conplete rebuild .... I'll just buff everything, apply some por15 and get myself some side lips from MV Tuning and hide the cut rocker pannel XD good job tho
Oh yes those rear wheel wells like to rust. I did the same thing over the spring as they were showing early signs of rust at the part were the rocker turns 90 degrees into the wheel well. Next time you should put the car on jack stands and remove the wheels so you got some leverage. And then use self etching primer since you are working with bare metal, then use automotive primer.
@@TheGerbsteve currently because of the help of you and other TH-cam videos here and there I dropped the transmission on my 06 si had a broken shift fork and 3-4 gear gone got that fixed now I’m about to put the trans back and change axles and tie rod and just install new stage 1 clutch and flywheel with the help of your video hoping to put the trans back this week
Shit looks like mine did I used the rust disolver aswell and ended up cutting out the visible rust bc there was alot of rust that spread through the rocker on the inside this should hold ya for a couple years

Who can weld properly. It's an art to weld and sand it down good. If you dont keep the car for more than 3 years, body filler, will do okay.

One video ive needed for the past year
Good job Gerb. Looking forward to that next vid sooner than later!
these old 8th gens will have have us become a mechanic one day and an autobody tech the next lol
Oh yes ;)
Haha 100 percent
Currently being the mechanic rn 😭😭

The homie gerb
You the homie
The New England curse is real!!
I have rust in the exact same spots on my 2008 SI coupe. Wondering how much a body shop will charge..
Did you ever find out by chance??
Whats up jb weld is good for filling holes and then bondo for second cost
Ebay bro just enter your paint code get your paint they match pretty darn exact
Not a bad idea
If your ever in the az area I'd love to meet you your channel is so upbeat.
My old 8th gen had the rust issue in the same place!
Must be a common spot ! 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
@@TheGerbsteve Ah definitely is! Ig the water build up after driving in the rain must rust it up from the inside
this is it. this is good content. let’s gooo
I appreciate that man
I dont live in an area where rust we be an issue yet ugh scraping being lowered has caused side areas to rust a bit since i got a deep gash🤦♂️
I just found more rust bubbles on my passenger side 😢
Should of went to O'Reilly's and got the OEM nighthawk black pearl paint from there in a can
That's what I'm planing on doing this week to my 05 tsx...only paint repair though.
Didn't even know they had it... I'll be checking into that
@@TheGerbsteve yup they have small can of Honda paint they should have at least two cans of nighthawk black pearl
Good Job bro!!!
Shit looks like mine did I used the rust disolver aswell and ended up cutting out the visible rust bc there was alot of rust that spread through the rocker on the inside this should hold ya for a couple years
I was hoping the same thing for a quick, little fix.

Salt more then anything
You in ct first time watching and heard you say Torrington
I may just be
I have a lil rust spot in that exact same spot on mine the road salt and rocks from the NY winters is horrible for the paint. 🥲
That rust will come back with a vengeance 😔
It was worth a shot
You are the man 👌🏼 like always bro cool video
I appreciate that!
Was that bondo glass or body filler.? Gotta do the same to my civic lol 🙁
Body filler. You got this 💪🏼
how did you get your front honda badge blacked out like that?
Because my jdm red one fell off haha
@@TheGerbsteve where did you buy the red JDM badges?
Good stuffff.
Hey Greg how’s it holding up?
Gerb***
It's still holding actually
Repainting it the same color or going a different route?
It'd be the same Nighthawk black pearl
Can’t wait for the fun runs!
Have you tried to find some oem side hfp skirts?
Tried to.. they’re hard to find
Hey I’m a fellow 8th gen si coupe owner and I wanted to ask what are the specs on your wheels? I want to get a similar set up
17x8+35 offset
Get a palm sander and finishing putty.
If your fingers feel the imperfections your eyes will most definitely see them
Great job. Once it's painted a non-issue... :-)
Thank you sir. I agree
Nice video, man.. 5 months in lol
How’d it hold up?
Cheers 🍻
Still holding great 🤙🏼🤙🏼
@@TheGerbsteve Really, that’s great! Going to do this on my own thanks to your video
How’s your civic treating you after all this time? 💁🏽♀️
Great, going to make a video explaining this soon
I gotta do the same thing to mine
Good job buddy, lmk when you ready for a pull.
I have the 2012 civic si 2.4 vtec
Deer killed the front of my 8th gen last night :(
Dude, that blows. Sorry to hear the news
Wrap it a crazy color
Not bad dude a little more practice and that would look pretty nice. You can probably buff it and retouch it as well to make it cleaner
I'm most likely going to re-sand it and get the right paint code like others recommended.
Bro please invest in a sanding block or something man I love watching your content but I can’t deal with this and you should have dropped the bumper corner or something
free weight reduction
Right haha
Chop it off and throw on a side skirt to hide it lmao
Tempting haha
Bubby I wish I can show you how to do body work. I’m sorry but I can do way better than that you need to learn how to sand and grade the meral
