    yep, that weird 4 connector battery is for the 2 extra terminals on the mains unit, they connect to a separate switch pole in the radio and switch the transformer out in the mains unit when off, but cant remember if they switch the mains itself or the secondary side.....

    I worked for radio rentals warehouse service which was called Thorn homeserve then Granada came in and Thorn became Endeva and all the Radio rentals shops were renamed box clever.

      Boxclever seem to have absorbed a lot of the old rental brands, and apparently are still going!

    Perhaps the rental model still makes some sense given that TVs last 1 to 5 years now!!!! Well maybe not as they are chuck away prices but plasma and OLED sets were never cheap.

    That radio has a certain look that makes me think it would have looked old fashioned whatever year it was made!

    The tuning scale looks very similar to that of bush vhf 81.
    The push changewave buttons also look very bush!

      Yes I can see the similarity. I'm not sure to whom Baird/RR contracted the building of their sets in the 1960s but I suppose it could have been part of the Bush empire (though the 81 was a valve set I think?)

      @@neilsradios Yes thats correct the bush vhf81 is valve. Radio rentals did use thorn for their tv sets, but things could of varied.
      The pcb in this radio does look like part of the bush rank organisation. I have 2 bush srg 100 stereograms from 1964 which are hybrid valve/transistor. The transistor pcb side looks very similar to the one in this set especialy the IF coils. Very interesting baird!

    If it was mine, i would whip up a mains power supply with a transformer and bits, a lm317T is very handy :-D Or jack up a common regulator. nasty lol.

    Why not replace or at least check the electrolytic capacitors, they even look bad?

    • @neilsradios
      @neilsradios  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I find the blue metal case ones are generally quite reliable and I don't usually replace them unless there is an apparent problem. I did replace one of them (the big blue one at 20:05 which I thought showed a bit of swelling and might be causing the audio problems) but having taken it out it tested OK. The red Elco electrolytics (which aren't used in this set) are usually in poor condition so if it had those I would probably have replaced them.
