What a perfect timing for this video! I am about to start my MPhil in international studies, and I am trying to get a head start on my thesis. I’m thinking about applying ECA to look at the localization of digital content by embassies in various host countries’. I am looking at whether they adjust content to fit the local culture (such as cultural context or language). I think ECA might be perfect for this, but I am still reading up on methodologies in case I might find something more fitting. :)

      Thank you for your comment!
Your research topic on the localisation of digital content by embassies sounds fascinating!
ECA could indeed be a great fit for analysing how content is adapted to different cultural contexts, as it allows you to explore both the manifest and latent meanings within the content.
It's great that you're keeping an open mind while reading up on other methodologies-making sure your method aligns perfectly with your research questions is key.
Wishing you the best of luck with your MPhil thesis, and I’m glad the video came at the right time!

Might read up on ECA after watching this vid as it seems to be helpful with what I want to do in my research project. Thanks!

I am studying how tribal communities of India respond to acquisition of their lands for development projects. I am considering ECA. I want to ask if it is possible to combine thematic analysis & ECA. Can I have a separate ethnographic chapter in my study?

Thank you for your comment and for sharing your interesting research topic!
It's great that you're considering using Ethnographic Content Analysis (ECA) in your study on how tribal communities in India respond to land acquisition for development projects. Combining ECA with thematic analysis can be a powerful approach, as it allows you to analyse both the content and context of your data, providing a deeper understanding of the responses and experiences of the communities.
Here are a few tips that might help...
      Combining ECA and Thematic Analysis:
ECA focuses on both the content and the context, making it suitable for analyzing documents, media, and other textual data that reflect the lived experiences and cultural contexts of the communities.Thematic Analysis: Allows you to identify, analyse, and report patterns (themes) within your data. This can be useful for capturing the broader themes and issues that emerge from your ethnographic data.
By combining these methods, you can use thematic analysis to identify overarching themes and ECA to explore the cultural and contextual nuances within these themes.
      Separate Ethnographic Chapter:
Including a separate ethnographic chapter can be very beneficial. This chapter can provide a rich, detailed account of your fieldwork, observations, and interactions with the communities. It can serve as a foundation for the subsequent thematic and ECA analysis chapters, offering readers an immersive understanding of the context and setting.
Ultimately, it’s important to consult your supervisor about your methodological approach. They can provide valuable insights and ensure that your chosen methods align with your research objectives and academic standards.
I hope these tips are helpful! Good luck with your research, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions.
