    Nobody really ever talks about the beautiful Saint Charles. I drive through downtown every day on the way to school. If you go into the public library, you can see some of the old newspapers back from the 1920’s! It means a lot as someone from Saint Charles to see something like this. 😂

    Grew up here.. Still here... Arcada was a movie theater for a long time.. Before the movie started a piano and player would raise up from the ground in front of the screen and do a pre movie song or two... Also saw the original Ghostbusters movie and lightning hit the theater during the movie.... Crazy..

    Do Elgin! Downtown, the tower, casket factory, the armory, President Kennedy, the castle, the observatory, the watch factory, oldest cobblestone house, Elgins own currency, the mental health institute...You didn't discuss all the underground tunnels in St. Charles.

    • @kittymcmeowmeow1
      @kittymcmeowmeow1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My parents used to own the casket factory in elgin! The whole building is incredibly creepy, we used to always joke that the haunted house that currently rents out space there could make more money by dropping people off deep in the building with a flashlight.

    • @kittymcmeowmeow1
      @kittymcmeowmeow1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They owned the building after it was a factory, some of it is used for office space now, as well as a haunted house and a cabinet/wood carving facility. A large majority of it is empty though, and probably will stay that way until the building is eventually knocked down

    • @kittymcmeowmeow1
      @kittymcmeowmeow1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do remember walking through a room that was still set up as a casket showroom though, and I believe they had left some sort of framed certificate about how they had built one of the coffins for JFK, this was probably 10+ years ago though

    If you want to go to a historical site: you should go to Old Abilene Town in Abilene, Kansas. Almost all of the historical restaurants, houses, and stores are in very good conditions and most of them are still up and running. There's even an old school that you can go look at. If you go to the historical Society there they have an old log cabin house you can go to, and the historical Society itself is FULL of amazing things. You can also take a tour of Dwight D. Eisenhower's childhood home.

    This is a neat series, dude. I'd really like to see where you go and how this series will development. I'd suggest seeing if you can get in touch with some historians from the towns you visit. Talk about the significance of the town and such.
    Also, a side note not really about the video, but I'd recommend looking into Open House Chicago. It's done every year in October and they open up a ton of buildings to the public all around Chicago, Oak Park and Evanston. I think you might really enjoy it. You can talk to me more about it if you want.

Another good idea: local historian to walk a little with you to explain the local history in relation to what you are doing. This would make this series definitely more interesting because the videography is great and you seem to know your stuff.

    • @chooch1995
      @chooch1995 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually - the runaway train { there were several, but only one made it onto Main Street } ran behind the old city building & continued south to where the Municipal building sits today and then crossed main street, blocking the trolley tracks & crashing into the storefronts near where 'Smitty's on the Corner' is now. It was a Chicago Great Western steam engine which came down off the mainline { where the old Fox River rail bridge is today } on a spur track which was very steep. This bit of a roller coaster track required good brakes to negotiate & several trains got away, causing the crash you described!

    Something about St. Charles you missed { in fact most of St. Charles current residents probably don't realize } is the huge connection to Texaco.....or should I say Texaco money! Nearby DeKalb became the barbed wire capital of the world { their high school team is still called the 'Barbs' to this day } and offered many opportunities for employment. A man named John Warne Gates { later nicknamed 'Bet-a-Million' Gates } was a sales rep & Texas was his territory. He was very good at his job & made good money which he used to start investments on the side - one of which was oil speculation. Well, he 'speculated' well & hit a gusher! A new business was formed - The Texas Company - aka 'Texaco'. Other business ventures were the steel industry & railroads. Gates died in Paris in 1911 leaving a fortune of around $40-50 million to his niece Dellora Angell Norris & his nephew Edward Baker, both from St. Charles. These two left a lasting legacy with gifts to the city, some of which you just visited such as the Arcada Theater, the Hotel Baker & the old St. Charles National Bank, to name but a few. Great video - you merely scratched the surface here, as far as history is concerned - do another one! Lots of subject matter remains! BTW - the 'Rocket Fizz' building was never a blacksmith shop....it's merely the location of a former blacksmith shop. The 'Rocket Fizz' building was built as a market. In 1943, the second 'version' of the Blue Goose supermarket moved in & stayed until a newer location opened up along the river & Illinois Ave. in 1963.....
