Outstanding, sir. I had family who lived in Bandera back in the mid-1800s. I have a few old family stories from them. I lived in San Anton for many years. Originally born out in West Texas. Live in Old Town Spring Texas now. Good history.
Randomly watching this well-done video, kept thinking the narrator, Roy, looked like an actor, a Westerns actor (mostly), and specifically a retired Gary Cooper. Have to come see this beautiful town when visiting relatives in Austin and San Antone.
My wife and I were married at the courthouse in Bandera, Texas by Judge Vander Zee back in 1981, after knowing her for six days I asked her to marry me. Judge Zee didn't want me to take such a big step after only six days, well it's 42 years later and the only problem I have with my wife is her terrible taste in men. It's been a heckava hellava wonderful ride and I wouldn't change a thing.
Bandera holds a special place in my life. As a very young child the family journeyed to Joleta often. One of the wranglers even gave my my first pair of spurs. Probably 5 or 6 at the time. Later, at Baylor, Charmin Hicks became a dear friend. Her family ranched there and I believe her brother Dickie? went to A & M. Even have a couple of pictures of Joleta, back in the day.
At 0:45 in is my 3rd great grandfather George Hay. His daughter Georgiana married my 2nd Great grandfather Lee Risinger who had a general store on Main Street till the 1915. Now what remains of the building is located next store to the right of the current general store. My Ancestors from Bandera surnames of Hay, Risinger, Lewis, Minear, and Wright.
Ditto... I actually have that photo of Judge George Hay, and my Hay ancestors are buried in the Bandera cemetery, including my parents. I remember the huge Hay family reunions at great aunt and uncle's house back in the 70s, then it moved to Mansfield Park in the 80s. Hay, Minear, Fortson.
We're from TX but live in CA now where hubby retired from his job. He's told us stories about his high school trip to a Bandera dude ranch when he was a Sr at Killeen HS.

Back in the seventies I wore out a mini of boot Souls at the Cabaret in Bandera it is too bad that it burnt down wish they would have rebuild it. It was a 80 mile round trip for me but I really enjoyed it. One of the main guys that played there all the time was Johnny Bush. I also used to stop in the silver dollar and have a drink once in awhile, I have not been in the silver dollar in 40 years, but of course I quit drinking 30 years ago but it will still be nice to visit.
I worked in that area in the early 70's and stayed in Bandera because none of the other small towns had a motel. The only thing I didn't like was that there were no restaurants in Bandera then and the only place to eat was small hamburger joint that closed at 6pm. I got tired of hamburgers so I went to one of the old bars on the main street to drink a beer and ask it they knew anywhere close by to eat. Turns out they had T-bone steaks with a baked potato and salad. I ate there every day from then on. They had probably the best T-bone steaks I have ever eaten!
This guy is mistaken, the Spanish word "Bandera" did NOT come from the word "Bandana". Bandera Spanish and it means "Flag" and back in the days of the Spanish and Indians/Native Americans no one used the word "Bandana". What Americans called a "handkerchief" or "neckerchief" in those days, the Spanish called it a "pañuelo" and they still do to this day. Besides that, Bandanas or bandannas originated in India, and though the word bandana nowadays is commonly used instead of handkerchief or neckerchief, the fact remains, "bandana" stems from the Hindi words 'bāndhnū,' or "tie-dyeing," and 'bāndhnā,' "to tie." Spaniards would have said pañuelo NOT bandana. The town of "Bandera" TX got it's name from boundary "flags" the Spanish posted. Our common day "Bandana:" has nothing to do with the name. Nice story though.
I am surprised that he didn't mention Arkie Blue's Bar. I like the ambiance of Bandera. It's a fun place to go. I wish the horse race track was still operating.

Burger King? I miss Zekes Hamburgers, the Purple Cow and the Cabaret. We'd made the drive over from Utopia to party in Bandera and somehow, it might not be until morning though, we'd make the drive back over the hills to the Sabinal Canyon all in one piece. Bandera is timeless for the most part.

Bandera actually means flag in Polish as well. There were Spanish settlers and Polish settlers there and the word “Bandera” had a flag meaning in both languages. Bandanna is derived from the root word “Bandera”. I’m not sure about the truce struck with Native Americans though but I tend to lean towards believing the story. Also, why did you post a Mexican flag emoji? I’m not sure what you are trying to convey with that message. At one time Texas was part of Mexico so maybe that’s the reason… Best wishes friend.
