Five years later he becomes All Black captain. Fourteen years later he retires after 148 test caps and the reputation as the greatest All Black of all time.
Richie Macaw is on my list of the greatest achievers during my lifetime. That list includes Neil Armstrong, Pink Floyd, Nelson Mandela plus some others too many to mention here.
Heres a guy who hit the ground running first test only 8 minutes of Super rugby under his belt. Man of the match in a very difficult assignemnt in Ireland 148 tests later 131 wins in total . Legend
Exactly - it was his knowledge of the laws. So the armchair players and commentators wasted years whining about his "cheating". They still do - just read, and laugh out loud at many of the comments on the various McCaw videos on TH-cam.
Only a true legend is chosen as man of the match in theyre first ever international match. And that match was against Keith Wood`s ireland in a year keith wood played exceptionally well. Greatest rugby player EVER, true sportsman and ambassador of the game.
I was lucky to play with Ritchie when we were kids .kurow had a beast team .ritchie has always been the man.loved watching your career Ritchie u da man ....
@@MarsFKA Not that I know of..... lol. For me, the issue was not so much that Kronfeld had an opinion, but that as the recent incumbent, he was way out of line to bag a guy who simply made himself available for selection.
@@beburger2054 Honestly 2019 McCaw would have still made an impact in that came even coming off playing nothing. He's as fit as ever but down on muscle bulk doing these big multi day giant cross country multi sport races.
International debut Although the then 20-year-old McCaw had only played seventeen matches for Canterbury, John Mitchell, the new All Black coach, selected him for the 2001 end of year tour to Ireland, Scotland and Argentina. This led Josh Kronfeld, a former All Black openside flanker, to criticise the selection: "You might as well just give All Black jerseys to everybody. The fact they picked guys off one NPC season is bloody incredible".[13] en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richie_McCaw
I was in the old north terrace for that match, ireland were all over the all blacks and then shane horgan had to go off. After that lomu had free reign and ran out comfortable winners. Had horgan not got injured ireland would have won
Yes a one hit wonder from the Sth Island of NZ. I am so glad that he was never picked again for the All Blacks. They reckoned he was gonna be a star, you'd want to be better than that to begin with.
This Richard McCann looks promising but did give away a couple penalties at the breakdown. I'm sure he'll develop into a great player if he can stay on the right side of the referee.
Current Affairs There is a difference between being a cheater and being clever He was the most intelligent man to ever play the game. Always aware of the rules and where the ref was standing on the pitch.
Phil Waugh stated when McCaw retired that McCaw was not a cheat, he was just doing the job of a number 7, which is in part to play to the boundaries of the rules. Waugh rated McCaw as the best, and he would know a lot more about openside play than anyone that has commented here. McCaw also was often penalised when he had done nothing wrong, often due to his speed and understanding of the rules. E.g. the last penalty of the 2014 Super Rugby final.
Dan Carter, Michael Jones and that guy Cronfield or who ever his name is. They are all better then Richie. Richie is the most cheating number 7 I have ever seen in rugby.
I feel sorry for your children. Telling them that Richie was a great player instead of telling them that Richie was the best cheater of the game. Videos don't lie. Richie gets away with more penalties then any other player.
Dusty Reason You didn't mention that he also cheated his way to consecutive World Cup victories. By the way, are you at all related to the late John Reason, rugby writer for the Telegraph? He didn't have a lot to say about New Zealand rugby that was complimentary.

And he played every single game that solid. All 148 of them. Never had a bad game. Just some were better than others.

And two World Cups.
The way he pinched the ball at 2:20 !!! The perfect fetcher. He had so many other qualities, but his timing and anticipation were second to none.
After the game, Richie McCan disappeared and was never heard from again.
LOLing! He changed his name by deed poll. The rest is history.
jydaflyest haha
His understanding of the laws over the years he was active was impeccable.
Nathan Daly ahead of his time. Definitely a pioneer in rugby!

Off the back of the scrum at 2:14 that is freakish how fast he gets to the breakdown.
Nelson Sweatyballs JESUS HE IS FAST

I would've gladly made a video out of his debut performance if I had the skills required for it but glad someone uploaded it now. Good video dude.

All Seating Stadiums ruined it...

That Richie McCan was really good. Never saw him again after this. Strange.
Ah" McCan youve done it aga Lol. We all breathed a sigh of relief and got to touch some ball when king Richie retired.

prac2 Yep and the funny thing is Josh Kronfeld strongly criticised his selection....... said something about giving All Black jerseys away lol!!

If ever there was a Legend in Sport it has to be Richie and closely followed by Dan.
The AB’s sorely missed him and Dan in this years WC.

And he just continued to get better
As ever, Richie doing the work of 2 men.
