I used this in my DND campaign, against former friends and lovers who both became gods on the opposite sides of a War. There was not a dry eye in my group as they clashed blade with magic.

Party is going to have a similar thing happen in the future. One party member became God of the far relm and drove the party member with the most destructive potential to madness, causing alot of death. They are now both trying and failing 2 kill the other but by the end one of them will die

Austrius once was a mortal. When he was a mortal and hunting in the west, he once came across a phoenix trapped; some say it was a cage, the humans say he caught it in a net, the elves claim it was a fallen tree, the exact details have been forgotten by time, but let us amuse the elves and tell their version. When Austrius came across the bird said “I am not just any bird, I have the magical ability to grant you anything you desire in exchange for your help”. Intrigued by this offer, he decided to take this off. “Then I wish for the ability to harness chaos and use my new found powers to free you.” After hearing his wish the phoenix replied “Your wish is my command but understand that chaos is not an easy thing to control” and thus the first wild mage was born. Austrius then cast the first spell cast by a mortal, levitate, and the bird flew to the east.
The young man was pleased with his new skill, chucking balls of fire at trees and turning stone to gold. However when he saw a frog die of old age he began to think about his life and how fragile it is. So Austrius headed east in search of the phoenix and eventually he found it bathing in a pond. Cleverly the mage disguised himself as a young maiden and he sneakily rolled a boulder onto the bird. The bird did not die, for phoenixes can only die when they burst into flames in order to be renewed, but the boulder did break the phoenix’s wing thus trapping it in the water. Flapping desperately with all its vigor the bird managed to shout to Austrius “Young lady help me get out of this water and I will grant you anything you desire, for you see I am a magical creature.” Austrius then jumped into the pond and carried the wet phoenix to the shore. With much gratitude the bird said “Oh thank you so much I thought I would …” But before he could finish his sentence Austrius said “ I want to be eternally young and never age.” Taken back by such rudeness the bird replied “ Your wish is my command but understand that I would never be able to fully heal my wing in exchange” Unempathetically, he then replied “I understand that but I did save your life.” Sadly the phoenix replied “True, and I did promise you anything you desired.” After granting his wish the bird then flew, but not as graceful as he once did, to the south.
Forty years went by and Austrius still was a young man. He would show off in villages his magical ability and he would swoon all the maidens in the land. However when the day was over, Austrius was still just a commoner and had no land to call his own. One day while sitting in a tavern Austrius heard of a crippled phoenix living in the southernmost point of the world. Austrius soon decides to travel south to go and capture the bird. Far and wide Austrius traveled but he eventually found the bird living in a burrow in the most remote land. Austrius then proceeded to trap the phoenix by molding the earth and trapping the animal. “Help! Help!” it cawed “Any creature that saves me from my prison shall be granted any treasure it desires!” Austrius proceeds to free the bird and says "I wish to be king of a prosperous kingdom and for it to be powerful too.” Suspicious of Austrius the phoenix then replied “travel ten miles south and you will come to your capital and will be greeted as king, but be weary you will someday lose your kingdom.” Austrius then replied “Try to take my kingdom it would be the most powerful in the world, matching its ruler the most powerful mortal in the world.” The phoenix then proceeded to fly north; grumbling and covered in dirt.
The King ruled his land for over many and many generations but eventually a civil war broke out that destroyed the kingdom, leaving Austrius a king of rubble and injured with wounds. Furious at the phoenix and shocked at the realization that he truly is still mortal, Austrius used the last of his great empire’s wealth to find the phoenix secluded in the mountains way up north. On a perch where land, sea, and sky collide Austrius found the phoenix lying in a nest finally at rest. Unfortunately the fallen king disturbed the fowl’s rest and he pinned the bird down and demanded “I want another wish and in exchange I will free you and forever leave you be.”
The phoenix resisted and resisted, he tried to burst into flames but Austrius would still hold on despite his arms burning. Finally the bird shouted “FINE! I weld! What do you want!” He then replied “ when my kingdom collapsed I saw many men and women die, I actually bled for the first time in many scores… I want you to make me immortal where I never die, make me a god.” The phoenix laugh maniacally “Make you a GOD? Fine, but as punishment for tricking, crippling, trapping me in my own home, and disturbing me in my final resting place you will only be immortal as long as there are mortals to worship you. You are now in charge of keeping them alive. And once the last mortal dies *poof* all your gifts would disappear. All the spells you ever cast will reverse back onto you, all your years will rapidly catch up to you, and all your slaughtered enemies’ pain shall be inflicted onto your temples; leaving you in a constant state of agony.” And with the last word ever spoken by the phoenix the bird turned into ash and Austrius was then yanked into the heavens; for the mortal realm was no place for a god. And he has been fruitlessly preventing the end of our kind ever since.

Immortality requires u to not age and be the strongest ever that all
depends on the type of immortality. True immortality would be much like being in a video game. You would die but respawn in a safe area away from enemies. You dont age or need to eat, sleep or drink due to the video game like physiology.
With your type of immortality it's different. there is still a chance of dying there simply needs to be enough time for someone stronger to surface or one lucky shot that is able to kill the immortal.
