Todays video is all about reading your Humminbirds Side Imaging, Down Imaging and Sonar. I talk about what kind of summer spots I look for and how I drive around those areas looking for fish. Using your electronics is key to consistently catching walleyes all season long. Knowing when to use side imaging, down imaging and sonar will help tremendously. Another top notch video, Tom. Love these "tech-heavy" videos, with lots of screenshots from multiple views. These are by far the most informative videos on the internet. Please continue to produce these excellent learning tools.
Tom I hate the dirt to. Get a small container, coffee can, mayo jar something you can fit your hand in. Anyway put a little water in the container and throw a few crawlers in. Clean crawlers every time

Add ice, and time (like overnight), and not only is there no dirt, the crawlers become tightened and toughened up - not limp linguini noodles!
Oh yeah, WAL aren't as common as panfish in my home lake, plus WAL are (for me, at this stage of my learning curve) not always very receptive either.
i also enjoy catching a wide variety of fish, and after almost 60yrs, their size is no longer what it's all about. i've caught no few trophies before, am not apt to set any new PB's, and so just relaxing and enjoying the total experience with likeminded vets (and beginners, with tugs mord often) matters more. So, unless i'm bent on hosting a group for a walleye dinner, i might be more content aiming at a C&R mixed bag.
Coming from a fly fishing focus, and before that an artificials-only, basser background, i'm not keen on buying, keeping, and using live baits. i prefer my offerings to be 100% guaranteed 'pre-dead'! i'd prefer not resortinv to GulpAlive! or even adding a scent product.
But i get it; the WAL world is just NOT ever going to be my oyster. It's a bigger (better???) challenge to master. There's a good reason why in a WAL tourney setting...
(not that those contests attract me),
....live bait use is standard operating procedure, whereas in bass tourneys it's strictly articials-only. "Bass wete created for folks who can't catch WAL (in the daytime, at least with any consistency)", has some truth to it. It's the nature of these two species. They are what they were created to be, period.
Bass are more aggresive; more instinctively triggerable, and rarely glued to bottom, heads stuck under cover, basically 'comatose' until dusk! Just go to the fish tank in a big box outdoors store, and look for the fish species that appears totally 'out of it', if not 'sick'. It's always a Walter, eh?
In top of that, my lake's fish are all flat-out fussy most of the time...
( no excuse, DCK earns its nickname of 'The Rekuctant Dragon'),
... and never moreso than in summer. She CAN be generous at other seasons; the fish ARE there, but in most days a limit catch raises some eyelids. Even/ espesh the BGL are quite persnickity! As ab ex fish biologist, directky ir indirectly, this distinction in difficulty almost certainly has something ti do with the hyper-abundant zooplankton population, and the fact that as a popular recreational poweboating lake, well... a lot of folks just avoid the 'loved2death zoo' whenever school is out of session. The crosswakes of craft dragging folks on tubes and wakeboards is so intense, even the waterskiers avoid it for most of the day!
Sure i'd rather jig or plug-up a WAL, but ever since it was created 100ya, it's been pretty obvious around here that 'snobby' elites (i jest there) can expect a lot more slow days, and FAR fewer fish brought to hand.
All that, just to say this tidbit i learned by accident: wann'a avoid getting dirt in the bottom of your boat? However you might prep your crawlers, if in the interest of just getting bit, you are choosing to use LESS THAN a whole crawler, instead of using your hands, try grabbing the bugger in your hemostats, its jaws locked. That done, Squiggly is going nowhere.
Now give it a quick dip or swish in the lake. BOOM! All the clingy dirt is now history. There may (if you didn't purge them first in an icewater bath) still be dirt throughout Wormwood's alimentary canal, but at least half of it is sealed off, you now onky need ONE hand to pinch or cut the tail end off (first), and there's a LOT less mess or fuss. If any, the worm 'goo' is only under two fingernails, so go ahead and touch your sounder screen/buttons, eat that snack, use your phone/cam...
(or pick your nose, ha2),
... with the OTHER hand, , and if a germophobe, do it all, sans souci!
Your mileage may vary. i'm not squeemish at all, but the old flyguy in me gets a teensy kick out off this every time, which offsets all those dink panfish pecking that half worm off the hook in half a blink.
A couple of other related things?
A healthy, vigorous, but be-tailed half crawler becomes the hardest of the dozen to find crawler, if put back in the container of dirt, where it once again gets dirty (duh). Spare yourself those two hassles by dropping the head end in another, smaller, shallow container, like a maggot or waxie container.
i've not tried it yet, but if i stuck it in a larger diameter bait puck, who know? Maybe some of the remaining, whole crawlers will actually stay cleaner and easy to get, on top of the dirt?
Finally, to wrap up this tome about minutia, guess what? Compared to a crawler pulled apart with bare hands, a leftover head end heals up! Or, you can always settle for it croaking, rotting, maybe killing the rest of your bait, and having your own better half comolaining that you've gone and stunk up her 'frig.
TomB probably doesn't face that last problem, not with 'S', anyway?
So then, yeah... avoid getting and then spreading crawler dirt all over your boat.

Yeah, you bought your little screen all right, but yoy don't own what you may find on it. Your ISO isn't charging you by the word, are they? So swipe, don't complain - which really says more about you, than about me. Spare yourself! Besides, NObody else cares, or likes a whiner.
i din't mind getting cyberlLikes, but don't need them. It's often easier, i can do it at will, it's mental exercise, and i like composing about fishing, almost as much as i do getting bit.

Excellent tutorial. I'm a Lowrance guy and am really good with my electronics so you pretty much reinforced my thought process. All the concepts are the same regardless of brand. I do find it hard to pick out fish to the side if there is a lot of rock or stumps & woody debris. So many bright spots and shadows to decipher. The Lowrance and C-Map combo has better depth coloring features which is really helpful.
I was still limiting out this past weekend. The slip bobber was working it’s magic .I was in St Germain area . The guys in the bait shop were in awe.

Was there any height you would place the bait above the pod of fish?
Like one foot, or two foot above... etc?
@@retiredboxingref7620 I had one line 6 inches and one a foot above the bottom. I was in the weed edge in about 7 to 8 fow. The water temps were around 75 degrees.. all the fish were between 16 and 19 inches. . Tom is the man .

Great detailed information as always. One request I have is if you could incorporate how you manage your way points. After fishing a lake a few times, I have spots marked that helped then, but I don't necessarily remember the validity of them and there gets to be an unmanageable cluster of points! Do you keep most or do you delete them each time? I'd appreciate any information.

I usually only used the waypoint markers for areas I've caught eyes trolling.

Tom to get rid of some of that dirt dump the box of crawlers into a round minnow bucket with a little water! Keeps them cool too works great I think... dump out most the dirt before you dump the box into the bucket and that drain it out a few times works wonders!

Tom thank you so much! I have been prospecting in my area and have been checking out the spots. Sonar, down imaging and side view. This confirms what i have been seeing with my new garmin echomap uhd 95 sv.
Tom, think about picking up a bag of buss bedding w/ food for keeping your worms. They store well if kept in a cool area. It's made of ground newspaper which is much cleaner than the dirt the worms come in. What falls in the boat mostly dries up and blows out. The rest is easy to vacuum. Maybe they'll sponsor you. Thanks for all your info and hard work you put in your videos. I spent many years going up to an inlaws cabin near Barnes. I wish I knew then what I know now!
Everytime I pull up on a cluster of marks like that I hook up! But they are sunnies, crappie, or even worse. SHEEPHEAD! Nice video Tom thanks

Thank you for what you do! You are Great. Can you tell me how you see your waypoints when you have sonar and down imaging on your screen?
Watch at beginning of video, at about the 1 minute mark... He has 3 units, linked with I Pilot. Basically uses one for Live,( not in use right now), one for maps, and 3rd for sonar/imaging. That makes things easy, especially when you can afford 3 of them.
If you only have 1 unit, I believe you can split the Helix screen into 4,3,2 views, kind of like picture-in-picture. It may be hard to see smaller details when you do, but you can have maps/GPS, sonar, down, and side imaging, all on 1 screen.
I'm about to but my 1st Helix Mega SI, so I haven't read that far into the manual yet, but do remember seeing it, in other videos and Hummingbird ads.

I am a lake / reservoir fisherman for walleye. However, I do some occasional fishing in the St-Lawrence River near Montréal. This fishing in medium to heavy current, I find extremely difficult. I do not have much success. Just the occasional walleye.
Your videos are the best I have seen so far. If you have some knowledge to share concerning fishing in rivers, I am sure someone like me would really appreciate.
