  • My plants in 2022 have all come a long way. But I figured they deserve a nice end-of-year celebration with a little houseplant award ceremony. These plants are some of the best and worst of 2022. This end of year plant collection tour is something that I think I'll start doing annually.
    It's so fun to be able to look back from the beginning of the year and see how far your plants have come. Each category will have 3 nominee plants that I felt fit into each category after deep diving into this year - But there will only be one winner. I will also dabble into some plant care tips for the winners along the way.
    What was YOUR plant of the year?

    Amanda: Very creative and original idea for a video! Thanks to your viewers for sharing! 😊 I have seen a huge improvement in almost all of my plants with the cooler weather. Trust me, our summer was not easy on my plants and many of them did poorly. I have more of them growing indoors now and several behind the protection of our large palm trees. My best come back plants: hoya carnosa, calathea ornata, some coleus varieties to name a few. Star of the show: calathea makayana for most consistent, healthiest and least work. Yes, I have a monstera deliciosa right at the front door which looks lovely. Happy new year and Aloha for now! 🪴

      Hi Michael! I’m so glad you loved this video 👏 a calathea as a comeback plant!? That’s impressive, not many people can say that 😅. I’m glad your plants are adjusting well indoors. Hopefully next summer your outdoor plants well do better - sounds like you have a good strategy. 😊🌿

      @@BotanicalBrunette Just a quick one here: I'm learning to keep my plants in shadier areas, also "cooler" temps here mean overnight low of 68 degrees vs. 81 degrees. This definitely helps! Aloha! 🪴

    My best comeback plant has got to be three little begonia Rex that I got at Lowe’s for .50 each. They were dried up and almost dead. Now the pot I put them in is overflowing! My best grower besides Hawaiian Pothos is peperomia Hope. I just love that funky plant.

    • @BotanicalBrunette
      @BotanicalBrunette  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is SO awesome! 👏👏 it’s such a reward when you can bring a plant back to life, never mind about making it thrive! Both the Hawaiian Pothos and the Peperomia Hope are such good plants! 👏🌿🤍

    I’m loving this video. I just paused half way through to say my philodendron brandi was also very difficult. I started with a full plant and have a 2 leaf cutting left.

    You have so many beautiful plants! They look so pristine in their white pots! My plant of the year is my philodendron verrucosum. Last year I rotted the mother plant and propagated the nodes. I can’t believe how gorgeous the leaves are!

    • @BotanicalBrunette
      @BotanicalBrunette  ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw thank you, Cheryl! Glad you were able to regrow your verrucosum back. I love how if you know a plant isn’t doing well you can (on most plants) take cuttings or what I like to call insurance policies. And they really do have gorgeous foliage! 😊👏🤍🌿

    My Plant of the year was Rhaphidophora tetrasperma. It grew like insane. It stopped growing in the winter but there is a growth point ready to explode whenever the time is right. I tried to propagate it in soil and it roted on me. Next time I'll try water. I also propagate hydrangeas in water. They looked bad but for my surprise after about two months there is some roots and some new leafs 🍃 trying to grow. I have them right on east facing window. I may try to grow it as house plant since I don't have good spot for it outside.

    • @BotanicalBrunette
      @BotanicalBrunette  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooo I love a good Rhaphi! They are super hard to propagate in soil, but do well in water. Mine have always rotted propagating in soil.

    • @aspirativemusicproduction2135
      @aspirativemusicproduction2135 ปีที่แล้ว

      @BotanicalBrunette I've never had a plant grow so fast it's only hard to get it started. I even bought a pot with new plants and most of them rotted despite I planted them in the same pot where the old plant was. I am still figuring out how to grow new plants. I want to be able to grow things other than cacti which I pretty much can grow in stones. Some volcanic stones and slow release fertilizer would do. I grow Haworthia in just leca. I have just a little bit of soul around the roots and the rest is just leca..Leca stays moist just enough for the succulents to pull out moisture and than dries out. That way I don't get root rot which is number one killer in my case. I live next to water and it gets very humid most of the year. It's funny how in this climate I am growing so many succulents. One would assume I would do better with jungle plants. And I will eventually if I get the mix right. Currently I grow them in mostly bark. Ever since I started using bark my plants survive much better. I just have to figure out how much bark to use on every individual plant.

    Hi Amanda, the plants that have brought me the most joy in 2022 would be my Alocasia Cuprea, Alocasia Frydek, Calathea Orbifolia, Thai Constellation, Burros tail, Heart Leaf Philodendron, Monstera Variegata and my Norfolk Pine. Can’t whittle the choice down more than that 😄

    • @BotanicalBrunette
      @BotanicalBrunette  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Haha it’s so hard to choose right?! Those are great picks tho! 👏😊🌿

    Philodendron Branti is kind of fragile. When I was planting it was breaking apart. I have it in a small pot in chunky mix and I check it often if the top "soil" is dry. I don't let it go bone dry. It puts out new leafs. They are extremely small but that's better than nothing. I assume they'll get bigger when winter is over. I am very happy it's still alive and growing. I have hope for it.

      Hi Dorothy! Congrats on your new Hoya! That one is so easy and low maintenance. Mine actually was only a little bigger than yours is now (I got it in a 4 inch pot) and it’s grown so much in the last 2 years I’ve had it! I keep mine under a grow lights on my plant shelves.

    Worst plants of the year. Scindapsus Moonlight and black velvet alocasia. I don't know what the freaking hell they want. They look amazing and die amazingly. Now I avoid them like the plague.
