    I’m pretty sure I watch every or darn near every Woodworking channel on TH-cam right now. I’ve only recently discovered yours and am very surprised that you aren’t one of the leading TH-cam woodworkers in the field right now. Your channel is excellent. The projects are professionally done and beautifully photographed. The background music is quite pleasant and the overall topics and themes I can see as being very popular with the public. Congratulations on an excellent body of work so far. I look forward to seeing much more of it.

    I never understood the logic behind charging less in exchange for creative freedom. I build a lot of commission furniture, with varying degrees of creative input and freedom, but budgeting has nothing to do with that in my opinion, If me being creative takes more time , I charge for it, creativity has value in my eyes, (even though its not always the case that it takes more time to be creative).Some people can afford it and appreciate that, others want something specific and don't care for my vision, and that's fine too! this is just my opinion, don't devalue your creative freedom!

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Thanks for saying that. In this case the client just had an upper limit to the budget and I got inspired while designing and wanted to make this piece. They loved it and were cool with me taking the time required to make a video too so we went for it.
      But I agree. I do this very infrequently now and have raised my prices to where I think my skills are these days. Valuing your own time is a hard skill to learn. I believe in the long run my body of work will be filled out and my asking prices will be justified because I’ve invested in myself on projects like this.
      Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.

      I agree with Tomas's point about getting paid - my biggest financial mistakes have been where I undercharged for my work. But it's also kinda neat to get paid to learn and try new things.

    I think the surface texture you did on the sides makes the piece special. I do a lot of that type of texturing on benches and yes, also cabinets. But I found that using a gouge to make the cuts is satisfying, and, actually pretty fast and gives a very nice result. Yep, you DO need a really sharp gouge, but with that, I can do between 4 and 8 square feet of texturing in an hour. Anyway, great video

    Fellow NC resident - this cold weather has been a killer in an unheated shop. I am about to embark on making my wife bedside tables and facing the same issue with infeed space/ and fence capacity on my little table saw and a huge panel. Thought about using my track saw, but don't trust it either. I think I may just use the tracksaw to cross cut at 90* and go for my router table with a big ol' chamfer bit to miter

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah honestly after trying it on this project, my confidence is renewed in the track saw. I worried that little wobbles left and right would keep the seam from being tight. But some careful setup and checking that the saw is married to the track well proved it works fine to do these miters. I do recommend having track clamps though. Wouldn’t try it without them.

    You do you, but 13:00 minutes in i was wincing in great because you definitely have a major risk of kickback doing that cut on such a narrow piece. Crosscut sled or miter is much safer.

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the issue there is just the shallow angle. I have a little internal formula I use for judging whether the proportions and minimum contact surface with the fence can justify a cut like that. But yes in general cross cutting a piece that is longer than it is wide is a kickback risk. And I agree I could have done that cut more safely with a miter gauge. Perhaps I’ll just err on that side of things moving forward because an audience is watching me - regardless of what I know to be safe for my own work.

    Love the shoecrenza! I made one a few years back for a client, but it was definitely not as cool.
    Also, heat in the shop is a game changer. Just had 2 similar heaters installed in my garage shop. On a frigid 10 degree day up here in the northeast, they can get my uninsulated garage shop up to about 50-55 degrees. It is GLORIOUS.

      @@sturdyboneswoodworking LOL, yes, sorry. Something shoecrenza-like :)
      I fire mine up on their highest setting about an hour before heading out there... I am so happy I have unlocked warm non-propane heated workshop (which defeats the purpose, because you've got to ventilate it, thus bringing in cold air!)

  • @yoelai
    @yoelai 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    If you don't have enough infeed space, flip the miter gauge so that the fence is forward.

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      hmm...sounds kinda dangerous. May be fine if you clamp it I guess. I think what I need to really do is build a table saw sled just for mitered cuts so the piece can be supported on both sides.

    • @yoelai
      @yoelai 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @sturdyboneswoodworking why dangerous? It's perfectly fine, it rides in the miter slot exactly the same. You flip it so that the fence is closer to thd blade, then just adjust the fence because it will probably intersect with the blade so just move it and it will work.
      One gripe is that if you want to cut a large panel, it may be difficult to reach the fence while holding the piece through the cut, but I bet you can manage
