- Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice spoke after his team beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 in Game 2 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final on Monday, June 10, 2024.
The Panthers have a 2-0 lead in the series with Game 3 on Thursday night at 8 p.m. (ABC) in Edmonton.
Florida lost captain Aleksander Sasha Barkov after he took a flying elbow to the head from Edmonton star Leon Draisaitl.

On Monday night, the Panthers trailed 1-0 before Niko Mikkola tied the score in the second.
Evan Rodrigues scored twice in the third - including on the power-play resulting from the Barkov hit - with Aaron Ekblad adding an empty net.
Sergei Bobrovsky had 18 saves; Anton Lundell had two primary assists.

As a Canucks fan, I can tell you that Oilers can get frustrated easily when things don't go their way.
Finally people are starting to see how dirty the oilers are. Lundell got punched in the face unsuspectingly. Kulikov got blatantly sticked in the nuts. This hit by Draisaitl. The knee on knee against Luostarinen by Foegele. Last game Kane sucker punching Tkachuk. This team is trash. They did this shit against Vancouver and Dallas too. This game was an absolute disgrace for Canadian and Edmonton hockey fans.

Watched this multiple times at varuous speeds. Was worth watching again at normal speed (1.0). So much to digest and watch the wheels turn in real time. The commanders vision and intent to talk about playoff hockey at training camp is fascinating to me. Paul Maurice is just as entertaining to watch than the game itself. So much to peel back and discuss, the wisdom from experience oozing out of the scars from previous losses leaves me in awe. Modern day hockey at the professional level has never witnessed a more fierce competitor than Paul Maurice.

I chuckled at the comment. In no way shape or form a fan of Edmonton, but this was called "NHL level hockey" in the not too distant future. The NHL has done a great job of professionalizing the league and highlighting the talent versus brute force, but end of the day it's in the DNA of the sport. Not of today's game but something we're accustomed to seeing in the days of Bobby Clarke and graduating to Lindros. Guys like Lindros couldn't finish a career strong due to the amount of concussions and assumed TBI's, which in hindsight states a lot about the league and how they've matured. But can't help but chuckle when an elbow to the face gets a player highlighted in a presser.
In Slow Mo it was a very sneaky head shot. Drai should get a game like Soucy did to McDive.

You can see it in his eyes. You can see the anger. You can hear the frustration. Of course he's one of the most smooth-talking and diplomatic coaches in the NHL and he's sly, he won't outright say what he has in mind but I think we all know what he said to the players after this. Lost all respect for the Oilers....Draisaitl should have gotten a major penalty and a game misconduct for the elbow to the head of Barkov. And then toward the end of the game, both Carrick and Desharnais should have gotten major penalties and a game misconduct for the nonsense crap they did. Draisaitl is a temperamental player. Barkov has been Florida's best skater. He has frustrated Leon two games in a row. Draisaitl saw his opportunity, left his feet, delivered an intentional elbow to the jaw of his nemesis. Barkov may have a broken jaw or concussion, possibly both. NHL Player Safety has to suspend Draisaitl one game for this foul.
Truer words never spoken. Playoff hockey is different. You have to play this way all season. There is no magic switch to flip on when the playoffs start. Many regular season teams thrive on talent alone during the season, running up scores and personnel stats against inferior teams. When the playoffs start, the skilled players get shut down and the teams get exposed.

I don’t see a suspension. For sure Florida fans will see it differently but from a non biased perspective I don’t see any intent. Panthers are extremely smart and it’s all about gaining an edge anywhere. They know already before the game if one of their players get bumped in the head or hit weird to stay down, have the league look, draw a minor or major and perhaps in the next game get the call since the refs are on their toes. They need to take advantage of these questionable hits when they have players like Bennett on the ice and know it’s a matter of time until he is under the scope again…tilting the rink in any aspect of the game that may give
you advantage deeper into the playoffs. Hopefully Barkov is ok and I am sure he will be in Game 3

Man these comments that want Draisaitl suspended haven’t watched any other games this playoffs. Fogel should be suspended and not Draisatl. Fogel’s was a career ender and an awful awful hit. Draisaitl’s hit was bad but no different than Kulikov’s head hit in the rangers series, Panarin’s hit on Oshie in the caps rangers series, and Trouba where the Elbow barely makes contact with Rodrigues head and Rodrigues sells it. I think the NHL got the Draisaitl call spot on.
