"I feel like michael cera never intended to act but ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time and was too awkward to tell them he wasn’t an actor so just filmed stuff anyway and now he’s let it go too far and can’t back out." best description of him ever
Its actually been a well used joke since the airplane series. " not another teen movie" also used it where a photo of a jock is shown then it shows said jock in the same outfit and face expression.
Fun fact: Edgar Wright told his entire cast to not blink as much as they can while filming so the movie could feel more like a comic book. It's not something you notice at first but the effect is sure present
I find the comic even funnier where he walks into the coffee shop and finds Julie instead of his sister and thats when he realizes all Starbucks aren't connected via wormhole.
He did it to make sure it's her that's her there and not someone else. That's why the camera follows him into the cafe afterwards, basically confirming to the audience that there's no way it'll be anyone besides her. Which makes it that much more jarring when it suddenly isn't. Gotta love Edgar Wright
I think it is because it is made to look like a comic strip. Therefore it is not that the payphone is directly outside (though I'm sure it likely is a stone's throw), but the speed is to be indicative of the very next panel.
I never really noticed until recently but this movie actually had one hell of a cast. Sure, 75% of them weren't that big back then but almost every single face in this film now is pretty big in one way or another. Really makes this one all the more impressive.
@Connie Ford set up is not foreshadowing. She is directly hinting that they’re not all boyfriends. Foreshadowing would be something like “I’m glad I don’t have to fight a girl”
I love that you SEE his sister about to put her hair up in a ponytail, so that when he walks in, WE the audience automatically think it's her as well, so the shock is that much more powerful.
Michael Cera has that effect because he adds little pauses and stuff to his dialogue which make his speech sound authentic and natural rather than robotic and scripted. The writing itself doesn't seem improved, though. It's pretty expertly written imo
It feels scripted to sound unscripted, every line feels very succinct and casual so it feels like they’re just casually throwing wild stuff out, plus their expressions are pretty static too, I’m guessing to emulate the comics more. Yet there’s still micro-voice acting that makes the intonations feels weight and dynamic. Idk
The way Scott's hat just appears on his head in the reverse shot is so funny. Normally this would be criticized in other films but they really work with and against the medium to create great comedic moments like that
There was an interview somewhere that she did saying she got that idea for the phone delivery for the character from some late night movie she'd seen the night before. She liked it, tried it at the audition and was hired on the spot.
I can't get over how fucking good the sound editing is in this movie! Every little sound effect is perfectly timed. The mugs at 0:59. The coffee machine at 1:01. The close of the register at 1:48. The sound of the steaming coffee at 2:04 to 2:09 to parallel her dialogue. It's so subtle but so so good!
1:06 Scott tells Ramona he's annoyed she disappeared, Ramona says "yeah, I do that", followed by a door opening at 1:11 as though someone is leaving. Incredibly clever editing, so subtle but so effective.
"Your hair's getting shaggy.""Yeah?" *beanie suddenly appears on his head* Love love LOVE the detail in this movie that flies over people's heads. It's so subtle, that sometimes I forget he wasn't wearing it before.
Why doesn't Scott have a job? Simple. The protagonists in video games NEVER have jobs, they just roam around completing quests/missions. Everyone else has jobs because they're NPCs. Like Nurse Joy.
It's great, it's so dense with subtle moments and jokes. From the overt censoring, his calling from outside reveal, to his sister leaving reveal, to the Ramona next to him reveal, to the Envy behind Ramona reveal. Down to the subtle things like the hissing of the steamer as Envy talks, the hat when she mentions his hair... it packs so much into 2 minutes. Edgar is such a craftsman.
If you look a Stacey while she's talking to Scott she's tying up her hair and when Scott walks in Julie's tying up HER hair which makes Scott (and most of us) think that Julie is Stacey. (0:11 and 0:20)
eat jin and open your rice I just wish they could have done the scene the way it is in the book, but that would be really difficult without a narrator. Scott doesn’t realize that there are independent coffee shops and that his sister doesn’t work at all of them.
