I’ve got ice cream banana, baby pawpaws, and peanut butter fruit tree growing outside, and several other tropicals in greenhouse, the pb and banana are both using lights and frost covers staying 45+ in these 24 degree nights.

I would recommend also using hardware cloth around the tree first before adding the straw. Warm, loose piles of plant litter are perfect homes for mice and voles to overwinter too. They can chew on the bark of your plants/trees and possibly girdle them, eliminating any progress from the past season and if it's a grafted variety, they may be lost all together.

Question. What is a easy and simple way to winterize fig trees in containers? They are in large pots which are very heavy for moving and I am an older woman. My fig trees are very nice and do well in these containers. I really don't want to lose my trees.. Help needed.. I love all your gardening tips. All of my fig trees are doing well thanks to your growing tips.. Thanks for such a great channel

Great idea! I covered my Meiwa kumquat, Meyer Lemon and Page orange. I have the incandescent lights on at night

Excellent! Mine are on as we speak, plus a water barrel next to all of them. We had back to back 25 degree nights, and looks like mid-week is going to be even worse!

Question- when I use wheat straw it takes a whole year to get rid of the wheat sprouting from seeds in the straw. You don't have that issue?

Sounds like you used hay, which contains the seed, stalk, and leaves. Straw should be mostly stalk. I didn't have any noticeable sprouting when I used it last year.

@littlebiscuit53 You are probably right. I went to buy something packaged that said seedless and the guy checking me out said to use this local stuff because the other was too expensive. Thanks.

I do. I buy my wheat straw months in advance. I let the bales sit for 2-3 months to begin rotting. Then, I use it. I've learned to always have rotting wheat straw on hand.

I followed your advice last year and it worked for the most part. One side of my house i lost two figs. They were on the west of my house and struggled the summer before. When i uncovered them they were much too wet which was unexpected because I'm in a 🏜️

Try planting them on a berm, or plant them in a raised bed if your soil is poor: th-cam.com/video/WPBhUoCLKzY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=J6kvAj1sJRWNYS5K

@2MinuteGardenTips The soil is very bad. I also lost goumi and a crab apple. I like the idea of a raised bed to get them started. I will probably try that with the next round.
