Did that guy seriously just say that an armed robbery is the worst crime one could commit outside of murder? I mean, it's a pretty serious crime, but what about rapists? Pedophiles? Child abusers? Stalkers? The fact that this was a minor being coerced by an adult never factored into this?
He said dangerous. And yes armed robbery is quite possibly one of the most dangerous crimes one can commit in terms of morbidity. The risk that someone dies Is pretty high. Is it the most henius of crimes? No it is not considering the position this 16 year old was put in and the state of desperation most people are in.
I went to prison when I was 16 years old I did 6 years it was a dramatic experience it change me for the best and the worst but I understand what this dude is going through. I hope he gets it together. It was hard for me to readjust back to the real world but having family support or any type of support is helpful and a blessing. Now I’m doing good for my self and I have my FREEDOM
Seeing that after so many months of being out he didn't resort to crime, and not in prison again made me really enjoy this young man's story even more. Thank you for not losing hope.

I watch documentaries like this a lot but… wow this one wrecked me. I actually cried. You can hear the pain and confusion every time he talks. They completely broke him.

I agree but that’s not what this comment is touching on. I think this comment is more directed to the fact that he was sent to an adult prison at such a young age and that broke him. Not that he didn’t deserve to be locked up, but that he didn’t deserve to be locked up in that magnitude which ended up having lasting effects on his undeveloped brain.
I'm sure the store clerk got over this in a few months, and sleeps perfectly fine now. Yeah it's needless trauma, which is sad. But in this specific circumstance, the punishment really didn't fit the crime. Justice is not supposed to be so black and white. this boy was victimized himself.

Sorry to say there is no real help for him. He went to prison as a kid and they abused him physically and mentally. I know i better never go to jail, i am not made for that.

The people that put his ass there need medication. They need to get him off that shit. His answer to "Are you taking your medication?" wasn't where I saw a problem, it was that sad, heartbreaking look in his eyes. Officers responded to the scene at 3:06 p.m., and a city of Bakersfield code enforcement officer saw an individual firing a handgun at an unknown target, according to a department news release. The suspect, Alonza Thomas, 35, was followed by officers to a nearby residence. He then fled the residence on foot with Justin Griffin, 20, and a 16-year-old male juvenile, BPD said. All three were apprehended, according to BPD. Thomas was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, participation in a criminal street gang, resisting/delaying an officer and being a felon in possession of ammunition. Griffin and the juvenile were arrested for unrelated arrest warrants and resisting/delaying an officer. While no shooting victim was found, several bullet strikes to a nearby building were, police said. Sept. 24, 2020
It's heartbreaking that Alonza is now on medication to help him cope, and he truly isn't himself after this unfortunate ordeal. This really has you appreciate life and how precious having a supportive loving family is. This tramatic experiences has scared him for the rest of his life, which all stemmed from a bad decision he made as a 16 yr old. I hope Alonza finds peace and some positive non threatening coping mechanisms so he can prosper as an adult.

What happened to the clerk was unfair had he been over 18 he would've done at least 20 because of the stolen firearm and use of a firearm to commit the crime so 13 was a good deal

In case you've forgotten, the seriousness of crimes committed by juveniles and rising, lest you've forgotten Columbine and other school related shootings, the only difference those guys were never caught because they committed suicide. What's even worse is that many of these perpetrators in the court room lack any remorsefulness for what they've done. Just suppose he shot and killed someone because the gun went off, maybe he never intended to kill but someone is now dead.....a husband, a brother, father, best friend won't be going home tonight.

And to make it even worse, Ethan committed his crime in Texas, the one state that has a law specifically addressing intoxication manslaughter. He should be serving 8-80 years (four consecutive 2-20 year sentences). The way he might have been raised doesn't change anything for the people he killed and there is no possible way that he didn't know exactly what he was doing.
Excellent points. Texas has their priorities all scewed up. Several years ago Allen, TX built a $60 million HIGH SCHOOL football stadium. A year or two later had to be closed for renovations because it was falling apart.
To put a young man like this in Super Max where he automatically has to check in is incomprehensible.Most guys in SuperMax have been in and out of many prisons and are usually violent,to put this young man in a SuperMax prison is like putting a jr high school football player in the NFL, he will get crushed.The high and mighty judge would sing a different tune if the young man was his son!
Yes indeed they would be behind the scenes with other drugs and prosecutors cutting crazy deals! I think all judges should have to spend a week in a supermax or even a regular prison to see what they're putting people into! I bet the sentences would change after that experience! Years ago a man who was the stepfather to his girlfriend sons. This happened in New York he forced her and her sons robb people. After he caught when the cops talked to the children they found out that the stepfather was abusive .

People who get caught by the cops in an armed robbery will often be terrified and try claiming that some other person “made them do it” usually entails a story of some other person who apparently pulled a gun on them and threatened them into committing the armed robbery for them... right before they allegedly hand over a loaded firearm to them to commit the robbery with... make any sense??? “Do this armed robbery or I’ll shoot you dead!!! Ok now here take this loaded gun and do it!!” .... it’s quite a far fetched unlikely excuse that is pretty common in cases like this. This other person almost certainly doesn’t exist... he just did the armed robbery trying to make it on his own and wanted to get easy money. Still he’s a kid but the fact that he’s lying about it still and not owning up to the responsibility is troubling.
Those prosecutors are very aware and conscious that they are sentencing little children to a life of rape and I believe they get off on that. They are the real criminals. They are derelict if they don't know this

@frog fur yeah you're probably right. i say three months because it's long enough to make a serious impact in their life and give them real time to think about what it really means to be incarcerated. the first month is the hardest, but the second month is when it really starts to sink in.. the third month is when you begin adapting to it and it begins to change who you are deep down inside. a single month just isn't long enough, in my opinion. not for them to really get a feel for what they're doing to the people they shove away into a cage. it changes the punishment from just being another random name for some random amount of time on another list, to it being a real person locked away in a real place. i feel like there's just a disconnection between prisoners and prosecutors.. like they just don't really feel what they're doing is real, you know? like they're just playing a video game or something.

Just Ty If the meds are helping I see no need. Meds can be a great tool to use for mental illness. Not forever, but for a while, until he can get balanced. I have severe manic depression and before meds all I could think about was killing myself. After the right meds I'm now stable, working, and excersising.
Those 13 years of torture has permanently scarred this young man....no matter how many years he is free.....he will never ever adjust to society....the one thing you can never regain is time....those child hood years is what shapes and molds you into an adult...it's what creates your character.....and the mere fact that the system really put a 15/16 year old kid in an adult max security prison with his first offense is beyond me.....he didn't kill anyone or even get anything and the fact that he was forced to do it! I was locked up for a few years when I was young. Now its 25 years later- all 100% crime free- and I'm still institutionalized. I recently bought my own house and I live alone. It has a nice living room, dining room, kitchen, etc. But I put a chair in my bedroom where I also have a tv, and now I spend 95% of my time at home in my small bedroom instead of on my nice couch in my large living room. I just got so used to being in a small, enclosed area that I'm much more comfortable in my little bedroom than anywhere else in my house.
This is a disgrace! You don’t put a misguided kid in a supermax prison for adults and cage him like an animal. His suicide attempts, high levels of anxiety and panic attacks were treated with a handful of pills. There was no real help for this child. He wasn’t a hardened criminal or gang member. He did not have what it takes to survive in that environment. He was a child! And this was child abuse. But he can make it. He can defy the odds set by the system that set out to break him down- by treating him like a caged animal. By the grace of God he can make it!

Both of my parents though deceased now were African-American. BTW I can't pass as anything else. Yeah I ask that question, I came from a large family, we were poor but my parents managed to make ends meet. We were on welfare twice when I was growing up, only because Dad was ill and unable to work, However, when he got back on his feet the welfare stopped, it was never a lifestyle in my family. Many of my contemporaries didn't have a man in the house. We were fortunate, when Dad's car pulled up in front of the house, a hush fell over the household, make no mistake though, Mom had control over the family too but when Dad walked inside he was not about nonsense. All of us finished high school, none of my sisters got pregnant out of wedlock. My parents have never been to the police station to get us out of trouble nor have they ever had to meet with the school principal because of bad behavior. I'm in my 70s now and three of my siblings are gone now leaving four. Yes having a father teaching you how to be a man made all the difference. My parents instilled Christian values and a respect for the law. BTW, I've never been randomly stopped while driving nor searched and frisked. It's all about choices

O betcha the judge waa benefiting off his trust and a stakeholder inn the prison he sent him to. The judge is corrupted. Here is an excerpt of another case this judge presided over, "A Kern County judge was called on the carpet by the 5th District Court of Appeal for withholding information in an attempted murder case. Judge Lee Felice withheld pertinent information about the personnel records of two investigating officers in the criminal trial, the appellate justices found."

Glad to see a prison documentary about how difficult it is, especially for young men who find themselves in that environment. Unfortunately America has made incarceration a business so people profit from every aspect of it and no politician would ever want to be seen as going soft on crime. Rehabilitation is frowned upon!

As an outsider (I'm from the UK) American justice always seems like revenge. Mandatory minimums distort due process and why on Earth would you treat a juvenile as an adult? You should never carry a gun unless you are of sound mind with the reason to protect your life or the lives of other people. When you pick up a gun and aim it at someone who is not threatening you, that is attempted murder.
If you have ever had training in gun safety, the first lesson you learn is you NEVER point a gun at someone unless you intend to kill them, hopefully in self defense. Pointing is indication of desire to kill, or attempted murder.

Very, if I could help I would give him some music to write to just to help him vent. I saw this documentary where in Jamaica they have music programs in prison and the inmates have a studio and instruments and all. I feel like it should be apart of our prison systems art classes more schooling like a normal life but behind bars to help them still hold some sense of being a human.

What happened to this young man was a living hell on earth, a nightmare that you cannot wake up from. I cannot even imagine how he suffered for 13 years in solitary confinement. Let's not for a moment forget the victim in this story and what he had to indure. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. A lot of heinous crimes committed by juveniles before him led up to California to change the laws to reflect the new reality of juveniles committing serious crimes and not be able to send them away. He was the first one under the law to be sentenced and I wish him a good life but let this story remind people that they will face some very serious time if they commit crimes against humanity!

He seems slow. He wasn't doing better four months later. He looked like he was trying to qualify for disability. Would it have made a world of difference if he was 18 instead of 16? I dunno about that. I thought his sentence was harsh, but we're told to keep our mouths shut when we try to help with suggestions that aren't politically correct. I went to prison at 16 for murder in corpus Christi tx. Got ten years on my seven year feds came and got me. They gave me twenty years for organized crime. I've got out at 42 years old. I'm 43 years old an out doing good. I look at life totally different now.

My grandson was placed in prison the year he made 18. Had no prior record and something strange happens each time he is ready to go before parole board...(fight etc). He has been in prison since 2011. Has never driven a car. However, he finished high school with a GED in prison. Depression and anxiety troubled him too for a while in prison, but JESUS saved him in 2016! HalleluJah! He began to read his KJV Bible and was able to come off the meds they gave him. We are able to laugh together and really find comfort in the fact that God is in control. My dear grandson has spent years in solitary confinement. Watching this gives me great respect for him. He never complains. Thank GOD for the Gospel! St John 3:16! 💖

It's typical knee jerk conservative reaction...Lock them up, throw away the key, especially for minorities. My 16 year old brother was with a group of older guys who attempted to rob a guy and ended up hitting him, causing him to fall to the ground, hit his head, and die. My brother was not even there. But yes, I understand that he could rightfully be charged as an accessory, and he was. At 16 he was convicted and sent to a men's state prison here in California. In the beginning, when I'd visiting, his face would always be swollen and bruised, but he refused to talk about it. When he was released, nearly 10 years later, he had the mind of a child.

I went to prison when I was 16 years old I did 6 years it was a dramatic experience it change me for the best and the worst but I understand what this dude is going through. I hope he gets it together. It was hard for me to readjust back to the real world but having family support or any type of support is helpful and a blessing. Now I’m doing good for my self and I have my FREEDOM

I agree but that’s not what this comment is touching on. I think this comment is more directed to the fact that he was sent to an adult prison at such a young age and that broke him. Not that he didn’t deserve to be locked up, but that he didn’t deserve to be locked up in that magnitude which ended up having lasting effects on his undeveloped brain.
I'm sure the store clerk got over this in a few months, and sleeps perfectly fine now. Yeah it's needless trauma, which is sad. But in this specific circumstance, the punishment really didn't fit the crime.

The people that put his ass there need medication. They need to get him off that shit. His answer to "Are you taking your medication?" wasn't where I saw a problem, it was that sad, heartbreaking look in his eyes. Bakersfield Police arrested three people Wednesday afternoon following a ShotSpotter activation in the 200 block of V Street.
Officers responded to the scene at 3:06 p.m., and a city of Bakersfield code enforcement officer saw an individual firing a handgun at an unknown target, according to a department news release.
The suspect, Alonza Thomas, 35, was followed by officers to a nearby residence. He then fled the residence on foot with Justin Griffin, 20, and a 16-year-old male juvenile, BPD said. All three were apprehended, according to BPD.
Thomas was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, participation in a criminal street gang, resisting/delaying an officer and being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Griffin and the juvenile were arrested for unrelated arrest warrants and resisting/delaying an officer.
While no shooting victim was found, several bullet strikes to a nearby building were, police said.

This really has you appreciate life and how precious having a supportive loving family is. This tramatic experiences has scared him for the rest of his life, which all stemmed from a bad decision he made as a 16 yr old. I hope Alonza finds peace and some positive non threatening coping mechanisms so he can prosper as an adult.

In case you've forgotten, the seriousness of crimes committed by juveniles and rising, lest you've forgotten Columbine and other school related shootings, the only difference those guys were never caught because they committed suicide. What's even worse is that many of these perpetrators in the court room lack any remorsefulness for what they've done.

And to make it even worse, Ethan committed his crime in Texas, the one state that has a law specifically addressing intoxication manslaughter. He should be serving 8-80 years (four consecutive 2-20 year sentences). The way he might have been raised doesn't change anything for the people he killed and there is no possible way that he didn't know exactly what he was doing.
Excellent points. Texas has their priorities all scewed up. Several years ago Allen, TX built a $60 million HIGH SCHOOL football stadium. A year or two later had to be closed for renovations because it was falling apart.

Years ago a man who was the stepfather to his girlfriend sons. This happened in New York he forced her and her sons robb people. After he caught when the cops talked to the children they found out that the stepfather was abusive .

@frog fur yeah you're probably right. i say three months because it's long enough to make a serious impact in their life and give them real time to think about what it really means to be incarcerated. the first month is the hardest, but the second month is when it really starts to sink in.. the third month is when you begin adapting to it and it begins to change who you are deep down inside.
a single month just isn't long enough, in my opinion. not for them to really get a feel for what they're doing to the people they shove away into a cage.

I was locked up for a few years when I was young. Now its 25 years later- all 100% crime free- and I'm still institutionalized. I recently bought my own house and I live alone. It has a nice living room, dining room, kitchen, etc. But I put a chair in my bedroom where I also have a tv, and now I spend 95% of my time at home in my small bedroom instead of on my nice couch in my large living room. I just got so used to being in a small, enclosed area that I'm much more comfortable in my little bedroom than anywhere else in my house.

His suicide attempts, high levels of anxiety and panic attacks were treated with a handful of pills. There was no real help for this child. He wasn’t a hardened criminal or gang member. He did not have what it takes to survive in that environment. He was a child! And this was child abuse.
But he can make it. He can defy the odds set by the system that set out to break him down- by treating him like a caged animal. By the grace of God he can make it!

We were on welfare twice when I was growing up, only because Dad was ill and unable to work, However, when he got back on his feet the welfare stopped, it was never a lifestyle in my family. We were fortunate, when Dad's car pulled up in front of the house, a hush fell over the household, make no mistake though, Mom had control over the family too but when Dad walked inside he was not about nonsense. All of us finished high school, none of my sisters got pregnant out of wedlock. My parents have never been to the police station to get us out of trouble nor have they ever had to meet with the school principal because of bad behavior. I'm in my 70s now and three of my siblings are gone now leaving four. Yes having a father teaching you how to be a man made all the difference. My parents instilled Christian values and a respect for the law. BTW, I've never been randomly stopped while driving nor searched and frisked. It's all about choices

Officers responded to the scene at 3:06 p.m., and a city of Bakersfield code enforcement officer saw an individual firing a handgun at an unknown target, according to a department news release.
The suspect, Alonza Thomas, 35, was followed by officers to a nearby residence. He then fled the residence on foot with Justin Griffin, 20, and a 16-year-old male juvenile, BPD said. All three were apprehended, according to BPD.
Thomas was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, participation in a criminal street gang, resisting/delaying an officer and being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Griffin and the juvenile were arrested for unrelated arrest warrants and resisting/delaying an officer.
While no shooting victim was found, several bullet strikes to a nearby building were, police said.

Very, if I could help I would give him some music to write to just to help him vent. I saw this documentary where in Jamaica they have music programs in prison and the inmates have a studio and instruments and all. I feel like it should be apart of our prison systems art classes more schooling like a normal life but behind bars to help them still hold some sense of being a human.

This was so heart-breaking. I feel like Im going to throw up.
What happened to this young man was a living hell on earth, a nightmare that you cannot wake up from. I cannot even imagine how he suffered for 13 years in solitary confinement. Let's not for a moment forget the victim in this story and what he had to indure. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. A lot of heinous crimes committed by juveniles before him led up to California to change the laws to reflect the new reality of juveniles committing serious crimes and not be able to send them away. He was the first one under the law to be sentenced and I wish him a good life but let this story remind people that they will face some very serious time if they commit crimes against humanity!

@@galdionite123 he was forced to do a robbery he wasn't bad at all, 3 years in juvenile detention what he should have gotten... In my country under 15 years wouldn't even get charged... 16 year old would do probably 9 months after he would be 18 years old or maybe that's too harsh

He seems slow. He wasn't doing better four months later. He looked like he was trying to qualify for disability. Would it have made a world of difference if he was 18 instead of 16? I dunno about that. I thought his sentence was harsh, but we're told to keep our mouths shut when we try to help with suggestions that aren't politically correct. Knock off the victim mentality, stop committing crimes, stay in school, get a job, and stop getting knocked up outside of marriage. Things could have been different for him if he had a father and a good mother.
I went to prison at 16 for murder in corpus Christi tx. Got ten years on my seven year feds came and got me. They gave me twenty years for organized crime. I've got out at 42 years old. I'm 43 years old an out doing good. I look at life totally different now.
That prosecutor is most likely a person who calls himself a Christian and has no idea what Jesus teachings are, or does not care.

Actually, Mr. Prosecutor, there is a “middle-ground.” This kid had no prior offenses and was manipulated. Big difference of a 16 year old who does this on his own and one who was violently coerced.
Why the fuck was his mother throwing him out of the house at 14 years old, then he meets some stranger that took him in? That was a little weird..and also when he claimed he wanted to leave, this guy threatens him to go hold up a gas station? I believe there's more to this story than what's being portrayed, because the other guy should have definitely gotten arrested as well, and also his mom? Did she not worry for the week he was gone?
Prosecutor was pretty unreasonable. It’s weird that he’d take a stance like that in this situation. Hope there wasn’t any bias involved.
that is also under the assumption he isn't making that up.. Who knows, he very well may be telling the truth but it could also be a concocted story to alleviate some level of responsibility. I have no knowledge of the investigation or if they looked into this guy that apparently forced him into it but take it at face value.

Maybe he is lying and he was not manipulated. And even if he was, still he could have asked for help instead of trying to commit armed robbery. If he is old enough to drive a car, he is old enough to go to prison for the crimes he commits.

My grandson was placed in prison the year he made 18. Had no prior record and something strange happens each time he is ready to go before parole board...(fight etc). He has been in prison since 2011. Has never driven a car. However, he finished high school with a GED in prison. Depression and anxiety troubled him too for a while in prison, but JESUS saved him in 2016! HalleluJah! He began to read his KJV Bible and was able to come off the meds they gave him. We are able to laugh together and really find comfort in the fact that God is in control. My dear grandson has spent years in solitary confinement. Watching this gives me great respect for him. He never complains. Thank GOD for the Gospel!

It's typical knee jerk conservative reaction...Lock them up, throw away the key, especially for minorities. My 16 year old brother was with a group of older guys who attempted to rob a guy and ended up hitting him, causing him to fall to the ground, hit his head, and die. My brother was not even there. But yes, I understand that he could rightfully be charged as an accessory, and he was. At 16 he was convicted and sent to a men's state prison here in California. In the beginning, when I'd visiting, his face would always be swollen and bruised, but he refused to talk about it. When he was released, nearly 10 years later, he had the mind of a child.
