Thank you so much for these words of encouragement! 😀 I recently got hired as a 3rd grade teacher for this upcoming school year and I finished my first day of school rules and procedures PowerPoint. Lining Up to Leave The Classroom is just one of the many procedures I have for my classroom. I want my class to run smoothly. I know I have to stay consistent with my procedures in order for the kiddos to understand how the class operates. I thank God for this opportunity and look forward to continuing to impacting the next generation as a teacher! 😀
I have watched so many of your videos today! I am SO THANKFUL for you taking time to share. You are adorable, and kind, and such a great teacher. I have a teaching degree but stayed home to raise three kiddos until I was able to (wanted to) go back to work. I just got a job as a 1st grade teacher at their school so I'm cramming before school starts! You have been such a blessing!!!!
Its so embarrassing but lining up quietly and walking in a silent straight line through the school remains one of my biggest weaknesses. You're right about forced styles backfiring. We walk in number order, and #11 really shouldn't be close to #12! I need to switch things up.
You have some great names for procedures. “Firstie for the Week”, “learning spots” I’ve done number order when it has been needed. But I also pick a “secret student” that I watch for perfect line behavior. If the SS achieves, they receive class cash. You are precious! New subscriber! 😍
I think line spots are way easier than seat arrangements. Oh. My. Goodness. There is not enough room in my room to separate the kiddos that need to be separated. One year I had 9, yes 9, kids who had preferential seating in their iep or 504! What the heck! It makes me crazy! My room is not big enough. You are awesome! I love your videos and I have recommended them to new teachers who I mentor. Keep up the great work!
That was ME!! I was so excited to see you! I told my co-workers there was a celebrity in houuuse! Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks! I'll be praying, praying, praying!
Am a kindergarten teacher and I have my students to pick an alphabet from the bucket and they go in line from A-z or where ever it stops. The alphabet are mixed up every day. I do this for ELA going to lunch and then we will sing a so g about lunch. This helped my students that were struggling with identifying their letters. Also do this with numbers doing my math time before they move to their specials. Once they learn their letters, and numbers. I go with sight words.
I teach VPK. I choose a line leader, caboose, and door holder. I then line them up according to the color of their shirt. I also do two lines. Boys and girls
Thank you for this tip. During my team's summer team planning meeting, my team discussed this for our 7th & 8th graders. We decided they will form a line by alphabetic order and we will practice this.Students never get too old to have line-up procedures!
Yes, the more procedures and routines the better! It does make the class run smoothly with fewer disruptions and discipline problems! Thanks for sharing!
Great tips Miss May! I like to use a line up song. Line up, Line up we've got the best line that you've ever seen.. That's awesome you meet some subscribers!
Once again you have an amazing video! I learn so much from you! Do you have spots on the carpet for their feet to stand on so they know about where to go - or do they just know (this is regarding when you line them up by month or shirt color, etc. and not everyone is in line yet for their reference point)?
I got my degree in elementary education in 2010. I e had many hats since then, but mostly preschool and kindergarten. I am starting a 2nd grade class and am so worried about the “older” kids. Found you online and feel SO MUCH better! Thank you for all of these excellent videos!!!
Hi there, I found your channel yesterday and I absolutely love the tips and brilliant ideas that you have!! I am not a teacher yet but I am working towards my degree. I work as an assistant right now in a structured Autism classroom. I plan to teach general education either Kindergarten or 1st grade. Your ideas for classroom management and expectations are absolutely amazing!! I feel my college course are not preparing me for when I have my own classroom. I am not learning any of the things that I actually need to know that are going to make me a great teacher with a well functioning classroom. So I was looking on TH-cam and found your channel instantly and I am grateful because I am learning so much!! You are all around an awesome person and I absolutely love your channel!! 😁🥰
As I mentioned in the video, I do Firstie of The Week and whoever that student is will be the line leader for the week. This way each student has a chance at being the line leader for a week. ((HUGS))
On placement the teacher lined the kindergarten kids up in alphabetical order. The person at the front of the line one day went to the back the next day so everyone got a turn. I thought they would never get the hang of it but they sure did 👍
Quick question: Do you ever let students talk while they are working? Or are there certain activities that you allow talking? I'm moving down to 1st grade, and the kids are at tables, so I feel like this would encourage talking.
What order do you have them line up in until you figure out where they should be? Do you let them choose their spots at first or at any point and then you revise?

Great video. Classroom management is a struggle for me. It’s getting better each year though. I will definitely use this tip

Thanks from the Netherlands, Miss May!
WOW, the Netherlands? THANK YOU for watching. ((HUGS))
Thanks for the video Miss May.
Have you been to Old Navy?
Thank you so much for watching. Yes, I've been to Old Navy. :)
((HUGS))
I love this idea. How do you manage line jobs? Or do you have any? I want to incorporate this coming year.
Thank you! I don't have line jobs. ((HUGS))
So the child in the front is always in the front?
As I mentioned in the video, I do Firstie of The Week and whoever that student is will be the line leader for the week. This way each student has a chance at being the line leader for a week. ((HUGS))

What would be an effective measure for lining up in middle school?
I’m loving your videos!!
Thank you so much Beth! ((HUGS))
Haven't even watched this one yet, but I love it already. Great idea for a video my friend!
Thanks, friend! ((HUGS))
Love this.
Thank you! ((HUGS))
How do you get the practice time in, when you have curriculum to teach?
I make the time. Curriculum is always second in my book. ((HUGS))
Thank you so much !
Quick question: Do you ever let students talk while they are working? Or are there certain activities that you allow talking?
I'm moving down to 1st grade, and the kids are at tables, so I feel like this would encourage talking.
Absolutely, I let them talk while working. I do have moments where they can't. It just depends on what they're working on. ((HUGS))
Thank you!
You are welcome. ((HUGS))
Really good content. Smart tip!
((Hugs))
What order do you have them line up in until you figure out where they should be? Do you let them choose their spots at first or at any point and then you revise?
So until I figure it out, I just have them line up randomly and I choose a line leader for the day or for the morning and afternoon. ((HUGS))
Thank you!
You bet! ((HUGS))
