Alocasia Pollination

Today I attempted to cross Alocasia Maharani with Alocasia baginda 'Green Dragon' or 'Dragonscale Green'. More inflorescences are opening so I will try other combos. UPDATE: This cross did not work. I selfed Alocasia azlanii using the same method and the ovaries are swelling and have stayed on for a week after pollination. I am hoping for a colour change!

I have a variegated maharani that is sending up flower spikes. I know my chances are incredibly slim, but I am going to collect the pollen and try.

I generally use a super mini small spatula to pollinate. Started with a brush but this way is more practical 🤗🤗

As far as I know, Maharani is a hybrid, Hybridized plants are commonly sterile so that may be why it does not work! :(

Couldn't you just self-pollinate it and produce seeds that may germinate and grow to full-sized copies of itself?

It turned green and swelled up but the plant got a bit dry so they may have been aborted. I am trying again.

Very interested in this, though I have a philodendron moonlight that I am waiting for the flower to open up, which they way it looks to me would be the same way to pollinate as you have done with alocasia. Good luck and hoping its successful. New sub.

What does this do exactly? My Dragon Scale is starting to bloom. Is this bad? Does this mean my plant is happy? Anyone??

She was trying to pollinate to produce seeds, but when alocasia bloom, the female part is receptive before the pollen is ready so it doesn't work unless you have saved pollen to pollinate the new bloom.
It means your plant is happy though!
My dragon scale and my black velvet are starting to bloom right now as well ☺

No, you can't pollinate a plant with its own flowers,. It needs more DNA because it only shares half of its sequence when pollinating.
