Drone Flights in Sussex and Devon

  • In order to make my videos more interesting, in the past I’ve included video footage with some of my videos taken using my older drone, which doesn’t have a gimbal for its camera. This produced less than ideal footage, naturally. Since December 2020 I’ve obtained much better drones and have been practicing with them.
I’ve collected a good deal of footage from these two drones, a Hubsan Zino 2+ and a DJI Mini 2, over the past few months. I decided to take some of that, and produce this video, which includes footage from Sussex, and Devon while we were on holiday this month.
Most of this will be included in future Yank in Sussex videos!

Hi Mike, Use of drones in videos is always good and i think enhances them. I look forward to watching more of your films as you explore. 👍 Keep wandering🚶🏃 Watto.

Mike, the video of your flight along the river was a straight line. To me it flowed a lot smoother. You have some great material to work with. I'm trying to collect some pieces of video to work with, so I can learn how to edit it. What editing program are you using? I'm watching your history of Sussex videos. Very interesting. Beautiful country. As you know........we don't have that kind of history in the US. Just yesterday, I took delivery of a Brompton folding bike (hand built in London), so I guess that's my knod to England. I'd love to visit over there, but at age 75, it's probably not going to happen. So I'll just enjoy videos like yours and Darrens.

Thanks! I agree with the flow aspect. The video editing software I use is Corel VideoStudio. It's not free, but has a 30-day trial. I find it easier to use than some free video editors. You can find some of those here: www.shopify.com/blog/best-free-video-editing-software

I’m no expert on drones but isn’t flying drones over buildings or within 50m of people against the law? Also, don’t want to nitpick but isn’t the shot of the white cliffs of diver nicked from Windows XP built in gallery?

Ah, yes, the Drone Code! Generally, with a drone weighing 250g or more, flying over buildings and within 50m of people is not allowed. But with a sub-250g drone, the rules slacken, and one may fly over built-up areas and closer to people. That's why I switch to the lighter drone (DJI Mini 2) for following the river over the buildings. The heavier drone did get a bit too close to the people over the footbridge, but they moved into range themselves, which I didn't catch until it was too late.
Those weren't the white cliffs of Dover, but the Seven Sisters. Dover's cliffs are in Kent and are the eastern end of the North Downs. The Seven Sisters are in Sussex and are the eastern end of the South Downs. The white cliff photo with the building in the foreground is my own photo, and was taken from Rottingdean. The other, I don't remember where that came from.

@@SussexYank I have a small drone with a camera which is pretty hard to fly, garden scale only! I was thinking of getting the real thing but the regulations seem to have tightened up so much I was a bit put off. It’s not just the risk of damaging people and property, it’s also the data privacy law which applies whenever you record images of third parties in private spaces. Having said that, the chances of being prosecuted are zero - we have vast amounts of law which is barely policed in this country and only sees the light of day if another civilian makes an issue of it and takes you a civilian court. I would definitely make sure I was insured against third part injury even though it’s not mandatory, in the same way as we have dog insurance, because in both cases you could be personally liable for huge damages if you were really unlucky.
Technically you are in breach of the code by flying over buildings even with a small drone. This is the text from the code:
“4. Do not fly closer to people than 50m
This includes people in buildings and transport, including cars, lorries, trains, and boats.
You must keep a minimum horizontal distance of 50m between your drone or model aircraft and people. This creates a no fly zone around people that goes all the way up to the legal height limit. It can help to think of this no fly zone as a cylinder.
You must not fly over people in this no fly zone, even if you fly higher than 50m.”
      EDIT:
Later on it also says: “If you’re flying a drone or model aircraft that’s below 250g, you can fly closer to people than 50m and you can fly over them.”
It’s not exactly the best written document ever! I’m guessing this lets you off the hook with a sub-250g machine. Is that the type to go for?

@@Tailspin80 - Depends upon what you want to do. Heavier drones work better in worse wind conditions. And can have better cameras.
I like sub-250g drones because they are more versatile and easier to pack around. I can hand-launch and land my DJI Mini 2, for example.
The Operator ID doesn't require passing a test. And the Flyer ID (which does require an online test) is not required for a sub-250g drone.
The Flyer ID test is not very difficult, and can be taken online. So that means it is "open book". You can have one browser tab open to the test, while using other tabs to look up the answers.
      Hope this helps!

@@SussexYank Yes, thanks for the info. I hadn’t thought about the wind resistance aspect, but the lower cost and claimed 38 minute flight time of the DJI Mini 3 make it an attractive option, at least for someone with no previous experience of a serious non-toy drone. Most of all the lack of flight restrictions compared to the heavier drones make it more versatile. The TH-cam algorithm keeps putting up videos from channels like DJ AUDITS which seem to hit on a business model of going up to unsuspecting businesses, taking videos, winding up the staff with arguments about their GDPR and flying rights, then flying their sub 250g drones over their premises and sticking whole lot on TH-cam / Tik Tok etc. Quite unethical in my view and borderline illegal but currently profitable judging by the number of views.
