First time chicken owner. We chose Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks. I'm in north central Texas and took the advice of our local feed store as to breed choice. I love my girls. They started laying in March and I get 6 to 8 eggs a day from 9 birds. They are all friendly and easy to handle.

My Buff Orpington hens and rooster I raised many years ago were really docile and good tempered. Now many years later I have two Buff hens and a few other kinds of birds now. Man, my two Buff hens are aggressive as far as ripping treats right of my hand. They also scream bloody murder if you have to pick one up. Funny, maybe I was just lucky with my ladies and their husband in years past.

I had a bunch of different chicken breeds and the road island reds were the most aggressive for sure compared to all the others. I'd say the barred rock and Americanas were the most friendly.

One of neighbor's hens adopted us. She kept jumping a SIX-FOOT fence to get into our yard! She's been doing this for almost a year - and before COVID came, they'd come over and try to get her to go home, or catch her. She didn't want to be caught.
Here's what I think intrigued her. We have parrots. Two Congo African Greys and two Blue & Gold Macaws (the female B&G has laid eggs in our hands and on our feet and laying upside down in my husband's lap!!!) We'd see our neighbor's hen sitting on the back deck in front of the door looking at our birds. On nice days we had the door open so they'd just kind of stare at each other. Another big draw for the hen was the left-over bird seed I'd put at the back of the yard in bushes and under the Douglas Fir for all the little birds and as it seems, squirrels could feast on the left overs in a measure of safety.
This last summer, my husband and I were working in our garage and Ms. Henny comes over and wanders around in our garage. We found out later that she was hanging out in our shed because some of our tools had poop all over them and she was on the cross beam/rafter of the shed when was at about 7'! Later, when we had dug our potatoes and had them laying out to dry...she decided to sample some.
Then one night early last month, we saw her sitting up about 7' on a rubbermaid tote. We had put a nesting box out for her next to where we had the green house and she left us eggs. Then my husband found a make-shift nest with about 6 eggs in it. She started using the nesting box.
Long story short (too late) our neighbor said he'd NEVER had an ALPHA hen just pack her bags and leave! So he told us to keep her. She's a bard rock, I think. She's always making a purring/soft clucking noise, she's VERY mellow (even invited herself into the house, but we can't allow that with parrots) when she knows we're in the garage, she'll come in and check us out. We made a roost for her...didn't want anything to do with. She now sleeps in a cubby shelf right between the furnace and the door from our kitchen to the garage (we blocked off access to the shelves and the track for the garage door...she likes it THAT high!) And that's where she leaves her egg. I clean the cubby out every day, and put a piece of cardboard down to absorb moisture/urine and put some brown paper over that to collect the poop. THAT goes in the compost bin.
Yup. We're thinking of getting some more. (Our neighbor up front just moved HER chickens and one rooster to the back of her property, which is the front of our property, and Miss Henny likes to go up and chat with them, but never jumps the chain link fence. She comes when she's called and loves to roam around the yard and our garden, but enjoys our company. (We live on 3/4 of an acre)

We used to have a barred rock that would go around the front of our house, come up on the porch and peck at the front door. We decided to let her in to see what happened. She walked through the house softly singing, until she found a corner, in our family room, between the old grandfather clock and the wall. She shimmied herself down into that space and sat there a few minutes. We heard the egg drop on the wood floor. Afterwards she got up and walked over to the French door, pecked on it. We opened it and she hopped down the stairs to go through the garden to join the rest of the flock. She did this every 2-3 days, and stopped. We found her sitting on a nest under a shrub.

My golden comet is super friendly, and the loudest when she sees me, sounds like she is yelling "Moooooooommmmmm" and she has a lovely trill my other chickens do not. However, she was over bred to lay eggs. I've gotten 2 eggs a day out of her for years... Most of the time softshell and useless because she cannot get enough calcium and nurtrition to lay 2 eggs a day. She is 8 years old this may. I love her and she is a wonderful pet like my others, but I may not get another due to the over bred for egg laying.

@@cluckieschickens Soft shelled eggs are usually the result of dietary deficiencies, or can be stress related. Are you giving your chickens calcium supplements? Have you looked up all the reasons why hens might lay soft shelled eggs and addressed the problems? I doubt that it's a breed issue.

Good choice Eric. We have always had Rhode Island Reds with great success. They are great with kids and our 2 grandsons just love them. I lived in Huntington Beach, California with my family in a regular neighborhood tract home in the city, but, my heart was in the country. My daughter and I raised a Barred Rock, or Plymouth Rock and a Rhode Island Red from chicks. We would hold them a lot. They liked to sit on our shoulders and walk behind our necks to the other shoulder while nuzzling our necks and playing in our hair. They were so friendly that they would walk up to my hand and I would pick them up with their legs between my fingers and their chests in the palm of my hand. They would also do that for my daughter April, who was about 10 at the time. Every time they saw me, I'd put my hand out near the ground and they'd just walk up and stand there waiting for me to pick them up with one hand. They love to be hugged, petted, carried around or just sit on our laps. However, before they got old enough to lay eggs, there were coyotes near my husband's work, where we had to keep them for a while, and the coyotes got to them. Our hearts were broken, but, while we had them, they were wonderful. I'm moving soon and this time I'm going to have a place where they'll be safe when I get them again. Thank you so much for sharing all of your wonderful knowledge about chickens. It was fun finding out that we've picked a couple of good ones.

There are hundreds of hybrids and heritage chickens(both standard and bantam breeds)Some of the less common breeds such as the Dominique were once very popular but with the introduction of so many new breeds they're not as popular now.Rare breeds can be acquired from professional breeders if your hatchery doesn't carry them. The fact that a chicken breed isnt popular has little to do with how good they lay. There are many reasons why some breeds are more popular than others and can have little to do with how good a breed it is.I ordered 10 pullets from Wisconsin from a breeder because the hatchery wanted me to buy 25 chickens and didnt offer pullets only.(I can't keep a rooster)

I love Delawares, Buff Orptingtons, Speckled Sussex, Silver Laced Wyandotte, and Partridge Rocks (I think they are much prettier than Barred). I generally go for dual purpose breeds that I can breed and sell chicks as well as eggs. When it comes time to eat my layers I sell their feathers to fly fishermen I know who tie their own flies. Reds were too mean for my kids, I really only buy roosters of those off people to send to freezer camp. The only breed I buy as a pet are Ameraucanas because they are so fluffy and the kids love the colored eggs.

Sometimes it completely depends on where you get your chickens as to what characteristics they have. You could get Rhode Island reds from three different hatcheries or three different feed stores and they could all be totally different from each other. So if you have a bad experience with one breed I wouldn't necessarily say give up on that breed. Get it from a totally different source and see what happens. You might be surprised.

Also if you get them from a reputable breeder with high standards.. I've bought birds that had traits of different breeds in them so they where not true to the breed I thought I bought..and behavior traits are also a heretitary.

our favorite chickens are production red and black austalorpe they are docile lay approx 300 eggs per year and are even pet friendly , we have owned isa brown, light brahmas, mystic marans, prairy bluebells, olive eggsers, barred rocks, buff orpingtons and golden lace Wyandots. we did not like barred rock because the were flighty and taught the other chickens to escape. We also were not fond of the light bramas, they pecked and chased the other breads and the roosters mated with all the breads over and over another problem with white breads is the high visibility to preditors especially at night.. sometimes the birds just did not want to go in the coop even for their own protection.

I have several prphingtons , all are nice, broody sometimes but always docile. The chocolates and lavender hens are beautiful.
I can pick most of them up with one hand. I think they like me.
Anyway the mixed flock includes Brahmins Cochins Barred Rocks And some Amercaunas. The later are not very docile unless I have worms and bugs. All the producing hens are consistent layers and I get all sorts and shades of large eggs.
My Cochin Rooster is quite friendly and very alert to danger and forage.
I haven’t lost a bird to a beast since signing him up, roosters earn their keep!
My very favorites are all of them.

Good picks, I use Plymouth Rock and ISA Browns as my main chickens. I would also suggest Czeck Sapphire chickens for layers that can survive the cliques that the rock chickens usually make. They make good mixed flocks and are strong enough to not get picked on. I have Lakenvelder hens, but, I wouldn't recommend them for a beginner or for cold weather.

Hi great video. I've had many Buff Orps, they're nice, but all the Roosters were mean. I love Barred Rocks, they are 1 of my favs. My other fav is AMERACAUNAS, I love the colored eggs ,and they are very friendly . I really didn't have any other favorites until last year when I ordered chicks from breeds that I'd never had before. True Green Whitings are a reddish bird that lays lots of green eggs. They are friendly and not too flighty. Also True BLUE Whitings, which lay beautiful blue eggs. They are also friendly and a bit calmer. Some of my birds even know where names-- 😂 I can call certain ones by name and she will come running. I am very pleased with the breeds I got this year, oh, I almost forgot the Silver Spangled Hamburgs!!! I had lost 3 pullet chicks within 2 days of them arriving, so I don't have a lot to go by. But the 1 hen + Rooster are very nice. I have learned that I don't generally like "red" birds, because they are nervous or flighty or short tempered. Whatever, I don't like their personalities. So I'll stick with the Barred Rocks, AMERACAUNAS, Whitings, + Silver Spangled Hamburgs. 😂

Barred Rock hens are broody. This is a trait that I look for in a chicken breed. You need roosters at least and broody hens for a self reliant homestead.

I have never had a broody Barred Rock. Additionally, numerous chicken temperament charts from big hatcheries show that they are infrequently broody.

I had a varied flock of 52 chickens. 5 were roosters. And the only trouble makers were 2 cuckoo maran roosters, a RI Red hen and a Barred Rock hen. The maran roosters were really super aggressive. So I ate them. Of the two problem hens, the barred rock would run the length of my 16 foot coop to attack my golden comet. My comet literally wouldn't go in the nest box until I was in the coop. And I stood guard to keep the barred rock away. My comet would come sit on my lap when I was outside. None of my chickens were handled much when little. I had a job that took most of my time. But my flock knew me and everyone got along except the RI Red and the Barred Rock. I gave those two to a farmer friend. Then there was peace in my coop again.
