  • Update: This was the world record from July 31, 2022 to April 10, 2023. Congrats to SpaceColonizer on the new WR!
    What a start to Jawgust! Finally got WR, at least for now. I've finished Jaws fights about 2-3 seconds faster in practice, but this is the perfect scenario. A very small nibble so the chase can live on.
    Frame counted to 3:06.493
    Played 7/31/2022 on toploading NES with original cart.

    Nice run! I had no idea it was even possible to beat this game in such a short amount of time; I was under the impression that this game took hours to beat.🦈

      It's all because of SpaceColonizer, he came up with the route and everything like that. I just had to memorize the script and do the Jaws fight, which is a lot easier than routing 😆

    Great run! Got this game for Xmas as a kid, I remember that year my dad hid our presents around the house like an Easter egg hunt.
    Jaws was inside our tiny little toaster oven. So I hit the tab and the door popped up and the tray popped out a wrapped Jaws game.
    Played it a lot, until about a year and a half later, I finally sat down and told
    myself I'm going to beat this game. Took me a bunch of tries over a couple days to finally get the stake done, and I only did it at the correct
    range cause I was mad the boat kept stabbing "through" him, so I said out loud ' What, does he have to be like 80 feet away and magically
    get stabbed" and yeah that's what happened. When I heard the noise I alerted my brother who was reading a book on his bed in the same room,
    and we watched the ending together. That ending music is still my favorite piece of NES music ever composed, right alongside the invincibility
    potion for wizards and warriors. I lost my dad last year, but I still have my original copy and manual of Jaws.

    • @ZeroThe14th
      @ZeroThe14th  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry to hear that. It's amazing how little things like that become something you remember years later. He probably had no idea it would be something positive that stuck with you for so long when he was hiding everything.
      The charge is still really difficult to do when you're not on the script for the speedrun. If you're on script you'll know what Jaws will do based on where you ended the encounter and where the last Jellyfish was, but if you're not it's basically random.

I just keep doing fun Dad things like that though, in the hopes that some day 30 years from now she'll look back and remember that I tried and that I love her more than life itself.

    GG it always took me 25 minutes or more.
    The end screen where the plane flies away into the sunset is what I find hilarious. After the shark's dead, we do what we apparently didn't think of the entire time bc the shark was so dangerous. We get into an airplane and fly over the ocean where the shark couldn't have got us.
    If we already had the plane, why the heck didn't we just fly away to begin with? IDK it just always felt like an unintentional FU from the developers.

    • @ZeroThe14th

      Thanks! The charge at the end was always so hard for me, I could never figure out how to line that up.
      I never really thought about the plane before, but that's a great point! They also had the plane for those bonus stages too, so it's not like it wasn't there the whole time. If the shark absolutely had to go, they could have still just used the plane!

    • @mercury71822
      @mercury71822 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ZeroThe14th I can understand the good sportsmanship part of it, but what if it gets to the point where the current holder can improve and no one else can? I feel like the back and forth thing kind of stops the full possible momentum from being reached, like keeping a runner from reaching their peak, like if a track runner stops after passing a guy before reaching their top speed. The immediate repetition right after a WR might take you to a limit you wouldn't normally reach otherwise.

    • @ZeroThe14th
      @ZeroThe14th  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mercury71822 I'm guessing we'll revisit that when it gets low enough and there's not much improvement to be made, but we know there's still at least 2-3 seconds out there minimum. I think my best Jaws fight time in practice would have ended up around a 3:03-3:03.5, and Slack and SpaceColonizer are both capable of that. It sounds like one or both of them are going to be coming back to Any% soon for Jawgust, which is really exciting! There are some new categories for the game that I might try out as well (Power 1, Power 9, and Deathless) that should keep the Jaws rhythm in good shape. I'm still doing my daily Jaws practice offline just like I was prior to getting the record, since it's hard to break that habit, so I don't think it'll be super hard to jump right back into the water (pun intended).

      It's something that you really only see in the speedrun. Jaws has 24 s after each hit so he won't take any extra damage (and he moves slower), so we're basically just trying to minimize the distance the shot has to go while also getting as close as possible to that 24 frame timing. Mashing is a lot safer, but it ends up being slower. I still mash when I'm doing a casual playthrough, even though it can get painful near the end! 😆

    Why did no small sharks show up? Why didn't the rays go higher in the ocean.

    • @ZeroThe14th
      @ZeroThe14th  ปีที่แล้ว

      The small shark would have showed up during the Jaws fight, but it was over fast enough so it didn't appear. I want to say they're the 24th enemy spawn during an encounter, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
      The rays will spawn at roughly the same depth that your diver is at, and they'll go back and forth, working their way up to the top of the water where they despawn. That's why we drop down partway through the Jaws fight, so those rays give us more time in the battle before the encounter ends (I think that's also after 24 spawns, but I'd need to verify that with SpaceColonizer to be 100% sure).
