- Not your average concert...
I have got no details about the concert and accompanists. Any information regarding the same is welcome.
Grateful to Sh. Jayant Kulkarni for sharing this most precious gem.
Pt. Bhimsen Joshi renders "Saheb Jamaal" in his usual style giving it a profound and introspective mood. The brief rendition ends with Kirana Bandish - "Kangan Mundariya Mori". Then Panditji takes a "Kafi" break. The concert ends with unusual Natyageet - Prem "Seva Sharan" which is in Raag Bhimpalasi.
Some of my insights on "Piya Toh Manat Nahi" -
If I had to pick a single thumri by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, it would undoubtedly be this one. His rendition is imbued with profound emotion and deep understanding, showcasing his mastery over the art form. What stands out most is the quiet elegance in his voice-it sets the mood perfectly without overpowering one’s thoughts. Listening to him sing feels like sitting by a window, lost in contemplation, as his music gently calms the soul.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi captures the essence of Kafi (or better sat Mishra Kafi) beautifully, echoing the same tender despondence found in Kala Ramnath’s thumri in Kafi. It evokes vivid imagery of someone trying to console a distressed lover, with the raag's notes poignantly expressing heartbreak. While Kafi is often associated with vibrant Holi songs or celebrations of love (refer to Kumar's compositions), Joshi’s interpretation reveals its quieter, melancholic side, portraying the depth of lost love with unmatched artistry.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi demonstrates how the same set of swaras can convey such a wide spectrum of emotions, leaving a lasting impression on the fellow listeners...
