Dizzy was a childhood favourite Andrew. Thanks for the reminder! Hope you're well.

Rick Dangerous - The C64 version is pretty good, although the levels are shorter than they are on the Amiga. I also miss the natives yelling "WAAAAHH!!!" when they die. :)
Boulder Dash - Not only are there official sequels to this game, but there are dozens if not hundreds of hacked copies with new levels.
Ballblazer - Press the F3 key to cycle through the options you can change, and then press F5 to change them. There are nine levels of computer opponents you can play against. You score one point for making a goal up close, two points for scoring one from further away, and three points, if you're so far away that you can't actually see the goal posts when the ball goes in. This last one is possible because the playfield is supposed to be slightly convex, with the middle being the highest point. The width between the goal posts will decrease with each goal you make.
The Staff of Karnath - I loved this game, but never figured out how to complete it. You pick up those triangles on the floor, take them down to the caverns and use one of the spells to paste them on the obelisk. Unfortunately, while it has space for 16 pieces, I could only ever find 12, and some of those I couldn't figure out how to get.
Omega Race - As I recall, you could change the color of the graphics.

That's really interesting. You only get to know that stuff when you really invest some time. I'm relatively new to c64 games so still learning- which is a fun curve to be on. Thanks for your comment. Hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers.

I discovered the C64 late in life, but now I am hooked. Cassette decks and disk drives are very inexpensive, at least on this side of the pond (US,) and worth the investment. Otherwise I would recommend a Pi1541 along with a Epyx Fastloader at a minimum.

I just remember my old vic-20's cassette deck was a pain back in the day. Once bitten and all that! 🤪

@@pixel_fandango If you can afford it, the ultimate add-on for a real C64 is probably the 1541 Ultimate II. It can emulate a floppy drive to load games from disk images, use fastloaders, emulate an EasyFlash cartridge and much more.

I wonder .... Is the C64maxi or mini garbage comaring to the "real deal"?

    • @pixel_fandango
      @pixel_fandango  หลายเดือนก่อน

Not at all. The retro games C64 is a great piece of kit, especially the maxi because it has a working keyboard. For a start you get a much crisper display quality, it can run as a C64 or a Vic20, you can download game images to a memory stick, you can still write basic programs if you want to. What you lose is the genuine feeling when you use the real thing. The quirks and imperfections make the original more interesting. I guess it's a bit like playing analogue music on vinyl versus digital downloads.

Your 64 has VIC-20 function keys.

Yeah. Most seem to have grey f-keys but some have the brown. Not sure if that was a UK thing or a manufacturing thing or, more likely, they just got replaced at some stage. I can't say it bothers me too much, but good spot.

Depends what parts commodore had at the time. Some boxes show orange function keys in the photos.

@@pixel_fandango My original keyboard had tan function keys. Then I accidentally broke one of the keys and had to replace the keyboard. The new one had gray function keys. I also thought the font on the keys looked worse as it was larger and thicker. Plus, I don't know if this would have happened to the original keyboard as well, but over time, several of the symbols on the fronts of the keys wore off.

on the Karate game I always thought their hands were their bellies and they were all overweight.

They're well into their 50s now. Maybe they've put on a bit of lard in that time.
Wouldn't it be odd if the characters in games did age?
