I saw the documentary "amarican bellydancer" a few days ago, and one thing that jillina talkt about was that there were no good venues for bellydance, and that dancing at weddings and partys just didn't give bellydance the amount of respect that it deserved... and I think its just so beautiful that she's finally(well ok she has been for a while now, but anyway) up there on a big theatre stage, its wonderful! what a dream come true! I love you jillina!
it's nice! i don't quite understand though, why some dancers think that the dance or themselves don't have the respect they they deserved. i have never had any bad experiences. i have always been treated good and the people liked the show. what else can you want... i think all the "fighting" for a "good reputation" isn't based on a real problem.
open to your intepretation: just yesterday, 2/28/11 - I picked up several CD's to copy to my computer. From the main branch of Buffalo + Erie County Public Library in downtown Buffalo NY. - 1975's George Abdo's Joy of Belly Dancing (google the image) - instead of the original pic of dancer Juliana - a plain pink card (trimmed with scissors) with type written info glued to it. The whole was scotch taped onto the front of the cd jewel case. go figure.
@Lehmann108 well, maybe not where YOU live, but I HAVE gotten those leering looks. from middle aged women. our dance troupe was booked to do a show and were told "no skin" so we all dressed in ethnic costumes. they didn't want the classic 2 piece costume. so now, I am NOT crazy, What I said IS true, and it is NOT projection. just because YOU haven't experienced it doesn't mean it does not happen.
FOr those of you who dont really know --- belly dancing has for a long time been considered a step above stripping in this country (USA). I began dancing over 17 years ago and heard this from some of the star dancers of that time - before Jillina was even known!!!! One of the top travelled belly dancers of that time told a class I was in of her different experiences around the world and in the US she was treated the worst - Germany she was treated the best. It is true.
latanaya in USA, belly dance is considered just one step up from stripping. At weddings and partys it's just for the thrill. There used to be a lot of ethnic festivals where you could dance. But then budget cuts stopped that. Not to mention "Arabs" are now the enemy of US (used to be Russians). So anything of Arab culture is looked down at . And this is so sad. because we dancers know this as art, and not all Arabs are bad.

@LadyMoondancer I have never known anyone who would consider Bellydance a step above striping. It anything it is considered an art.
i love it and your costume is amazing mashalla
wooow , Jillina is just amazaing!! when was this taken ?
wael kfoury is singing this song the name is omry kellou...here in the video is singing another singer...but the song is amazing anyway
This is some of the lousiest camera work I have ever seen. They keep cutting to different angles too fast. Does the dancer injustice
latanaya
