Devil May Cry 5 made me squee like a little girl.
Alot of good story and character moments AND excellent gameplay. That's why I prefer DMC5 to sekiro. I didn't care much for the characters or story in sekiro.
Literally its only problem is the designs of the female characters, which are ugly compared to previous designs. To be fair the whole "realism" design stuff dons't fit DMC as much as the stylized designs from before in my opinion, but the female characters suffer the most from it. That aside the game is just perfect.

The only thing I didn't like in that game was Vergil's inclusion; it felt extremely forced to me, and the stupid Dante vs Vergil feud made his last moments in DMC 3 feel pretty meaningless in retrospect. Also, the level design was boring as hell. Aside from that, I thought DMC 5 was great ^^
Devil May Cry 5 was a blast from beginning to end but I'll admit the samey environment, repeating enemies and the dmc girls being damsels the whole game did kinda hamper my overall experience. Despite all this the game had me grinning from ear to ear the whole time and I was super sad when it was finally over.

I never heard of dmc going into dmc5. I then proceeded to beat all difficulties and play all the other ones. Not only is it my game of the year, it’s my favorite game I’ve ever played. And I’m not good at picking favorites.

From other TH-camrs they have stated that you don’t play DMC for the story. So of course the characters and the story wouldn’t be so stellar.

what you said about RE2, by going in dark and just playing it, was magical. I had the same experience. I went back and played re2 on n64 for the first time in 15yrs and after playting that I went from "oh, cool, re2 remake" to "IM RDY , LETS GO,. LETS GO. DAY1 BUY". I still love how well they made it familiar and new. I knew where I was, I knew what halls and rooms I was running down/into, but it was still fresh and gave me what I needed.

Disagree, it’s a game that shouldn’t have relied on the gameplay style it used. Same problem with Fallen Order. The mechanics unique to it were what made it special. The souls style gameplay ruined what could’ve been unique and super fun gameplay. It hindered offensive fun with necessary defensive maneuvers. DMCV improves vastly on what was considered a perfect combat system (by MANY) in 4

DMC 5 made me have fun with a video game and smile like a little kid (not that other games doesn't give me fun, but this one was something more pure), and as a videogame that has the fundamental objective to make you have fun, DMC5 just blows thing to a amazing proportions.
If FF14's Shadowbringers expansion was a standalone game it would be my game of the year.

@@TheWeapon33 For a game to come out in 2019 and have everything you'd hope it would have is practically an achievement in its own right. The expansion also has unexpected things in the Ishgardian Restoration and the Nier raid. I don't see why game of the year needs to be a single player game.

Ishgard Restoration was barely different from enclave restoration and was done in 3 days on most servers. Nier raid is not unexpected, it has the same structure as crystal tower from 7 years ago, unoriginal songs and bosses and nothing new.

I bet many will question my game of the year being Travis Strikes Again, but that game brought back of what I adore of Suda 51 and his company. Their punk attitude of not being afraid to go against people's thoughts. TSA also just keeps me coming back to just keep looking back into for analytical reasons.

that perfect action game feeling youre mentioning... i agree, i havent gotten the same impression from a game since ninja gaiden on og xbox. gow got really close last year, but it doesnt quite have the same arcade-like gameplay loop flow that i enjoy from ng and dmcv.

My game of the year for the second year in a row is Monster hunter without a doubt. I have spent more time playing that game than anything else in the last 2 years and I will continue to play it into the next year.

Resident Evil 2 remake basically made me into a Resident Evil fan. Was bored out of my mind thinking I was getting sick of gaming til I saw that game on sale for 40 bucks early this year. Loved it so much I've been playing through other games in the series since.

When I beat RE2 it instantly became GOTY, but then I played DMC5 and just didn’t stop playing it the whole year. Game of the generation. I needed more yesterday. Didn’t even have the PC version with all the sick af mods.
I can never give one singular game GOTY, I say Games of the Year instead.
There's too many good games that do great things in different genres and in their own way just to say 'uhh this one is the best i guess'.
I think it’s all about what you’re looking for in a game. I look for a certain feeling game that has tight controls but freeform combat that is aggressive and gritty. DMC5 satisfied that add the fact that Dante’s music is literally shouting “you suck” at Dante’s enemies and it shot up to my favorite game to play, beating out Godhand.
I hope with the closure of MH Frontier, MH can be so much more. I know what most people's opinion on Frontier but with those man power they can do so much more now.

GotY 2019: Return of Capcom
I’d say my GOTY has to be MHW even though Capcom made me a more bigger fan of them this year, enjoying also RE and DMC. Monster Hunter always has been the same but with always new content with monsters, armor and weapons and locations but the moment they showed the MHW reveal trailer, I lost my mind. I thought I’d never see MH on a PlayStation again let alone be completely different from many years of the old games. Everything about it brought tears of joy to me and it continues to never bore me. Even seeing the dev dairies and how much they care for the games will always make me a fan for the series. These games continue to be fully priced products with hundreds of hours of content with always new and free updates.
DEATH STRANDING HANDS DOWN! If you people actually played and completed it you would agree as well.

it's on sale for around $20 right now, and the Iceborne expansion releases for the PC version on January 9th so that's not gonna go on sale for a while. It is just $40 tho, so you could pick up both the base game + expansion for about the normal price of a game, but with like 3 times the content, even the base game of Monster Hunter was something you could easily sink over 200 hours into

It was down to Sekiro and RE2 for me and Sekiro edges it out. I get what you said Max, but instead of burning out like you did, I only fell deeper. The combat in Sekiro is revolutionary imo when it comes to melee-based combat. From really made a Shinobi sword fight feel like you were actually well, sword-fighting. It's fun, fast, skill based, and fresh... Realizing that Sekiro rewards you for standing your ground and looking for an opening. The Final boss was all I needed for Sekiro's combat to completely bowl me over as it felt like a final exam where you'd use everything you learned to win...and that's just the combat! The level design, freedom on how to approach different encounters, and world building all captivated me. Of course Bloodborne is better, but not many things come close imo so that by no means takes away from Sekiro. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is without a doubt my GOTY
Other Notes: RE2 is a hellah close second. As someone who never played the original RE2 this game was simply astounding on every level. Bring on RE3!
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order may have had its technical shortcomings, but I absolutely adored that game. Sure it was a mish-mash of many great games with a Star Wars skin, but that totally worked for me. Easily my favorite Star Wars game to date with one of my favorite Star Wars stories ever told.
Death Stranding. Yea I know, but this game, to my incredible surprise, won me over with its incredibly unique gameplay hooks. Not only did I not expect to like it as much as I did, but I NEVER expected it to be one of my games of the year. Well done Kojima, well done.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is my last GOTY... I really love Kingdom Hearts that is all.

What I'm loving from Capcom right now is how they work their magic on Re-Engine.
I really like these videos.I like hearing a gamer explanation why a game is good or bad instead of the bs the supposed professionals from all the garbage sites spew out. I haven't played any of the games Max mentions, I've only seen a few things about DMC, yet still I understood why people really liked them.
The gaming industry needs more gamers making their opinions heard instead of all the sensationalist assholes that create hit pieces to get some cheap clicks.

Dmc5 is the second greatest game I've ever played (wonderful 101 being first but that's a whole other story). It was pure hype from start to finish. Dmc6 or whatever next character action game from capcom will have huge shows to fill. I stood up and clapped at the end credits like I watched some blockbuster movie. I can go on but I'll stop here

Resident Evil 2, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, Devil May Cry 5, and Monster Hunter World Iceborne are my top favorite games of 2019. Any of them should be able to get GOTY imo.
Loved the end gush about DMCV I was so upset it didn’t even get nominated for GOTY. That game is video game fun perfected, no dad feels redemption arc critical darling BS, just pure fun front to back with complete control put in the players hands. No other game this year put you in charge of how much fun you were having like DMCV did.
4 years later, Capcom is truly back cause Street Fighter 6 is gonna be the game to bring CapGod back. The deciding factor is if RE4 remake can be better than the original.

Honestly I don't think the RE1 Remake ABSOLUTELY replaces the original because the original has some great qualities to it that the RE1 Remake lacks such as the great charm, certain musical differences that are great in both versions respectively, the old one has a more 90's vibe which is iconic to it that the RE1 Remake kind of lacks. I honestly think both games are masterpieces in their own right and both deserve to be played equally. The RE1 Remake though obviously has better tech involved but it's definitely missing the charm.
DMC 5 really brought my gaming feeling back
Damn, Max has a very similar Top 4 to mine. For me, GOTY goes to DMC5 for the reasons Max stated. Very close second is RE2R, third is Sekiro and fourth is Judgement. Iceborne would be somewhere within Top 10 among some other amazing games I played this year. Happy New Year, doods!
Dmc5 is definitely my number one game of last year. My ONLY complaint is that certain stages it looks really kinda grey colorwise. Like compared to the other dmcs, a good chunk of these levels had that grey grungy look, which isnt necessarily a bad thing, I just think it was a bit over done. Other than that, not much to gripe over, and that was a minor gripe at that. Oh, and i wish there was an option to add in motion blur back on ps4. Loved the blur effect for moves like high roller, Calibur and Roulette spin in 4, and I was kinda sad to see them go for the most part but this is also minor

Reading the comments makes me feel so left out lol Super Smash Bros Ultimate is undoubtedly my 2019 GOTY (dispite it being released late 2018 but whatever). It was my very first Smash game I really got into and fuck to this day I cannot stop playing it, over 400+ hours and counting. It's got flaws of course, but the pros imo eclipse a lot of the complaints people have about it. I've 100% completed World Of Light twice now and loved going through it both times, seeing little bits of gaming history and Easter eggs at every corner. It's got a billion characters and stages, achievements to get (kinda), different game modes with more being added from time to time, and the DLC fighters are amazing with unique quirks that makes them stand out from the rest, and clearly a lot of work and care went into their representation and fan service for their respective fandom. And the easy to pick up/hard to master gameplay is perfect for a fighting game fan such as myself that struggles to do strings and input commands in other fighting games, instead relying on good movement and player reading, which I've been above average at. Learning how to instinctively perform things like techs, tilt combos and perfect shields has been an amazing journey and I just keep wanting to learn more to get better. I want to shake Sakurai's hand for this magnum opus of video game excellence.
The only problem with DMC 5 is that it's short and we gotta wait for another 11 yearz!

I do think having the Demon Bell for most of his playthrough affected Max's opinion on Sekiro. But all his opinions are also valid.
I had basically the exact same list as you until like 2 weeks ago. Played Outer Wilds and damn, it's incredible. Even as someone who mainly just plays action games and fighting games, Outer Wilds blew me away. DMC5 was the obvious choice since it's absolutely the perfect game for my tastes, so I couldn't believe I played something I like better the same year it released.

Capcom crushed it this year, no doubt. RE2 has to be my GOTY though. I've played that game so many times this past year. Actually played it last week even. The return of true DMC is up there too.

Mine’s RE2. I started playing it recently and have really enjoyed so far.
Yes I haven’t finished the game yet, but it’s the game I played in 2019 which I enjoyed the most so I’m counting it.
I actually skipped out on the majority of games this year, many just didn't interest me or some I didn't even know came out (I also had a ton of financial problems due to my cat getting injured several times, vet bills are so god damn expensive, so I had to opt out of some games I wanted), but I personally have to give Fire Emblem Three Houses my GOTY. The Fire Emblem community prior was RIDICULOUSLY small. And opinions on the series was extremely split, we had old school fans who only liked the GBA games and the opposite who preferred the 3DS games. They would constantly argue but when Three Houses came out, everything stopped. I still have yet to see many arguments break out since Three Houses came out because it's just that damn good. I can't find a major fault in the game besides having to replay the first 12 chapters every new game+ save file. The first 12 chapters are just an absolute bore after the first time through because it's a set thing and you know what's gonna happen in the end, just takes very slightly different routes to get there. But, the gameplay is better than ever, granted kinda easy due to the Divine Pulse mechanic, but still challenging enough, the story is actually pretty well made imo, and the cast... oh my god, if there is ONE thing I want in EVERY game I play, it is good characters. Three Houses is loaded to the brim with them. There are few characters that are just ok but only one or two that I can say with confidence are bad/I don't like. The community has exploded in size and it's just an amazing time to be a Fire Emblem fan.
Also, it's not even out yet because I play on PC, I haven't seen much of it because I want to avoid spoilers, but Monster Hunter World Iceborne is already GOTY for next year. Does that count for 2020 technically cause it's coming out late on PC? I adore Monster Hunter but I have done literally everything in World except fight Extreme Behemoth, just because you don't get any meaningful rewards from it. I also just don't trust random SOS players and tbh, my friends can barely beat Arch Tempered Monsters, I can't trust them on Extreme Behemoth (I'm not saying AT monster are easy, but Extreme Behemoth is a whole different level). I just can't wait for Iceborne, one of my favorite things to do is to go on expeditions and just kill every monster that spawns and guess what? There's an entire region for that now, the Guiding Lands. I'm going to spend an absurd amount of time there not even grinding, just for killing anything that I see. Plus the free DLCs? Rajang and Safi'jiiva? Look AMAZING, I have played the old games and I LOVE Rajang and a lot of the old monster they brought back, I'm just so excited for this expansion.
DmC is easily my game of the year. Personally I don’t count Iceborne as it is officially labeled as an “expansion,” but it is very close second if I did count it.
My GOTY is probably Resident Evil 2 Remake. I’m a big RE fan and this game is everything I’ve wanted in a remake.
My two runner ups though are Death Stranding and Astral Chain.
