My 80 has rear disk brakes and doing handbrakes is always a real pain. I'm about to install the superior handbrake kit to see what happens. I rebuilt the handbrake setup with all new parts including new cable about 2 yrs ago and it never holds with the vehicle pointing downhill. Keen to see how it goes. Pro tip - never trust the handbrakes and park in gear (with manual gearbox). Pro tip 2 - the dogbone upgrade does *not* work with earlier (pre 8/92) smaller rear disk brakes.

Correct. I tried to fit dog bones to my 1991 hdj80 and they pushed the shoes apart too far. It's possible to mig weld your originals and file them back to size. From memory (10 years ago) it's about 5mm the difference.

Same experience with the plate not lining up. Had to oversize the same hole. Same experience with effectiveness (none yet). Logically the superior kit will give more cable pull/leverage so I'm not blaming the kit either. My handbrake shoes are in good nick. I replaced all hardware (springs/pins). I'm on the original dog bones because mine is a 1991 hdj80 and the modded bones don't fit/work. I'm due to adjust everything anyway and I'll be fitting a new cable to give it the best chance of working.
Fwiw I also did braided lines, slotted and dimpled rotors. Later model/larger diameter rotors on front. Matching later Calipers (rebuilt). Deleted dust shields. Anti seized the rear caliper slide pins. Have tried a few different pads and I like the bendix ultimates better than the brembo pads in it now. The GPmax pads are pretty good too. She pulls up hard! Massive improvement over our other 80 series.

Modified dog bones and a new handbrake cable for around $90 delivered would have done the trick. I say this to encourage you to do more research on what you want to achieve at the cheapest way possible. keep up the good work.

theron hoad yeah I was thinking about doing them next. Overtime handbrake is about back to its normal self. This may be the next option.
      I am still sceptical.
Some people tell me it works like a dream with everything replaced.
Some say it works with just the handbrake unit replaced.
Some say it doesn’t work with anything replaced.
I wanna put it down to how its been installed to those who say that nothing works.
But then again I guess you would have a lot more weight on a Troopy, than say a Ute with a light tray

Dogbone (bargain) or axle (expensive) upgrades are only worthy options, the brake handle bracket mod isn't a good idea, it will lead to stretched brake cable. Thanks for the content

For those mongrel retaining clips I found the most important tool was my 176 pc swearing kit.

I'm interested in putting a upgraded 79 brake booster on my 80 series hzj80 ..can it be done.im also toying with the idea of a hydrolic booster that is connected to my power steering box.
