I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Not only is this the magnum opus of neutral milk hotel, it’s the magnum opus of music. Nothing will ever be more beautiful than these 9 minutes of audio.
although this version still rocks, id say i still prefer the everything is version. I personally love the unsettling slightly-out-of-tune guitars and muffled/whispered lyrics and how well it mixes with the lyrics, which are unsettling in their own way. it feels like its building towards something but never gives you the release you want. i guess people prefer this version because it sounds more like an aeroplane song(because of the brass and fuzz bass)
I've been wondering why the videos of this version of Ruby Bulbs ends so suddenly, thanks for the explanation. This is one of my favorite things they ever did.
It's really a shame they haven't done a studio recording of the far superior euphonium version of Snow Song Pt. 1 (The one in this video and others like it). It really is more coherent, beautiful, and poetic with the less-muffled lyrics and euphonium/baritone melody, opposed to the quite iffy-sounding and unsettling 'Everything Is' version with distorted audio and an overwhelming guitar melody.
I saw them in Omaha a few years back and hearing the baritone start playing that melody after about 5 minutes of noise was the most beautiful part of the show.
I need to taste your voice in my mouth I need to taste your voice in the air I need to feel your skin against all that I retch out And feel your voice all over everywhere I need to paste your skin 'round the mailbox And hold the postman in your smile I need to fill your lungs with smallpox And feel the glow of a sick and distorted child Beautiful babies All filled with angels Beautiful babies All filled with angels Beautiful babies All filled with angels Beautiful babies All filled with angels And we are wrecking your rover And we are swimming in your speakers With your sticky stuff all over Coming out from all your features For Free And I say I want inside you Because there is nothing on the surface But it hurts the holes that guide you And all your holes that hold no purpose For me - Snow song - Cindy smiles And overcoats She says, "Please stay a while" Like ice cream floats and dreams And I will fill you heart With boats and bells and beams and candy-appled everythings Bells and beams and candy-appled everythings' Cindy skips my trampoline With horns and bells and bouncing things And even the most silent must sing a song of love Even the silent they must sing a song Of love

Definitely the best version of this song. Not a fan of the Album version from Everything is. And the only other recorded version I can find is Jeff solo (from Aquarius Records) which isn't nearly as good as the full band. They gave an amazing performance of this song when I saw them in Charlottesville last week and this is the closest I can find to it...
smiskimins Oh my gosh...I was at that C'ville show as well, and was just thinking about how amazing it was. Thanks for sharing this. I wish I could see it again.
how is it possible for something this good to happen

Agree. Has something of the masterpiece about it in the truest sense of the word

5:02 Snow Song, Part 1
best performance of snow song imo
when they traveled through with elf power in 2013 laura was a second horn for this, and thats my definitive version
The sort of song that will never age. A genuine masterpiece.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ i love your song ❤
definitely my favorite version of snow song. I wish it was a track by itself!!

Snow song such an amazing live song
I absolutely love Jeff and his band. I would die a happy woman if I were to see them live. Please do a reunion tour and add Buffalo to the itinerary ❤
I like that picture!
Swimming in your speakers is such a good song shame they never recorded it
Wow. Didn't know that this existed. Thanks for the upload!
Has been my favorite nmh song since 2009.

Beautiful
I love this version of Snow Song, I'd put it on Par with the Everything is version, just in different ways
Hi guys
Hey man
I need to taste your voice in my mouth
I need to taste your voice in the air
I need to feel your skin against all that I retch out
And feel your voice all over everywhere
I need to paste your skin 'round the mailbox
And hold the postman in your smile
I need to fill your lungs with smallpox
And feel the glow of a sick and distorted child
Beautiful babies
All filled with angels
Beautiful babies
All filled with angels
Beautiful babies
All filled with angels
Beautiful babies
All filled with angels
And we are wrecking your rover
And we are swimming in your speakers
With your sticky stuff all over
Coming out from all your features
For Free
And I say I want inside you
Because there is nothing on the surface
But it hurts the holes that guide you
And all your holes that hold no purpose
For me

Snow song
-
Cindy smiles
And overcoats
She says, "Please stay a while"
Like ice cream floats and dreams
And I will fill you heart
With boats and bells and beams and candy-appled everythings
Bells and beams and candy-appled everythings'
Cindy skips my trampoline
With horns and bells and bouncing things
And even the most silent must sing a song of love
Even the silent they must sing a song
Of love
Why didn't use this version of Ruby Bulbs on the 2011 reprint?
