As many times as I have watched the original series and original cast movies, I never picked up on how Spock and McCoy were physical representations of Kirk's mental and emotional states.
I met De at my first big convention in Atlanta, Jimmy too. Very fine gentlemen. I miss them and Leonard too. Met him at a Cerebral Palsy Telethon at WTBS. He signed some of his books-poetry& photography and his I Am Not Spock book as well. i mentioned that my pastor said the benediction at the end of our sevice-I was still Lutheran then-and he asked," where you think he got that from?" I hadn't read the book yet-just bought It the day before and answered naively, "From Spock." He told me the real answer without making me feel like an idiot. I still have that book and next to it,I Am Spock.Years later, at another convention, a boy who stuttered asked Shatner how he felt having all these tribbles fall on him. "About as much fun as listening to you ask that question." Fortunately, the boy didn't seem too offended and Bill did apologise.

What an interesting story. I may have heard it before but it didn't click about Spock being one side of Kirk and Bones the other.
