Love seeing someone find a car that bring them joy. Doesn't have to be the fastest or even the most visceral. Sometimes a car can occupy a happy middle ground of speed, feedback and refinement (and many other traits) that just fits the owner. Nice job with the mods and turning your NSX into the car you've always wanted it to be.
Think you nailed it, and this video resonates. I have a 370Z with tasteful but extensive mods, and honestly it takes a good solid car that is overlooked by many, and turns it into a keeper to cheerish. It's perfected to exactly how I want it set up. Every drive is an experience, even just driving to the grocery store. It isn't the fastest, best handling etc but the combination of qualities makes it exceptional, and the judgement and trade offs involved were part of the joy of getting it set up like it is. Seven years in (I bought it new) I love everything about it and it's going to be mine in 20 years time. Moreover, there's always another mod I can 'treat' myself to that keeps the love alive and growing :-)
That’s great information about the clutch pedal switch. I’m sure a lot of different cars could benefit from that knowledge. I’ll definitely remember that one next time I think I have a failed starter.
It’s a common Honda problem. There are 3 of those rubbery cushion pads on the pedals. 2 on clutch, one for cruise cancel and one for starter interlock, and one on the brake pedal for brake lights. Often you’ll find crumbled pieces of them on the floor mat. If brake lights stay on all the time, it’s the brake pedal pad. If car won’t crank it’s probably the clutch start pedal pad. Common problem on Civics, Integras and S2000’s. So much so that LHT Performance offers a package of all 3 brand new pads in their online store for around $15-$20.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the car again. The first 3min of this video show exactly why it’s important to have a proper diagnosis performed rather than googling potential solutions on forums. Luckily you didn’t drop $850 on a starter you didn’t even actually need. Can’t wait to see what’s next for the NSX, looks pretty perfect from here.
I laughed when you said what the starting problem actually was. The same thing has happened to me before. Usually you see the broken plastic sitting on the carpet under the steering wheel so for anyone with an older Acura just be mindful of that.
The joy of restoring nsx is you can enjoy how the car drives like new from showroom.I love how my nsx runs right. It purrs and run smoothly. No more check engine light.
Check out Cobra Nogaros. I put a set in my Ap1 and they did everything you're looking for. Lowered the seating position, shaved weight, hold better, but are still very comfortable for a bucket and the low side bolsters means easy ingress/egress. We'll be releasing a video on them soon.
Same exact thing happened in my S2000, just bought the car and didn't start one day. Noticed the bits of plastic in the footwell and started right up after replacing that tiny piece.
Without tapping on the starter you could try with someone pushing the ride and one cranking. It should start if the starter motor is playing up. For the clutch rubber pad you can diy aluminium pad and never need to replace for lifetime. I did it for the brake one. Works a charm
The original NSX is *still* the ultimate Honda, from the days when Honda hit it out of the park with every model, building a name for itself that the company still capitalizes on.
Glad you're still loving the NSX. It is such a wonderful thing I'm sure. Any more content like this will be welcomed also! NSX, Emira and 911 on deserted winding mountain roads?! This is like nirvana! I wish my car's V6 sounded like this....
I keep mine around 3500 to 4300 rpm just love that wailing sound from the Taitec GTLW. For the seats I’m putting in mine the Recaro Podiums will let you know how they feel . Tomorrow is finally the day 😅
The opitome of Honda engineering. This is back when you could get in any Honda or Acura vehicle and feel that mechanical Honda DNA in each model to varying degrees.
I bypassed the clutch switch in my S2000 because of the same issue. as long as you dont forget to start it in gear your good. I also bypassed the clutch switch in my RSX I have and its been a couple years now without an issue
I currently run the recaro pole position ABE which they aren’t the FIA version that are super tight, they fit in my s2000 so they should fit in the NSX. I’ve used the seat on 8 hour round trips and I have 0 complaints.
Might be worth looking in Bride Euroster or Stradia seats. Stradia has higher bolsters on the bottom, but the sloped shape still allows fairly easy entry/exit. I have Euroster for the increased folding range (I need to access storage behind the seats) and the shoulder bolstering is plenty for the driving that I like to do.
use a 10mm bolt for your clutch and brake switch. When your brakes are constantly illuminated, the piece under the brake pedal broke, just like your clutch. A 10mm bolt will never break. Did this mod on my rsx, civic (EJ8) and I can't remember if the clutch stopper on the s2000 broke as well. Also look for nsx-r oem aluminum pedals, science of speed pedals, ultimate pedals, or srp racing pedals to clean up the look of your stock pedals. For your seats, I don't know if the leather is like the s2000 or if it's got that cheap coating on it like the rsx that makes the leather feel like hard plastic, I reupholstered my rsx seats from leatherseats with a full 100% front seat leather kit and I went from hating the stock leather rsx seats to probably like them more than the s2000 seats, which I never complained of. The rsx seats used to hurt my back on longer drives, just because of how hard the back was, now they're super comfy.
Glad you kept it mate, i could never part with my silver na1. Mines jdm being in new Zealand so i dont have a clutch safety switch or side markers, standard jdm 5speed really want the itr diff though. I replaced my old 80s abs with ap1 aps system, highly recommend it. I noticed you're also doing the key prime. Wait, then start. Having same issue, and i believe it's in the starter relay for the fuel pump prime bad or weak connection on a solder. Will dm you if it solves the issue. Chur from nz 🍻 oh and if u ever make it to nz, you're welcome to review my rhd nsx on nz mountain roads its sick af
Hey fellow Kiwi, our B roads are the best! What a car you have! I've got a 370Z with tasteful mods, always warms my heart to know there's a few of us left with a pulse 😊
@John-i1g oh for sure, lol i put a k series in an old 96 crv because i need all my cars to be fun in some way. 370 must be a good touring car for nz, some of the roads further south in south island are rough for the nsx. Im in nelson
@@jdmnuggets I live in the north island and with all the hill country there's great choices for 2nd-3rd-4th gear driving in the twisties, which is my favourite type. The Z is also a great size. I'm a car lover first and foremost, but chose the Z over a Mustang (which I loved test driving) because it was a better size and more nimble for the roads mentioned. I've spent $25k on it (changed gearing, flywheel, LSD, you name it) but kept the factory feel - it's refined so yes good for touring or caning it, often some combination of the two when I'm travelling. Have not taken it down the South Island but plan to. Would love to take it over the Takaka Hill road, but last time I was there in a rental car it looked like they had 5 years of road works ahead, any update on that?
In the S2K, there's 3 white (or yellow if old) plastic pedal buttons + the black clutch stopper. 2 buttons on the clutch pedal and 1 on the brake pedal. I just replaced all 3 recently because I found broken plastic on my floor mat. Luckily, it was the cruise control one and not the main clutch interlock so I could still start the car and drive home.
LOL. Same thing happened to my RSX years ago - clutch pad/switch fail. Crazy they don't make this out of something more durable than plastic. So does that mean I can say my car is built like a NSX?
They are a little over rated. They aren't fast at all.the engine sits the wrong way .technically. thats why they turn it in the race cars. But you do you brother.
I built many NSXs just like yours on grand tuismo 😂... your NSX is near perfection with those wheels. I know i have been promising my prelude for a long time. I too have gone down the rabbit hole of modding. I just picked up a BBK. Acura RL 4 piston calipers and pads. Nismo brembo 350 rotors. I uploaded a video on my channel. Im getting the car retuned. Once i get the brakes on, I'll email you. Should be 400 whp at 2700 lbs with 235/40/17 tires up front.
You should look at the Mita Motorsport NSX-R seats. I have them in my S2000 and I prefer them to the Recaro pole positions I used to have. They are way more comfortable but give me just as much support as the Recaro's.
Great video again! I know they are not in the same league, but how is this NSX compared to FL5R or your Ingetra type S in terms of driving feel, steering, gear shifts, handling etc?
You should've asked me lol. I am a Honda service manager and those brake/clutch stoppers crumble all the time. Just look on the drivers floor mat and you'll see the blue bits.
Glancing through comments I don't see a mention of your observation on final drive gearing. It does still seem a little long-legged in second gear, but way better than originally.
I'm sure I remember reading some time ago that the early NSX's only had single channel ABS whereas NA2s had 4 channel ABS like more modern cars? Could be wrong but I'd wager that's a good upgrade if possible. I think I remember OS Gikken made a 4.44 or even 4.62 final drive if you ever fancied going back into the gearbox to unlock even more performance.
Judging by the way the steering wheel jerks in your hand every now and then mid corner, I suggest adding a bit of camber to the front tires. You have inconsistent traction.
I think J series gearboxes bolt up to the C series without too much fuss. So you can take a gearbox from a V6 accord 6mt and fiddle with gear ratios and final drive, and of course, a limited slip.
MAKE SURE TO REPLACE ALL OF THEM NOW. Those $5 plastic grommets will throw you off on these Hondas. Lost one on my S2000 and the cruise control stopped working. There are several of them up under the pedals and they start to crumble over time so I just replaced all of them. They seem to have upgraded the part, should be good for another 20+ years.
Hilarious how the Bosch starter actually says "Do not strike with hammer", almost like the Bosch engineers stalk the forums and know this is common way to fix these !
You'll be fine with a Recaro Speed/SR series for reclinable options, or just go with the Pole Position ABE's very slightly wider than og Pole positions.
Hi Zygrene, have you tried a Tillet seat? I went with a Tillet B6 over a Recaro PP in my S2000. Found the Tillet more comfy than the PP’s, and fits fantastic in a tight cabin. Only problem with the B6 is it’s too reclined. A different model, the B9 fixes that with a more upright seating position and easier access for 3 point belt!
Having owned and put 50k+ miles on an Integra GSR, 50k miles on an NA1 NSX, an EG Hatchback, 113k miles on an 05 STI, a 94 Miata, 20k miles on an 18 Golf R, and 5k miles on a 23 BRZ... With autocross in the Integra and NSX, and track days in the NSX, Miata, STI, and BRZ.... I think your bias, or should I say personal taste, might be showing a bit 😅. It's great that you love your car, that's the best thing I could wish upon a car enthusiast. But the NSX isn't all that for everyone. The connected driving feel you talk about the most has more to do with bushings, dampers, springs, swaybars, geometry correction, wheels, tires, and alignment than the actual base car, in my experience. Granted the NSX needs less work in that area than most cars. But transformative changes in character can be achieved now more than ever with modern design and manufacturing techniques enabling more small companies to target niche platforms. The NSX is no doubt a great car, but I don't miss it. I never loved the mid engine balance, the steering ratio is too slow, and the manual steering is too heavy. I also had exactly the same seat issues you raised here, but I'm larger than you so they were even worse. Wheel and tire options were also even worse 20 years ago than they are now, too. While it sounds like the aftermarket options have come a long way (and so has my budget, lol), it does seem like a lot of the old hurdles are still there.
You should bypass the clutch switch. When I had my NA1 I didn't like the seats much either. Not enough lateral support, especially at the track. Get some headers, the NA1 iron exhaust manifolds are a joke
Is that road finally open again? I reckon was blocked off for a long time. Disappointed to hear that road is still bumpy as ever lol, though there is a very short smooth one right off the top that has very tight consecutive techinical corners. I'm sure you know of the one.
Fenton, have you tried adjusting the lumbar support in the OEM NSX seats? I’ve noticed that what feels good immediately after adjustment often isn’t a good setting for a long drive.
I’m in the same for my daily driven ISF. Looking for a bucket seat upgrade that isn’t aggressive. I’m eyeing out pole positions but ABE (lower bolsters)

Mita NSX-R seats plus NSX R seatrails
You should drive highway 17 from San Jose to Santa Cruz.
Everytime Fenton drops an Nsx video their values go up 5k😂
Is that road finally open again? I reckon was blocked off for a long time. Disappointed to hear that road is still bumpy as ever lol, though there is a very short smooth one right off the top that has very tight consecutive techinical corners. I'm sure you know of the one.
Back in the days did “hammer start” on at least two cars.
Classic Honda issue! Happened on all of my civics and integras
I almost bought one of these for 24k with 60kmiles in 2010
Fenton, have you tried adjusting the lumbar support in the OEM NSX seats? I’ve noticed that what feels good immediately after adjustment often isn’t a good setting for a long drive.
If I ever find one, at least I know I can just k swap it if the engine ever blows or buy a shell and swap it off the rip!!!
Need a nice head unit 👀
For seats, I always wondered if FL5 Type R seats would fit
Where is the back road located? Looks fun
Red BRIDE next and you won at life.
Still on the OEM diff? An OS Giken LSD would make sense as the next purchase. Then you'd have the ultimate handling NSX.
I had the OEM diff rebuilt and upgraded to NSX-R spec. I don't want the added NVH of an OS Giken. Not worth it for street and canyon driving.
I’m in the same for my daily driven ISF. Looking for a bucket seat upgrade that isn’t aggressive.
I’m eyeing out pole positions but ABE (lower bolsters)
I was between this and my 2024 cayman GTS 4.0 MT. Can you comment on how the driving dynamics compare to one another?
What mag safe phone mount is that on your front vents?
