Hi Maria, I used vegetable glycerin because it is water soluble. I'm not sure if the olive oil or almond oil would stay emulsified long enough for the gelatin to set. You could certainly try it! Let me know how it works out!
Hi there, the 'actual' shelf life of this is unknown. We are estimating it would be one year, but it may be less or even more. You can always challenge test it to know the sure shelf life.
I had actually wondered this, though with the other type of hydrogel mostly (this type is safe for putting on eyes & such and hydrates you, the other is sort of toxic because is could pull the water out of your body), this one would probably be more logical, anyways just try and see if it works, though I don't know how affordable it is if you're going to use it as a soil medium for several or many crops, nor how affective it is.

Can you also use Powdered Agar instead of Gelatin?
